Yuki Cross (黒主 優姫, Kurosu Yūki), is the main protagonist of Vampire Knight. Initially introduced as a human student and Guardian of Cross Academy, she is later revealed to be Yuki Kuran, a Pureblood vampire and the daughter of Haruka and Juri Kuran. Her life takes a dramatic turn when Kaname Kuran awakens her vampire nature, making her realize her forgotten past.
Following this, Yuki leaves Cross Academy with Kaname, accepting her identity as a Pureblood princess. However, she later returns to fulfill her adoptive father’s dream of peaceful coexistence between humans and vampires. Throughout the series, Yuki is caught in a complex love triangle between Kaname Kuran and Zero Kiryu, both of whom play pivotal roles in her life.
Background

Appearance in anime
Yuki’s earliest memory is being rescued from a vampire attack by Kaname Kuran when she was five years old. Afterward, she was adopted by Kaien Cross, the headmaster of Cross Academy, and raised as a human, completely unaware of her true vampire origins.
In reality, Yuki was born as a Pureblood vampire and the daughter of Haruka and Juri Kuran. Her parents sacrificed themselves to protect her from Rido Kuran, who sought to use her as a tool for his revival. To safeguard her from Rido and other Pureblood threats, her mother sealed away her vampire nature and erased her memories, allowing her to grow up as an ordinary human.
Throughout her childhood, Yuki formed a close friendship with Zero Kiryu, a boy whose parents were killed by a vampire. Together, they served as Guardians at Cross Academy, maintaining peace between the Day and Night Classes. However, her dormant vampire nature eventually resurfaces when Kaname awakens her true self, forcing her to grapple with her identity and past.
Appearance
Yuki has short, dark brown hair and large, expressive reddish-brown eyes that reflect her kind yet conflicted personality. Her petite build and delicate features often give her a youthful and innocent appearance.
Before awakening as a Pureblood vampire, she wears the Cross Academy Day Class uniform, consisting of a black blazer with white trims, a pleated skirt, a red ribbon, and knee-high socks. As a Guardian, she is often seen carrying Artemis, her anti-vampire weapon.
After regaining her memories, Yuki’s appearance subtly changes, reflecting her noble heritage. Her hair grows longer, and she often dons elegant vampire attire, including flowing gowns and formal dresses, further emphasizing her transformation into a Pureblood princess.
Personality
Yuki is kind-hearted, cheerful, and selfless, always putting others before herself. As a child, she was full of curiosity and warmth, never hesitating to befriend others, including Zero and Kaname. Despite the dangers surrounding vampires, Yuki remains idealistic, believing in the possibility of peace between humans and vampires.
However, beneath her bright demeanor lies a deep-seated fear and insecurity. Having grown up with no memories of her past, Yuki constantly struggles with her identity, often feeling out of place in both the human and vampire worlds.
After awakening as a Pureblood, Yuki’s personality matures. She becomes more reserved, composed, and dignified, though she retains her compassionate and self-sacrificing nature. Despite the weight of her heritage, she remains determined to protect those she loves, showing great inner strength and resilience.
Role in the Story

Her bond with Kaname Kuran and Zero Kiryu grows stronger, as both play crucial roles in protecting her and shaping her identity. -
Awakening as a Pureblood Vampire
Yuki’s true heritage is revealed when Kaname awakens her sealed vampire nature, restoring her memories of her past life as Yuki Kuran. This revelation shakes her sense of self, forcing her to grapple with the responsibilities of being a Pureblood princess. Following this, Yuki leaves Cross Academy with Kaname, embracing her identity as a Pureblood vampire and his fiancée. However, she struggles with the conflicting emotions she feels for both Kaname and Zero, leading to emotional turmoil and self-discovery. -
Return to Cross Academy and Final Conflict
Determined to fulfill her adoptive father’s dream of coexistence, Yuki returns to Cross Academy as the new leader of the Night Class. She hopes to bridge the gap between humans and vampires, though she faces opposition from vampire factions who see her as a threat. After his departure, she dedicates her life to his dream, continuing to work towards peace and unity between the two species.
Relationships
Kaname Kuran
Kaname is Yuki’s childhood protector, fiancé, and biological brother (through Pureblood lineage). From a young age, she was drawn to his kindness and mysterious aura, always seeing him as her savior and guardian. After learning her true identity, Yuki is torn between her love for Kaname and the duty she holds as a Pureblood princess. Though she initially accepts their engagement, she later realizes that Kaname harbors secrets and intentions beyond her understanding. Despite everything, Kaname remains one of the most significant people in Yuki’s life, influencing her choices, emotions, and future path.
Zero Kiryu
Zero is Yuki’s childhood friend and fellow Guardian, sharing a deep and complex bond with her. After the tragic loss of his family, Yuki became one of the few people he could trust, offering him comfort and companionship. Though Zero initially harbors hatred toward vampires, his relationship with Yuki softens his heart. Over time, his feelings evolve into love, though he suppresses them due to his conflicted emotions and duty as a vampire hunter. Zero and Yuki’s relationship is built on mutual trust, understanding, and emotional support, making their dynamic one of the most emotionally charged aspects of the series.
Kaien Cross
Kaien is Yuki’s adoptive father and the former vampire hunter turned pacifist. He raised her with love and care, always encouraging her idealistic belief in peace between humans and vampires. Even after learning about her true identity, Kaien continues to support her unconditionally, guiding her through her struggles and responsibilities as a Pureblood vampire.
