Yugiri (ゆうぎり, Yūgiri), is a high-ranking courtesan from the Meiji era and one of the seven zombie idols in Franchouchou. Before her untimely death, she played a crucial role in the early movement for Saga’s independence, making her a key historical figure. After being resurrected, she takes on a new role as an idol, bringing her elegance, wisdom, and traditional charm to Franchouchou. Due to her background, she is honored with the title of “The Legendary Courtesan” (伝説の花魁 Densetsu no Oiran).
Background

Appearance in anime
Yugiri was born and raised during the Meiji era, a period of great cultural transformation in Japan. She was a renowned oiran (high-ranking courtesan), known for her grace, beauty, and intelligence. Unlike lower-ranking courtesans, oiran were highly educated in music, poetry, and etiquette, making Yugiri a woman of refinement and sophistication.
During her lifetime, she became entangled in political unrest, aligning herself with a young revolutionary who sought to bring independence to Saga. Her involvement in this movement ultimately led to her execution, as she was seen as a threat to the ruling authorities.
After her tragic death, she was resurrected over a century later by Kotaro Tatsumi to become a member of Franchouchou. Despite her vastly different time period, Yugiri adapts surprisingly well to modern life, bringing a sense of calm wisdom and elegance to the group.
Appearance
Yugiri maintains the traditional beauty of a Meiji-era courtesan. She has long, flowing auburn hair styled in an elaborate oiran updo, often adorned with ornamental hairpieces. Her sharp, golden eyes give her an air of maturity and wisdom. She wears traditional kimono-inspired outfits, often decorated with floral patterns, reflecting her grace and refinement.
Despite being a zombie, her appearance is well-preserved, and she carries herself with dignity and poise, making her stand out among her more modern teammates.
Personality
Yugiri is the epitome of elegance, patience, and wisdom. She rarely loses her composure, maintaining a gentle and understanding demeanor even in chaotic situations. Her background as an oiran has made her highly skilled in reading people’s emotions, and she often acts as the group’s motherly figure, offering advice and guidance to her younger teammates.
Though she carries a calm and refined presence, Yugiri is far from passive. She is bold and decisive, unafraid to take action when necessary. She has a sharp wit and enjoys teasing her fellow idols, particularly Saki Nikaido, who contrasts greatly with her personality.
Despite being from a completely different era, she adapts well to modern times, finding humor and enjoyment in the quirks of contemporary life. However, she still carries a deep respect for tradition and often incorporates classic Japanese elements into her idol performances.
Role in the Story
-
Bringing Wisdom and Guidance to Franchouchou
As the oldest member of Franchouchou (in terms of historical origin), Yugiri often acts as a mentor and calming presence within the group. When conflicts arise, she mediates arguments and offers sage advice, helping her teammates navigate their struggles. -
Saga Independence and Her Past
Yugiri’s past as a revolutionary figure is one of the most intriguing aspects of her character. She was deeply involved in early efforts for Saga’s independence, though she ultimately paid the price for her activism. Throughout the series, her past is slowly revealed, showing her courage and determination in an era where women had little freedom. Her legacy serves as a source of inspiration for the modern Franchouchou, reinforcing their mission of revitalizing Saga through music and performance. -
Adapting to the Modern World
Coming from the Meiji era, Yugiri faces many cultural shocks in the present day. However, rather than resist change, she embraces new experiences with curiosity. Her interactions with modern technology, slang, and entertainment often lead to humorous moments, but she always maintains her grace. -
Performing as an Idol
Despite her background as an oiran, Yugiri transitions smoothly into her role as an idol. Her performances are often influenced by traditional Japanese aesthetics, incorporating elegant dances and classical themes. Her deep, soothing voice and graceful movements make her one of the group’s most captivating members.
Relationships
Sakura Minamoto
Yugiri views Sakura as the heart of Franchouchou and often offers encouragement when she is feeling doubtful. She admires Sakura’s optimism and resilience, gently guiding her whenever she lacks confidence.
Saki Nikaido
Despite their contrasting personalities, Yugiri and Saki share a close bond. Yugiri finds Saki’s brash and energetic personality amusing, often teasing her in a lighthearted manner. In return, Saki respects Yugiri’s wisdom, often turning to her for advice.
Ai Mizuno & Junko Konno
Yugiri shares a special connection with Ai and Junko due to their idol backgrounds. Though she doesn’t fully understand modern idol culture, she respects Ai’s confidence and Junko’s refinement, often offering them insight from her own experiences as a performer.
Lily Hoshikawa
Yugiri finds Lily’s innocence and energy adorable, treating her like a younger sibling. She enjoys listening to Lily’s perspective on modern pop culture and often joins in on her playful antics.
Kotaro Tatsumi
Yugiri is one of the few members of Franchouchou who rarely takes Kotaro’s loud antics seriously. She finds his eccentric personality amusing, but she also recognizes his passion for reviving Saga, which she quietly supports.
