Yui Funami (船見 結衣, Funami Yui), is one of the main characters in the YuruYuri manga and anime series, created by Namori. Calm, composed, and often the voice of reason, Yui is known for her cool-headed personality and dry sense of humor, frequently acting as the straight man (tsukkomi) in the series’ many comedic situations. She is a founding member of the Amusement Club and plays a central role in the everyday antics of the main cast.
In addition to the original YuruYuri manga, anime, and associated OVAs and ONAs, Yui also appears in spin-off series such as Reset! and Ōmuro-ke, where she supports side characters with her reliable demeanor. She is also a main protagonist in the comedic isekai parody spin-off Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken.
Background

Appearance in anime
Yui is a second-year middle school student at Nanamori Middle School and a core member of the Amusement Club, which was founded alongside her childhood friend, Kyoko Toshino, after they inherited the Tea Club room. Unlike her more eccentric peers, Yui is highly independent and lives alone, a rarity among her classmates.
Her household independence, mature aura, and dependable nature have made her a pillar of stability within the group, though she is often teased or dragged into ridiculous situations by Kyoko and others. Despite her occasional exasperation, Yui clearly values her friendships deeply.
Appearance
Yui has short, dark blue hair and cool gray-blue eyes, typically portrayed with a neutral or slightly stern expression. Her school uniform is worn neatly, reflecting her personality, and her casual attire is usually simple and modest. Her appearance contrasts with her more flamboyant friends, enhancing her role as the grounded character in the group.
In fantasy and parody spin-offs, Yui’s appearance may change to suit different themes (e.g., swordswoman outfits in Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken), though her stoic demeanor remains intact.
Personality
Yui is known for her level-headed, rational, and mature personality. While not emotionless, she often refrains from showing strong feelings, preferring to observe and offer dry commentary. She frequently acts as the tsukkomi in response to her friends’ wild behavior, especially Kyoko’s.
Although she appears reserved, Yui is deeply loyal and caring, always willing to help her friends when they truly need her. She also has a soft side that occasionally surfaces particularly when flustered or embarrassed, much to the amusement of others.
Her love for video games is one of her defining hobbies, and she often retreats into gaming when she wants peace. This introverted trait makes her highly relatable to viewers who appreciate calm, quiet characters.
Role in the Story
-
Core Member of the Amusement Club
Yui is one of the original members of the Amusement Club, formed with Kyoko. While the club doesn’t serve any official school function, it becomes a central hub for the group’s interactions and comedic chaos. Yui is usually the one keeping things in check and bringing balance to the otherwise energetic dynamics of Kyoko, Akari, and Chinatsu. -
Relationships with Other Characters
Yui’s role often centers on reacting to and supporting her friends, whether it’s helping Akari cope with being overlooked, calming Chinatsu’s obsessive crushes, or reigning in Kyoko’s over-the-top energy. Despite her aloof image, her strong relationships with her peers show that she deeply values connection even if she struggles to express it. -
Spin-Off Appearances
In Ōmuro-ke, Yui makes cameo appearances and interactions with the Ōmuro sisters. In Reset!, she serves a similar supportive role. In Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken, Yui is reimagined in a fantasy setting, taking on a leading role with her usual composure intact while navigating isekai absurdity.
Relationships
Kyoko Toshino
Yui’s childhood friend and closest companion. Despite Kyoko’s hyperactivity and recklessness, Yui is remarkably tolerant and loyal to her. Their bond is strong, and while Yui often appears annoyed by Kyoko’s antics, it’s clear she genuinely cares for her.
Akari Akaza
Though Akari is often overshadowed, Yui treats her with kindness and respect, offering her encouragement when she feels down. Yui is one of the few characters who consistently acknowledges Akari’s presence.
Chinatsu Yoshikawa
Chinatsu’s unrequited crush on Yui is a frequent source of comedic tension. Yui is extremely uncomfortable with Chinatsu’s over-the-top advances but never reacts with cruelty, instead trying to handle the situation with as much calm as possible.
