Yozora Mikazuki (三日月 夜空, Mikazuki Yozora) is the female deuteragonist of the Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai series. She is the founder, first member, and president of the Neighbors Club, a group created with the purpose of learning how to make friends. Known for her prideful and sharp-tongued personality, Yozora harbors a deep dislike for so-called “normals,” which contributes to her social isolation and inability to form friendships.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Yozora is characterized by her anti-social tendencies, sharp wit, and prideful nature. She often comes across as manipulative, sarcastic, and dismissive, frequently ridiculing those around her—especially Sena Kashiwazaki, whom she views as the archetype of a riajū (a “normal” or popular person). Yozora detests such “normals” and even refers to the student council president Hinata Hidaka as the “King of the Normals.” Despite this hostility, her actions suggest that her ridicule is rooted in insecurity and her own difficulties in forming connections.
Highly intelligent and persuasive, Yozora often manipulates or tricks others into following her lead, with nearly every member of the Neighbors Club having been deceived by her at least once (with the exception of Rika Shiguma). She values privacy and dislikes crowded places or discussions of personal matters such as romance and careers, preferring solitude.
While Yozora often projects a harsh and cold image, she is far more sensitive and vulnerable than she admits. She can display deep empathy in rare moments, such as crying tears of joy when Kodaka recognized her as his childhood friend Sora, or breaking down when identifying with a lonely character in an otome game. These glimpses reveal her longing for companionship beneath her defensive exterior.
Her past trauma contributes greatly to her outlook: losing the stray cat “Night” she had shared with Kodaka, combined with Kodaka’s sudden disappearance during childhood, left her fearful of forming bonds to avoid future pain. This wariness often translates into mistrust of people who appear overly friendly at first meetings.
Despite her flaws, Yozora demonstrates that she genuinely cares for the Neighbors Club. She canceled a planned movie for the school festival when Rika fell ill, declaring it meaningless if not enjoyed together by all members. She also defended Kobato Hasegawa’s membership when it was threatened by Aoi Yusa. These moments, along with her gradual warmth toward her peers, illustrate her growth and the value she places on the club’s existence.
Yozora remains deeply attached to her childhood friendship with Kodaka, treasuring their past to the point of anger when others dismiss it as irrelevant. Her longing for that bond is one of her driving motivations for establishing the Neighbors Club, and while her relationship with Kodaka and the other members is often complicated, she treasures them deeply.
At her core, Yozora is prone to melancholy and pessimism, but she is also capable of selflessness, willing to sacrifice her reputation and comfort to help those who share the pain of loneliness she has endured.
Appearance
In the early volumes of the series, Yozora is described as a beautiful girl with long, flowing black hair, which she often decorates with small pink ribbons tied at the ends. Following the incident at the school festival in Volume 3, where fireworks damaged the lower part of her hair, she cuts it short. Over time, her hair gradually grows back, reaching medium length by the end of Volume 11. Yozora also has purple eyes, which contribute to her striking appearance.
She is most commonly depicted wearing her St. Chronica’s Academy uniform, though outside of school she favors boyish, casual clothing that allows her to appear inconspicuous in public. After an incident in Volume 6, in which she was embarrassed upon realizing that her casual outfits could be interpreted as “sexy,” she began wearing dark sweaters that cover much of her body. In addition, Yozora owns a black-and-white striped full-body swimsuit.
In her childhood, Yozora often dressed in boyish attire, which caused Kodaka to mistake her for a boy. Her outfit as “Sora” included a purple-yellow v-neck shirt, a brown jacket, and blue jeans, paired with yellow-and-white sneakers with red stripes and a red-and-white cap marked with the letter “S.”
Abilities
Intelligence
Yozora is highly intelligent, consistently achieving excellent academic results, even scoring full marks in Modern Japanese during the semestral tests. Her sharp mind, coupled with her ability to read people, allows her to manipulate and outwit others with ease. She often uses these skills to gain the upper hand within the Neighbor’s Club, such as when she immobilized Sena by exploiting her body’s center of gravity during a sunscreen incident or when she pretended to perform poorly on exams to expose Kodaka’s comparatively average scores.
Despite her intelligence, Yozora is notably inexperienced in matters of love and romance. She reacts with confusion or discomfort when exposed to romantic or sexual themes, preferring platonic relationships. This explains her distaste for Sena’s eroge games, as her dislike stems less from their explicit nature and more from their romantic content.
Yozora also possesses exceptional memorization skills, demonstrated when she recited the school’s rules during her confrontation with Student Council treasurer Aoi Yusa. This allowed her to protect Kobato’s membership in the club and safeguard the Neighbor’s Club itself. Additionally, her strong leadership qualities have been acknowledged by both Aoi and Kodaka, who consider her capable enough to serve as Student Council president.
Physical Abilities
Though not physically overwhelming, Yozora has shown considerable strength and resilience. In her childhood, she and Kodaka were able to fend off bullies together, and later, she was strong enough to lift Kodaka by his collar during one of Rika’s antics. She also has sharp reflexes, often displayed when she wields her fly swatter as a disciplinary tool, typically against Sena.
However, Yozora struggles with low stamina, which is especially apparent during heated debates or extended interactions with unfamiliar people, often leaving her exhausted. She has some skill in basketball, but her abilities pale in comparison to Sena’s athleticism.
Domestic Abilities
Unlike Kodaka, Yozora is poor at household chores, especially cooking. This weakness stems from a personal trauma involving her mother, which left her with a fear of knives and prevented her from developing culinary skills. In home economics classes, she often ate food offered by classmates out of pity rather than cooking for herself.
Relationships
Kodaka Hasegawa
Yozora and Kodaka were childhood friends who once considered each other best friends. Their bond was strong during their youth, but after Kodaka suddenly moved away ten years earlier, Yozora was left deeply shaken. Kodaka himself speculates that her sudden shift toward antisocial behavior may have been triggered by the trauma of his disappearance.
When Kodaka returned, Yozora recognized him immediately as “Taka,” the boy from her past. However, to her dismay, Kodaka did not recognize her in return understandable, as he had always believed “Sora” was a boy and had never learned her real name. Although their relationship is no longer the same as it was during childhood, they remain closer than most of the other club members, something Rika has noted.
Sena Kashiwazaki
From their very first encounter, Yozora displayed a strong dislike toward Sena. She constantly belittles her with harsh words, showing little sympathy or kindness. This hostility is fueled by jealousy toward Sena’s beauty, status, and confidence, which stand in stark contrast to Yozora’s own insecurities. Ironically, Yozora’s relentless teasing gradually helps Sena become less arrogant over time.
Despite their constant bickering, Kodaka once observed that their dynamic resembles that of friends teasing each other. On occasions, Yozora has shown genuine concern when her insults went too far—such as when she noticed Sena’s anger and felt relief once Sena calmed down, especially when Sena shifted her attention toward Kobato.
Yukimura Kusunoki
Like the rest of the club, Yozora initially believed Yukimura to be male. She even conspired to confuse Kodaka by convincing Yukimura to wear a maid outfit and serve him. When Yukimura’s true gender was revealed, Yozora was surprised and unsettled by the fact that “a kind, obedient, and attractive girl” had been serving Kodaka all along. In an attempt to downplay Yukimura’s femininity, Yozora dressed her in a butler uniform instead. Ironically, this only highlighted Yukimura’s charm, since the “female butler” archetype was already popularized in fiction.
Compared to her treatment of Sena, Yozora’s behavior toward Yukimura is more neutral. She rarely insults her directly, and among the Neighbor’s Club, Yukimura is one of the few individuals Yozora treats with a level of restrained respect. Still, Yozora subtly views Yukimura as a potential rival for Kodaka’s attention.
Etymology
Yozora’s given name Yozora (夜空) literally means “night sky”, reflecting both her dark personality and her tendency to appear distant or unreachable, much like the stars. Her surname Mikazuki (三日月) translates to “crescent moon”. Together, her full name can be interpreted as “crescent moon in the night sky”, which symbolically fits her solitary and melancholic nature.
The name also alludes to her role in the series as Kodaka’s childhood friend “Sora” (空, sky), tying her present identity to her past. The imagery of the sky and moon emphasizes her connection to themes of loneliness, change, and fleeting bonds.
