Zeno

Zeno (ゼノ, Zeno) is the original Ouryuu (Yellow Dragon) and one of the Four Dragon Warriors, possessing the blood of the Yellow Dragon deity. He is the fifth and final member to join Yona and Hak on their journey to restore the Kouka Kingdom. Unlike the other Dragon Warriors, Zeno’s true identity as the original Ouryuu who served King Hiryuu over 2,000 years ago is revealed later in the series. His immortality and centuries of experience make him a pivotal member of Yona’s group, bringing a unique perspective to their mission.

Appearance

Zeno laughing joyfully, his lighthearted and carefree nature shining through his radiant expression

Zeno is depicted as a young man with an ever-present smile, reflecting his cheerful and optimistic personality. He has blue eyes (initially brown in early appearances) and thick, messy yellow hair, adding to his sunny and approachable demeanor. His appearance exudes a sense of warmth and charm, earning him a reputation for being handsome.

Zeno is almost never seen without the Dragon Crest, a necklace gifted to him over 2,000 years ago by King Hiryuu. The necklace consists of alternating round burgundy and blue oblong beads, with a golden dragon-embossed disc at its center. While he originally wore it as a standard necklace, Zeno now wraps it around his head beneath his bandana, with the golden disc hanging on the left side of his face, just in front of his ear.

His outfit is both practical and distinctive, consisting of an orange overcoat with diamond patterns layered over a white robe with brown hemlines. He fastens a green scarf around his neck and wears brown short boots, completing his casual yet unique look.

When Zeno activates his powers, the regenerating parts of his body are temporarily covered in yellow dragon scales, which are as hard as steel. This transformation occasionally grants him abilities akin to the other Dragon Warriors: for instance, enhanced strength in his arms like Kija or heightened agility and jumping prowess in his legs like Jae-Ha.

Personality

Zeno is an energetic and cheerful young man who thrives on the company of others. He often speaks in the third person, a habit likely influenced by Kaya, and rarely calls others by their given names, instead using titles like “Seiryuu” or “Ryokuryuu” for the other dragons. While Zeno frequently comes across as childish and attention-seeking, this demeanor masks the wisdom and maturity he has accumulated over 2,000 years as the immortal Yellow Dragon. Despite his playful nature, Zeno has a deep sense of responsibility, always placing himself on the front lines to protect his companions, even though he generally avoids fighting.

Zeno possesses a keen insight into people’s emotions and circumstances, similar to Jae-Ha’s intuitive nature. He has an uncanny ability to sense hidden truths about individuals, such as when he comments on Hak’s “smell of death” or foresees Tae-Jun’s potential for growth and importance. While Zeno often withholds what he knows, it is not out of deceit but rather a thoughtful approach, waiting for the right time to share information based on the gravity of the situation and his unique perspective as one of the original Dragon Warriors.

Zeno’s charismatic and lovable personality makes him an indispensable member of the group. He often acts as a peacekeeper, attempting to break up arguments, especially between Kija and Hak, while bringing a sense of lightheartedness to tense situations. His love of food played a pivotal role in his introduction to the group when he joined after being offered a meal, a humorous moment Hak recalls as Zeno “breaking Kija’s record of speed joining.”

While Zeno’s cheerful exterior defines much of his personality, his moments of wisdom and quiet reflection reveal the depth of his character, shaped by centuries of loneliness, loss, and his unyielding devotion to King Hiryuu and Yona.

Role in the Story

Joining Yona’s Journey
Zeno is the final Dragon Warrior to join Yona and Hak on their journey. Initially appearing as a carefree wanderer, Zeno’s true identity and abilities are gradually revealed. His immortality and vast knowledge of history provide the group with valuable insight into the legacy of King Hiryuu and the Four Dragon Warriors.

Revealing His Past
As the original Ouryuu, Zeno served King Hiryuu alongside the first generation of Dragon Warriors over 2,000 years ago. His immortality, a gift from the Yellow Dragon deity, allowed him to live long past the death of his comrades and King Hiryuu. This left Zeno to wander the world alone, bearing the weight of his memories and the loss of those he loved.

Zeno’s experiences give him a unique perspective on life and humanity, and he often uses his wisdom to guide Yona and her companions. Despite his lighthearted attitude, he is willing to make sacrifices to protect his friends and fulfill King Hiryuu’s vision for the kingdom.

Strategic Wisdom
Zeno’s 2,000 years of experience give him a profound understanding of human nature, history, and the dynamics of conflict, making him a valuable strategist and advisor to the group.
