Zoya (ゾーヤ, Zoya) is one of the main characters in the anime series Akiba Maid War. A former member of the Russian military, she works as a maid at the Oinky Doink Café in Akihabara. Despite her stoic and disciplined background, Zoya gradually adapts to the eccentric and chaotic world of maid cafés, forming bonds with her co-workers while contributing her unique skills to the team.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Zoya was born in the former Soviet Union, where she was raised under a strict household that forbade her from interacting with or enjoying anything considered “cute.” Instead, her upbringing was centered around military training, instilling in her a strong sense of discipline and combat readiness. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Zoya relocates to Japan and attempts to assimilate into Akihabara’s maid café culture by becoming a maid herself.
However, her initial trial at an Akiba maid café ends in failure due to her inability to smile, an essential part of the maid persona. Disheartened, she abandons the profession and becomes a subordinate of Dateno Taira. During a match at the Akiba Fight Club, Zoya battles Ranko Mannen, and the two ultimately acknowledge each other’s unique charm and “cuteness” in their own ways. This moment of mutual respect leads Zoya to join the Oinky Doink Café as an official maid.
Once part of the team, Zoya quickly grows attached to the café and becomes fiercely protective of her co-workers, channeling both her combat training and newfound appreciation for maid culture into her role.
Appearance
Zoya is a tall woman of Russian descent with a striking appearance. She has narrow blue eyes and long, light gray hair that adds to her cool and stoic aura. Her physical presence and posture reflect her military background, distinguishing her from the more traditionally styled maids in Akihabara.
Personality
At first glance, Zoya embodies a stereotypical “cold” and emotionless demeanor often associated with her military upbringing and Russian background. She rarely smiles and initially comes across as stoic and distant, a result of being raised by strict parents who discouraged emotional expression and forbade her from enjoying cute or playful things.
However, beneath her hardened exterior, Zoya has a deep fondness for cute objects and aesthetics. She is revealed to be an avid collector of dolls, showcasing a softer, more sentimental side to her personality. As she adjusts to life at the Oinky Doink Café, her affection for her co-workers and her love for all things cute begin to emerge more openly, gradually softening her character and deepening her bonds with the team.
Relationships
Ranko Mannen
Zoya and Ranko Mannen have a rough first encounter. Zoya, critical of Ranko’s violent tendencies, initially claims that Ranko is unfit to be a maid and mocks her for lacking the necessary “cuteness.” During their formal introduction as rivals in the Akiba Fight Club, Zoya reiterates her stance, stating that Ranko doesn’t embody the qualities of a maid. Ranko, in turn, asserts that wearing the uniform is what makes one a maid.
Their conflict reaches its peak in the final round of their match, where Ranko surprises Zoya by smiling at her. This act softens the tension, and both women acknowledge each other’s unique charm. Through this mutual recognition, Zoya comes to respect Ranko and begins to embrace her own love for cute things. Inspired by Ranko, she joins the Oinky Doink Café and looks to her as a mentor, relying on her guidance to learn the ways of a true maid.
In Episode 10, Zoya alongside Shiipon and Yumechi cheers for Ranko as she prepares for a date with Suehiro, unaware that he has been ordered to assassinate her.
