Yuuri Katsuki (勝生 勇利, Katsuki Yūri), is the protagonist of Yuri!!! on Ice and a competitive figure skater representing Japan on the global stage. Known for his technical precision and deeply emotional performances, Yuuri’s journey from a struggling skater plagued by self-doubt to a confident athlete striving for greatness forms the heart of the series. After a crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Final, Yuuri contemplates retiring from figure skating but finds renewed purpose when his idol, the legendary skater Victor Nikiforov, unexpectedly offers to become his coach. With Victor’s guidance, Yuuri embarks on a transformative journey, rediscovering his love for skating and forging new relationships that define his path forward.
Background

Appearance in anime
Yuuri was born and raised in Hasetsu, a small town in Kyushu, Japan. As the youngest child in a warm and supportive family, Yuuri grew up in the family-run hot spring inn, Yu-topia Katsuki, where he developed a love for skating at the local Ice Castle rink. His skating journey began when he was inspired by Victor Nikiforov’s performances as a child, idolizing Victor for his artistry and charisma on the ice.
Yuuri’s talent was evident early on, and he worked tirelessly to compete at the international level. However, his struggles with anxiety and self-confidence often hampered his ability to perform consistently, leading to a career of fluctuating results. After a disappointing performance at the Grand Prix Final, where he finished in last place, Yuuri returned home, disheartened and uncertain about his future in skating.
It was during this low point that Yuuri’s private performance of Victor’s routine, recorded and shared online by friends, caught the attention of the Russian champion himself. Inspired by Yuuri’s potential, Victor traveled to Hasetsu and offered to coach him, igniting a new chapter in Yuuri’s skating career and life.
Appearance
Yuuri has short, jet-black hair with a slightly messy fringe and dark brown eyes that convey his gentle and introspective nature. His round glasses, which he often wears off the ice, add to his reserved and intellectual appearance. Yuuri’s lean build is reflective of his years of rigorous skating training, though his love for food, particularly katsudon, gives him a slightly softer physique than his competitors.
On the ice, Yuuri’s costumes are sleek and elegant, designed to emphasize the emotional depth of his routines. His outfits often incorporate elements of Japanese culture, such as subtle patterns inspired by traditional designs, blending modern aesthetics with his heritage.
Personality
Yuuri is a deeply empathetic and introspective individual who often struggles with self-doubt and anxiety. Despite being one of the most talented skaters of his generation, he frequently underestimates his abilities and wrestles with imposter syndrome, which hinders his confidence during competitions. However, Yuuri is also fiercely determined and possesses an incredible work ethic, allowing him to push through setbacks and continue improving.
Beneath his reserved exterior, Yuuri harbors a playful and competitive side, which emerges as he grows more confident under Victor’s mentorship. His capacity for emotional expression, both on and off the ice, endears him to those around him and becomes one of his greatest strengths as a skater.
