Yuzuru Otonashi

Yuzuru Otonashi is the main protagonist of Angel Beats!  and one of the newest recruits of the Afterlife Battlefront, known as the SSS. Following a tragic accident in his past life, he awakens in the Afterlife devoid of his memories. As he navigates this new realm, he becomes embroiled in the ongoing conflict between the SSS and a mysterious girl known as “Angel.”

Seeking a sense of belonging and safety, Otonashi joins the SSS while he works to recover his lost memories. Throughout the series, he emerges as a pivotal figure within the organization, influencing the ideals and motivations of its members. His leadership and unique perspective help the group endure significant challenges, ultimately enabling them to confront their greatest trials.

In a decisive turn of events, Otonashi plays a crucial role in shifting the balance of power during the conflict with Angel, whose true nature and intentions become clearer through his efforts. His interventions not only reshape the Battlefront but also highlight his growth as a character who embraces both camaraderie and the fight for redemption in the Afterlife.

Even in a place like this, where everything feels lost, I believe we can make a difference. It’s not just about surviving; it’s about finding the courage to face our regrets and help each other heal. We all have our battles, but together, we can create something beautiful out of the pain. I want to be a part of that—because everyone deserves a chance to find peace and move on.

Yuzuru Otonashi is a young man in his late teens, characterized by his short red hair and dark red-orange eyes. When he first arrives in the Afterlife, he is dressed in a standard Gakuran school uniform. However, upon joining the Afterlife Battlefront (SSS), he changes his attire to a white long-sleeved polo shirt paired with a sandy brown coat and black slacks, which gives him a more casual yet distinctive look. In his youth, Otonashi’s hair was slightly longer, often obscuring the left side of his face, adding a touch of youthful rebellion to his appearance.

Personality

During his middle school years, Yuzuru Otonashi was largely indifferent to academics and social interactions. He openly confessed to his sister that he preferred solitude, often choosing to play video games or watch television over studying or making friends. Even when engaged with games, he found little meaning in them, using the noise of the television merely for background distraction. His primary concern was to work enough to support himself and buy manga for his younger sister. This bleak outlook hinted at underlying struggles with depression, with thoughts of suicide occasionally crossing his mind. This perspective underwent a profound transformation after the tragic death of his sister.

Following her passing, Otonashi developed a deep desire to help others, dedicating himself to studying medicine despite never having attended high school. He sought out colleges that offered tuition waivers for medical students and worked tirelessly to fund his education. This journey turned him into a compassionate and intelligent individual, determined to assist those in need. In the train accident that ultimately led to his demise, he took charge by caring for injured survivors and rationing food and water. When one survivor attempted to steal water, Otonashi, demonstrating his selflessness, declared that the spilled water was his own share, ensuring that the remaining survivors had enough to drink. In his final moments, he mustered his remaining strength to sign up as an organ donor on the back of his ID, choosing to give the gift of life to others even after his own death.

In the Afterlife, Otonashi retains much of his pre-death personality, though he awakens with amnesia, struggling to make sense of his new surroundings and the antics of the Afterlife Battlefront. Throughout the Visual Novel, players have the opportunity to influence Otonashi’s character development through their choices, allowing for a more personalized experience of his journey.

Otonashi during his younger days.

Not much is known about Yuzuru Otonashi’s family beyond the existence of his younger sister, Hatsune, and possibly an elderly relative, speculated to be a grandmother. The absence of his parents indicates that he and Hatsune may have grown up as orphans.

During a difficult period in Otonashi’s life, Hatsune was hospitalized due to an unspecified medical condition. Struggling with feelings of purposelessness, he distanced himself from friends and led a solitary life, sustained by his part-time jobs. His primary focus was to earn enough money for food and basic living expenses. Despite his challenges, Otonashi made a point to visit Hatsune every day, bringing her manga magazines with the little money he had. He often bought whatever he saw first in the bookstore, sometimes unsure if he was giving her the same magazine repeatedly. Nonetheless, Hatsune always expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you so much, brother,” which brought him some solace.

As her condition worsened, Otonashi resolved to do something meaningful for her. He dreamed of sneaking Hatsune out of the hospital to experience the joys of life outside, particularly the festive Christmas decorations in their town. Ultimately, he fulfilled this wish, carrying her on his back to see the beautiful lights. Tragically, Hatsune passed away shortly after this outing, leaving Otonashi devastated. It was in her final moments that he realized what gave his life purpose: the joy he felt in making her happy.

However, on his way to the university for his entrance exams, tragedy struck again when the train he was on crashed. Upon regaining consciousness, he found himself in the aftermath of chaos, surrounded by injured and deceased passengers. Otonashi quickly formed a bond with Igarashi, another survivor of the crash. Utilizing his medical knowledge, he worked tirelessly to tend to the injuries of others. Unfortunately, one of the patients he helped died, reigniting his internal struggle with the meaning of his existence.

As they searched for an escape from the underground tunnel, Otonashi discovered he had sustained critical injuries as well but chose to conceal this from the increasingly despondent survivors. Along with Igarashi, he took on a leadership role, rationing the scant supplies they had to prolong their survival. Days passed, and hope dwindled as their situation grew increasingly dire.

Otonashi passes away as rescue reaches him.

Seven days post-crash, Otonashi and the remaining survivors were on the brink of collapse from exhaustion and starvation. Reflecting on his perceived failures and the futility of his existence, Otonashi suddenly recalled a poignant moment with Hatsune. He remembered her wish for an organ donor, which could have saved her life. In a moment of clarity, he resolved to take one last meaningful action. As he lay on the floor next to Igarashi, he pulled out an organ donor card and circled nearly every option, intending to give others a chance at life in the event of his passing.

Inspired by Otonashi’s selfless act, the other survivors followed suit, but as Otonashi’s condition worsened, he fell silent. Moments later, he died from his injuries, just as rescuers finally broke through to the tunnel. Tragically, while others would be saved, Otonashi would not live to see the impact of his final sacrifice.

Abilities

Upon his arrival in the Afterlife, Yuzuru Otonashi is initially inexperienced with weapons and lacks combat skills. He serves as a backup for Yuri Nakamura and the Afterlife Battlefront (SSS) but surprises everyone by rising to the occasion during critical moments. Through determination and self-training, he gradually becomes proficient in handling firearms, learning to defend himself and his comrades effectively.

Otonashi receives a Glock 17 from Yuri on his first day as a member of the SSS, which becomes his primary sidearm. By episode 5, his skills have further developed, as he is shown capable of operating an IMI Galil sniper rifle, indicating his growing competence in combat scenarios.

In addition to his physical skills, Otonashi demonstrates strong academic knowledge. He mentions that one physics exam he took in the Afterlife was “easier than expected,” a nod to his rigorous studies in medical school prior to his death. His background as a medical student not only contributes to his intelligence but also informs his analytical thinking and decision-making in stressful situations.

As the series progresses, Otonashi’s shooting abilities improve significantly, culminating in a moment where he successfully shoots an enemy without looking, all while engaged in conversation. His evolution from a novice to a capable fighter is complemented by his growing leadership skills, allowing him to think critically and make strategic decisions for the SSS, ultimately enhancing the group’s effectiveness in their ongoing struggle against the forces of the Afterlife.

Trivia

    • The title Angel Beats! is a nod to the deep bond between Otonashi and Kanade, culminating in the revelation that after Otonashi’s death, his heart was transplanted into the gravely ill Kanade, creating a profound connection between them as the heart that once belonged to him now beats within the girl known as Angel.
    • Otonashi’s first name remains undisclosed to the other SSS members until the series’ finale, leading everyone to refer to him solely by his surname throughout the story.
    • In the original anime, only Otonashi, Iwasawa, and Hinata have their causes of death revealed, although later materials clarify the fates of other characters.
    • Otonashi’s go-to drink appears to be canned coffee, as he is frequently seen sipping it, often with Yuri, who seems to carry a can whenever she waits for him.
    • Although not explicitly stated, Otonashi is suggested to be one of the oldest members of the battlefront, being just over eighteen at the time of his death as he was preparing for his university entrance exams. The only other character of similar age is Masami Iwasawa, who was a third-year student in the Angel Beats: Heaven’s Door manga prequel.
    • Unlike other characters, Otonashi has no regrets about his past, arriving in the afterlife because of Kanade’s wish to thank her heart donor. Her greatest regret was never being able to express her gratitude, and their meeting was essential for her to move on.
    • Otonashi is the only male character from the SSS to appear in the epilogue, where he attempts to tap the shoulder of the reincarnated Kanade after recognizing the melody of “My Song” that she hums.
    • Fans often draw parallels between Otonashi and the human developer of Angel Player, featured in the Angel Beats! special episode Another Epilogue. Both are left alone in the Afterlife following the departure of loved ones, but unlike the developer, Otonashi avoids falling into despair and does not become an NPC—at least not overtly.
    • Otonashi dies three times in the first seven minutes of Episode 1. He first asks Kanade to stab him with her Hand Sonic to prove he’s dead. He then gets killed by Noda, who strikes him with a halberd a hundred times, which only counts as one death. Lastly, he accidentally walks into a trap outside the principal’s office, not realizing it was the battlefront’s headquarters.
    • Despite being a newcomer to the SSS, Otonashi quickly forms a close friendship with the group’s founders, Hideki Hinata and Yuri Nakamura, and earns the respect and affection of other members. Notably, Iwasawa shares her past with him shortly after meeting.
    • Hinata becomes Otonashi’s quickest friend, a dynamic referenced in theAngel Beats: Heaven’s Doormanga, where the person Hinata explains the battlefront’s origins to bears a striking resemblance to Otonashi.
    • In the OVA Stairway to Heaven, while he doesn’t partake in the High Tension Syndrome, he manages to reach a Tension Level of 92 with his suggestion of a “Sports Festival” and amusingly states in English, “Nande no reaction?” (Why is there no reaction?).
    • Besides Yuri, Otonashi is one of the few to see Shiina’s genuine character and her affection for cute things, a revelation that later comes to Angel’s attention in the OVA, along with Ooyama, Fujimaki, and Yusa.
    • In Episode 3, it’s hinted that Otonashi shares an indirect kiss with Iwasawa when she offers him her water bottle, but he doesn’t drink from it, much to fans’ disappointment. This scene is echoed in theAngel Beats!manga adaptation, where Iwasawa has already finished the bottle.
    • In the Alternative Epilogue, Otonashi is shown still in the afterlife, where he converses with an unnamed student. If viewers look closely, they can spot pictures of the main SSS members displayed on the side of the screen, though it’s unclear how Otonashi obtained them.
    • It’s suggested that the SSS photos in the Alternative Epilogue could be crafted from dust, similar to how weapons are made in the Guild.
    • Otonashi bears a resemblance to Kyousuke Natsume from Little Busters!. Although they have different Japanese voice actors, they share the same English voice actor.
    • Otonashi and Meiko “Menma” Honma from Anohana share several traits: both died young due to accidents, maintain their cheerful natures in the afterlife, and form strong bonds with those around them. Notably, Otonashi had a sister named Hatsune who passed away before him, while Menma’s younger brother Satoshi is still alive.
    • In the Angel Beats! 1st Beat visual novel, Yuri reveals that Otonashi has a fanbase among the student body, a point later corroborated by Yusa.
    • Should players successfully complete Masami Iwasawa’s route in the Angel Beats! 1st Beat visual novel, Otonashi’s character can evolve to become both a husband and a father.

Theories

Timeline Discrepancies and Existence in the Afterlife

Otonashi’s arrival in the Afterlife raises intriguing questions about the timeline of the characters involved. He enters the Afterlife after Kanade Tachibana, suggesting that Yuri Nakamura and Hideki Hinata have been there for an extensive period, possibly decades. Their long tenure allows them to gather vital knowledge about Kanade’s abilities and the nature of the Afterlife, including understanding the NPCs and their limitations. This insight is critical for establishing the Guild that provides the SSS with their weaponry and support.

Flashback scenes hint that Kanade had friends before, but their fates ended in Obliteration. This suggests she has been in the Afterlife even longer than Yuri and emphasizes the complex history and emotional connections among the characters. Otonashi’s delayed entry could be attributed to his soul being “lost,” which prolongs his journey to the Afterlife. This aspect emphasizes the notion that souls have unique paths and timelines, complicating the straightforward narrative of death and rebirth.

Otonashi as a Catalyst for Kanade’s Release

A compelling theory posits that Otonashi’s presence in the Afterlife serves as a potential escape route for Kanade. He died before her, and their fates are intertwined—his heart, given to her in her moment of need, prolongs her life. Kanade’s regret for not thanking him becomes a driving force that keeps Otonashi wandering between realms. Once she arrives in the Afterlife, it sets the stage for their reunion, where he can finally fulfill his purpose: allowing her to acknowledge his sacrifice and move on.

This theory suggests that Otonashi may have intentionally lost his memories as a means of connecting with Kanade, who holds the key to his past. His amnesia serves a dual purpose: it enables him to bond with her and allows her the opportunity to confront her regrets. The unique nature of the Afterlife facilitates this dynamic, where Otonashi’s journey and actions can help Kanade and others like her move forward.

Wandering Souls and the Nature of Afterlife Existence

An interesting angle is the idea that Otonashi’s role in the Afterlife might extend beyond just aiding Kanade. The NPC’s mention to Yuri about the potential for someone who lived a fulfilled life to wander in the Afterlife hints at a broader cosmic design. Otonashi could embody this principle, brought forth to assist multiple souls struggling with their pasts.

The existence of Shiina in Track Zero further complicates timelines, indicating that time in Purgatory can be fluid, with souls becoming conscious at different points regardless of their actual time of death. This suggests that the Afterlife may not adhere to a linear timeline, allowing for interactions among characters from different eras, leading to overlapping narratives and relationships.

Reincarnation and the Concept of Lives A and B

Another theory revolves around the possibility that Otonashi’s soul was reincarnated after his death, entering a “Life B” while Kanade navigated her own path in the Afterlife. If Otonashi died without unresolved regrets, he may have been reincarnated quickly, leading a new life that diverted his essence away from the Afterlife for an extended period. Kanade, having received his heart, survives but is burdened by her regrets, which eventually lead her to the Afterlife.

In this scenario, Otonashi’s “Life B” continues until its conclusion, at which point he is sent back to the Afterlife, where he must help Kanade and others confront their pasts. His inability to recall details from either life creates a dramatic tension as he navigates his new role, while Yuri and Kanade continue their long-standing conflict. Otonashi’s arrival and subsequent development serve as a catalyst for change, enabling the other characters to confront their pasts and, ultimately, to find closure.

Conclusion

These theories illustrate the intricate narrative structure of Angel Beats!, emphasizing the interconnectivity of characters, timelines, and existential themes. Otonashi’s character serves as a focal point through which the broader themes of regret, redemption, and the importance of human connection are explored, making him a pivotal figure in the series’ exploration of the Afterlife.
