Yūichirō Hyakuya (百夜 優一郎, Hyakuya Yūichirō), birth name Yūichirō Amane(天音 優一郎, Amane Yūichirō), is the protagonist of the anime and manga series Seraph of the End (Owari no Seraph). He is a human with the “seraph” gene, granting him extraordinary potential and placing him at the center of a long-running conflict between humans, vampires, and higher powers.
Raised in captivity alongside his orphanage family in a vampire city, Yūichirō harbors a deep hatred for vampires after losing his family in a tragic escape attempt orchestrated by Ferid Bathory. Following the escape, he becomes the sole survivor and joins the Japanese Imperial Demon Army to exact vengeance on vampires and protect humanity.
Appearance
Appearance in Manga
Yūichirō Hyakuya is characterized by his choppy, medium-length jet-black hair and large green eyes, which are framed by thick eyebrows. As a livestock, he wears the standard white uniform with short sleeves and a hood.
In Vampire Reign, when Yūichirō is sent to school for his behavior, he is depicted wearing a gakuran school uniform, which has a standing collar. The jacket is black with teal trim, and the collar along with the top buttons are unbuttoned, revealing a white shirt underneath. He wields a standard demon katana before being promoted to the Moon Demon Company.
As a private in the Demon Army, Yūichirō wears the standard JIDA uniform, which includes a long-sleeved black coat with light green details. His coat features shoulder epaulettes and a brown Sam Browne belt passing diagonally over his right shoulder, with two rows of gold buttons on the front. His uniform is completed with white gloves, a white web belt with a gold waist-plate, uniform trousers, and black boots that go over the trouser’s leggings. He typically keeps his katana at his left hip. Sometimes, he is seen wearing the JIDA hat or cape.
In his demon form, Yūichirō’s eyes turn scarlet, black horns sprout from his head, his teeth become pointed, and curse marks appear on his face. In his most extreme form, his hand can briefly appear inhuman.
When Yūichirō enters his incomplete seraph form, his left eye becomes dark and begins to bleed, while a massive wing-like structure emerges from his upper left shoulder. In his full seraph form, Yūichirō gains a pair of irregular black wings, resulting from Asuramaru’s interference with the transformation. His sclerae turn dark with gold irises, and the edges of his hair turn white. In his past, Yūichirō possessed six white feathered seraph wings. At one point, he even went as far as slicing off his own arm to further his transformation.
Personality
Yūichirō Hyakuya is initially a grumpy and distant individual, shaped by the tragedies of his early life. As a child, he viewed himself as a demon, unworthy of love, largely due to his parents’ attempt to kill him. His early years were marked by a reluctance to connect with others, particularly his fellow orphans, as he had little faith in the concept of family. Over time, though, he became more like the older brother figure to the Hyakuya orphans, especially when he was placed in charge by Mika, alongside Akane, to look after the other kids. Despite his aloof demeanor, he displayed a kindhearted nature toward his family.
After losing his family, Yūichirō became consumed by a thirst for revenge against the vampires who had killed them. His single-minded pursuit of vengeance led him to become a fierce, rebellious individual who resisted making any new bonds. However, over time, as he continued to mature, his character evolved, and he became a hot-blooded youth driven by both his anger and a growing sense of empathy. Yūichirō’s personality is marked by recklessness and impulsiveness—he rushes into dangerous situations, often disregarding orders and cautions, as demonstrated by his relentless pursuit of vampires despite the risks. While this often leads others to call him “an idiot,” it is also a reflection of his deep desire for justice, particularly concerning the loss of his orphanage family, especially Mika.
Though Yūichirō’s actions often appear impulsive, they are also fueled by a concern for others. He worries about his comrades and shows concern for their emotional well-being, even if it means questioning his own motivations. For instance, he hesitates when Yoichi expresses a similar thirst for revenge, warning him of the consequences of such an all-consuming desire. His deep guilt over leaving Mika behind, believing he caused his death, plagues him, manifesting in nightmares and an intense emotional conflict. This inner turmoil becomes a key aspect of his development as he tries to reconcile his desire for revenge with his evolving sense of responsibility to others.
Upon learning that Mika is alive, Yūichirō’s personality shifts dramatically. He becomes more mature and calm, as he shifts his focus from revenge to saving Mika. The realization that Mika’s transformation into a vampire is something he feels responsible for leads to a deeper sense of guilt, but also drives him to protect Mika at all costs. His obsession with annihilating vampires is tempered by his new goal: to save Mika and free him from the vampiric curse. This marks a significant shift in Yūichirō’s character, as his worldview broadens from mere vengeance to a deeper understanding of family, responsibility, and the importance of bonds.
As he matures, Yūichirō becomes more patient and willing to trust others, forming stronger connections with his squad. He is no longer the lone wolf solely driven by personal vengeance but rather an individual focused on protecting those he cares about, even if it means making sacrifices. His shift from revenge to protection is also reflected in his efforts to improve the relationships with his comrades, showing more care and concern for their well-being.
Yūichirō’s demon transformation, known as Namanari, is a manifestation of his darker impulses. In his demon form, he alternates between earnest deception and fury, attempting to manipulate others or threatening violence to get what he wants. He tries to persuade Mika to free him by offering his blood and promising a life of freedom together, only to spiral into uncontrollable rage when he is denied. His demon form is marked by a loss of control, as he displays a violent desire to kill and consume souls, showing no regard for the lives of others.
Despite the terrifying nature of his demon form, Yūichirō retains some semblance of his humanity. He is still capable of rational thought, though it is often clouded by his aggressive instincts. His rage is often triggered by seeing injustice or being pushed to his limits, but there are moments when he can suppress the more ferocious aspects of his demon form, especially when he takes medication to suppress his transformation. The shift from being a vengeful, impulsive youth to a mature individual who values relationships is evident as he continues to struggle with his demon nature, constantly seeking balance between his humanity and his newfound powers.
By the end of his journey, Yūichirō’s focus shifts away from vengeance to protecting those he cares about. His growth is evident in how he values his squad and is willing to fight for them, as well as his willingness to protect Mika despite the latter’s vampire nature. Yūichirō’s ultimate goal becomes finding a way to save Mika, which trumps his original desire to annihilate all vampires. This new sense of purpose marks the culmination of his emotional growth, moving from anger to a more tempered, protective love for his family.
His experiences, both as a human and demon, have reshaped him into a leader who recognizes the value of bonds and is willing to fight for them, regardless of the cost.
Story
Yuichirou Hyakuya’s Early Life and Tragedy
Yuichirō Hyakuya’s tragic journey begins when his parents attempt to murder him, leaving him abandoned at the Hyakuya Orphanage. There, he meets Mikaela Hyakuya, and despite initially pushing others away, forms close bonds with Mika and the other orphans. However, an apocalyptic event changes everything, as vampires emerge and ravage the world. Yu, along with the surviving children, is taken to an underground vampire city where he lives for the next four years.
Yu’s time in the vampire city is marked by resentment and a growing desire for freedom. His anger escalates when he discovers Mika’s blood is being given to the vampire noble Ferid Bathory. Despite feeling betrayed by Mika’s actions, Yu’s bond with him remains strong. Eventually, Mika brings back a map that shows a way out of the vampire city, and Yu, alongside the other orphans, attempts to escape. Tragically, Ferid reveals that the escape plan was a ruse, and in a brutal turn of events, the orphans are murdered. In a heart-wrenching moment, Yu is forced to leave Mika behind to escape, marking the beginning of his intense thirst for revenge.
The Hyakuya Orphans and His Path to Vengeance
After the loss of his family, Yu becomes consumed with anger, vowing to take revenge against the vampires. He joins the Demon Army under the command of Guren Ichinose and begins training as a soldier. His once distant and grumpy personality shifts into that of a rebellious, hot-blooded youth determined to exterminate all vampires, particularly the ones responsible for the death of his family, especially Mika. Although he resists making new bonds, he is reluctantly drawn to his comrades and begins to form deeper connections with them over time.
Yu’s reckless behavior leads him into frequent conflict with others, including his squad members. He is often seen disregarding orders, charging headfirst into danger, and rushing into situations without thinking. However, his willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good and his unwavering commitment to his mission begins to earn the respect of those around him. Despite his impulsiveness, Yu cares deeply about his squad and is willing to protect them, particularly after he sees the lengths they go to for each other.
Mika’s Survival and Yu’s Transformation
Four years after escaping the vampire city, Yu is sent on various missions to fight vampires, culminating in an encounter with Mika, who has survived and been transformed into a vampire. This revelation deeply shakes Yu, as he sees Mika—his closest friend—now an enemy. Despite this, Yu remains determined to save Mika, his deep guilt over leaving him behind fueling his resolve. During a battle, Yu experiences a surge of power and undergoes a transformation into a demonic being, sprouting a wing and losing control of his emotions. This marks the beginning of Yu’s struggle between his human side and the demonic power within him.
Yu’s transformation is triggered by his deep emotional turmoil and the discovery that Mika is alive, albeit as a vampire. His fierce desire to protect his family overrides his former thirst for revenge, and he resolves to save Mika from his vampiric curse. This shift in priorities causes Yu to become more mature and patient, though he is still driven by the need to protect those he cares about and destroy the vampires who threaten them.
Journey of Redemption and Power Struggles
Yu’s evolution continues as he navigates the complexities of his mission to defeat the vampire nobility, led by powerful figures such as Kureto Hīragi and Ferid Bathory. His mission takes him across various territories, facing increasingly difficult challenges. Along the way, Yu comes to terms with the fact that his vendetta against vampires has become intertwined with his need to protect his comrades and friends, as well as his desire to rescue Mika from his vampiric state.
In the aftermath of the mission to rescue Guren, Yu finds himself partially transformed into a demon once again. He begins to question the true motives of the humans he fights alongside and is further torn by the realization that they may be using him for their own agendas. However, Yu’s commitment to Mika and his squad keeps him focused on his goal to free Mika from the vampire curse.
Confronting His Own Humanity
Yu’s struggle intensifies when he is forced to confront his own nature. As his demon side becomes more uncontrollable, Yu’s inner conflict grows. He is caught between his desire for vengeance and his new-found responsibility to protect those around him. The more he taps into his demonic powers, the more he risks losing his humanity altogether. Yet, even in his darkest moments, Yu strives to maintain his connections with others, particularly with Mika, whom he continues to see as family.
The final stage of Yu’s transformation into a demonic entity occurs when he faces the seraphs and is forced to confront his deepest trauma. With the power of the King of Salt and the awakening of his seraph form, Yu becomes an even more formidable warrior. He is determined to rescue Mika, even if it means sacrificing himself in the process. The battle between his demonic nature and his human emotions comes to a head, and Yu must decide what kind of person he wants to be whether he will succumb to the darkness inside him or continue to fight for the people he loves.
Powers and Abilities
Natural Abilities
Swordsmanship
Yuichirō is an extremely skilled swordsman, having been trained by Guren Ichinose. He is highly adept with both standard swords and Cursed Gear blades. His combat style revolves around closing distances rapidly and attacking with immense speed and force, often overwhelming his opponents before they can react. His agility and reaction time make him a formidable adversary in battle. Yu has proven capable of slaying common vampires with ease and has even defeated Horsemen of John, thanks to his proficient swordsmanship.
Sword Fighting Against Skilled Opponents
Despite his age and relatively short experience, Yuichirō has been able to hold his own against formidable opponents in sword fights. He fought against Shinoa Hiragi using her demon form, Shikama Dōji, and earned her praise for his skills. He also went up against Guren in a training exercise, where Yu showed impressive resilience and technique, although Guren was holding back during the sparring session. His swordsmanship is further highlighted when he pressured Aoi Sangū during a battle, forcing her to block his attack on Kureto Hīragi, which earned him her respect.
Demon Synchronization
Yu’s strength drastically improves when he synchronizes with his demon, Asuramaru, a powerful weapon that enhances his abilities. While his mind becomes unstable when he taps into his demonic power, Yu gains heightened strength, speed, and additional combat techniques that increase his effectiveness in battle. This power boost allows him to overpower some of his previous limits, though he is still struggling to control the chaotic energy and influence of his demon form.
Tactical Combat
Beyond his raw swordsmanship, Yu’s tactical thinking and ability to engage in high-pressure combat situations are remarkable. He is quick to adapt during battles, choosing to overwhelm his enemies with swift and aggressive tactics. His ability to rapidly close the distance between him and his opponents, followed by a series of well-executed strikes, showcases his understanding of combat dynamics.
Weakness
Emotional Instability
Yuichirō’s use of his demonic abilities comes with a significant drawback. His emotional instability, particularly the trauma from his past, can sometimes cause his demon form to go out of control. This makes him prone to moments of reckless behavior, especially when his emotions overwhelm his judgment. Despite his impressive abilities, Yu is still learning how to master and harness his demonic powers without losing his humanity.
Lack of Control Over His Demon Form
Although Yu’s synchronization with Asuramaru significantly boosts his physical abilities, his demon form is still difficult to control. His mind becomes blurry and unstable when using its power, which can put him in a dangerous state, making him vulnerable to attacks if he is not careful. This instability is a critical factor in his battle strategies, as he can become unpredictable and hard to manage.
Limited Strategic Experience
Despite being a formidable warrior, Yuichirō’s lack of extensive tactical experience puts him at a disadvantage when faced with larger-scale battles or more seasoned strategists. He can sometimes be overly aggressive and fails to consider the long-term consequences of his actions, which may lead to impulsive decisions during critical moments.
Enhanced Abilities Post-Synchronization
Increased Strength and Speed
The synchronization with Asuramaru enhances Yuichirō’s natural abilities, making him much faster and stronger. His physical prowess reaches superhuman levels, allowing him to take on multiple powerful opponents at once, a feat that would have been impossible in his human form alone.
Advanced Combat Techniques
Yuichirō begins to unlock new techniques when using his demon form. These techniques allow him to utilize his combat skills in more creative and deadly ways, including enhanced sword strikes and speed. The power boost granted by Asuramaru provides Yu with additional options for countering and overwhelming enemies, though it also comes with the risk of losing control.
Demonic Abilities
When Yu fully embraces his demon side, he can manifest a terrifying presence that extends beyond just physical enhancements. His demonic wings, horns, and other transformations make him an even more intimidating figure in battle, capable of engaging in high-level demon-based combat. However, this form leaves him vulnerable to losing his humanity, and it takes great effort to maintain his mental clarity while using this power.
Relationships
Mikaela Hyakuya
Mikaela is Yūichirō’s closest friend and surrogate brother. Their bond drives much of the series’ emotional weight, as Yūichirō is determined to save Mikaela from his vampiric transformation.
Guren Ichinose
Guren serves as Yūichirō’s mentor, guiding him in combat and demon handling. While their relationship is often tense, Yūichirō respects Guren’s leadership and sacrifices.
Shinoa Hīragi
Shinoa, the leader of Yūichirō’s squad, provides a sarcastic but caring dynamic to his team. Their camaraderie grows as they fight together against overwhelming odds.
Squad Members
Yūichirō forms strong bonds with Yoichi Saotome, Shihō Kimizuki, and Mitsuba Sangū, treating them as family and vowing to protect them at all costs.
Legacy
Yūichirō Hyakuya is a central figure in Seraph of the End, embodying themes of revenge, redemption, and the importance of family. His journey from a vengeful orphan to a protector of his comrades highlights his emotional growth and resilience. As a character entangled in ancient conspiracies and modern conflicts, Yūichirō’s role in the story continues to unfold, making him a compelling and dynamic protagonist.
