Zakuro Fujiwara

Zakuro Fujiwara (藤原ざくろ, Fujiwara Zakuro) is one of the main heroines of the manga and anime series Tokyo Mew Mew. She is the fifth and final member of the Mew Mews to be introduced, with her DNA merged with that of a gray wolf (Canis lupus), granting her enhanced senses, strength, and wolf-like abilities.

Appearance in Mew Mew Form

Zakuro is depicted as the tallest and most mature-looking member of the Mew Mews, admired for her striking features as a professional model. As described by her fan and teammate Minto Aizawa, Zakuro has “long, glossy raven hair,” “dark, intelligent yet sensitive sapphire-colored eyes,” and “long, strong, thin legs,” making her stand out among her peers.

In her everyday life, Zakuro’s hair appears dark purple, and her eyes are a shade of indigo blue. She is often shown wearing a silver cross necklace, a consistent part of her design, though in the anime she is also depicted with a necklace bearing her name. While usually seen in casual or professional attire, she occasionally appears in a school uniform, consisting of a light blue sweater vest over a white short-sleeved blouse and a black skirt.

As Mew Zakuro, her uniform is styled in a red-violet theme. She wears a short crop-top with light pink lace trim, paired with red-violet flared shorts and matching thigh-high boots. She also sports armbands, wristbands, a choker, and a garter belt on her left thigh, all in the same color scheme. Her Mew Pendant is attached to her choker, and she gains wolf ears and a tail to reflect her DNA infusion. Her Mew Mark, two wolf tails intertwined, appears on her abdomen near her navel.

In Tokyo Mew Mew New, Zakuro’s outfit maintains the core design but is updated with additional details. Her Mew Pendant appears as a purple ribbon with a heart-shaped gem at the center, while her garter includes an attached ribbon. She also wears fingerless gloves adorned with a white band and a small purple heart gem. Her hair is notably much longer in this version, reaching ankle length and styled in a high ponytail, enhancing her elegant and commanding appearance.

Personality

Zakuro is depicted as self-confident, independent, and mature, often serving as the older-sister figure among the Mew Mews. She frequently provides advice and guidance, stepping in to support the younger members during moments of crisis. Her strong sense of individuality makes her more inclined to work alone, and she initially resisted joining the team, preferring independence over collaboration.

She is also portrayed as intelligent and insightful, though she often conceals the extent of her knowledge. Zakuro occasionally confides in Ryou Shirogane, particularly when addressing internal conflicts within the group.

Perceptions of Zakuro vary among the Mew Mews: Ichigo Momomiya admires her as a dependable older sister figure, highlighting her calm and collected presence even in dangerous situations. Minto Aizawa idolizes her, treating Zakuro as a role model and source of inspiration. In contrast, Bu-Ling Huang and Retasu Midorikawa regard her as more approachable, viewing her simply as a normal individual rather than an untouchable figure.

Abilities

As a Civilian
Zakuro is a skilled dancer, singer, and professional model, talents that highlight her flexibility, rhythm, and stage presence. Her training in dance contributes to her agility, reflexes, and balance, which she adapts into a form of dance-based hand-to-hand combat. In addition, Zakuro is intelligent, multilingual, and capable in areas such as swimming. She also demonstrates proficiency with a whip, an ability reflected in the weapon she wields as a Mew Mew.

As a Mew Mew
As Mew Zakuro, her physical skills are greatly enhanced, particularly her agility and strength. Much like Ichigo’s ability to communicate with cats, Zakuro possesses the implied ability to communicate with canines. This is suggested in episode 21 of the anime, where she successfully persuades Mickey, Minto’s dog, to cooperate in her plan to bring Minto back to the team.

Etymology

The name Zakuro (ざくろ) is most commonly used in Japanese to refer to the pomegranate fruit, which aligns with the food-related naming theme shared by the Mew Mews. Her surname, Fujiwara (藤原), combines 藤 (fuji, “wisteria”) and 原 (hara/wara, “field” or “plain”). The use of wisteria, a genus of purple flowers, reflects Zakuro’s signature purple theme color and her refined, elegant character design.

Trivia

    • In the English adaptation Mew Mew Power, Zakuro’s weapon was censored due to its religious connotations.
      • Her cross pendant necklace was also censored in certain episodes, as were crosses depicted on churches.
        • Zakuro is described as being estranged from her family, having left home two years before the events of the series.
          • The manga provides little detail about Zakuro’s past, while the 2002 anime expands on her backstory and character motivations.
            • Zakuro’s animal counterpart, the gray wolf (Canis lupus), is currently classified as “least concern” on the IUCN Red List. However, some subspecies remain endangered, such as the Mexican wolf (C. l. baileyi). In Japan, both recognized wolf subspecies, the Hokkaido wolf (C. l. hattai) and the Japanese wolf (C. l. hodophilax) are now extinct.
