Did You Know?

Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Yōsuke Hirata

Yōsuke Hirata (平田 洋介, Hirata Yōsuke) is a second-year student at Advanced Nurturing High School in the Classroom of the Elite series. At the start of the story, he is introduced as the class representative of Class 1-D, occupying the leftmost seat in the second row, next to Kei Karuizawa. He is known for his intelligence, strong leadership, and ability to maintain harmony within the class, making him one of the most respected students in Class 1-D.

In addition to his academic excellence, Hirata is a member of the Soccer Club, demonstrating his athletic abilities. Despite having grades that could have placed him in a higher-ranking class, he was assigned to Class 1-D for reasons that remain unexplained. Throughout the series, he plays a crucial role in managing class relationships, often acting as a mediator and problem-solver during conflicts.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Yōsuke Hirata presents himself as a mature and approachable individual who rarely loses his temper. He has a charismatic and friendly nature, which has made him a well-liked figure among his classmates. His warm and compassionate personality naturally led to him being recognized as Class 1-D’s representative, as he gained the trust of his peers while also attracting the admiration of several female classmates, most notably Kei Karuizawa. Understanding the struggles she faced due to bullying in middle school, he agreed to enter a relationship with her as a façade to protect her from harassment. After learning about her traumatic past, he empathized with her fear of experiencing the same abuse in high school and allowed her to use his reputation as a shield against potential bullies.

Hirata frequently demonstrates thoughtfulness and a strong sense of justice. For example, he defended Kiyotaka Ayanokōji when Karuizawa’s underwear was found in his possession, believing his claim of innocence despite having no evidence to support it. His leadership skills and ability to mediate disputes were particularly evident during the special survival exam, where he successfully got his classmates to agree on a consensus after a heated debate over supplies and class points.

Despite his many admirable qualities, Hirata struggles with pressure and stress, as seen when he became overwhelmed after their survival book was burned, unable to process what had happened until Kiyotaka reminded him that his class was depending on him for guidance. His naivety is another notable flaw, as demonstrated when he continued to defend Haruki Yamauchi despite clear evidence of his betrayal in attempting to have Kiyotaka expelled. He also failed to recognize his own influence within the class, making impulsive decisions such as offering himself up for expulsion instead of Yamauchi, despite being far more valuable to the class. Additionally, he has openly disagreed with his classmates on multiple occasions, and when the burden of responsibility became too much, he lashed out, showing visible frustration and dissatisfaction. At one point, Kiyotaka bluntly pointed out his failures and called out his tendency to avoid confrontation, forcing Hirata to acknowledge his mistakes and reassess his approach.

In the light novels and anime flashbacks, it is revealed that his personality stems from deep-seated guilt over abandoning a childhood friend who suffered from severe bullying. This experience shaped his belief in resolving conflicts through non-violent means, even when it may not be the most effective solution. Despite his desire to help others, he knows when to set boundaries, as seen in his relationship with Kei. Hirata also tends to avoid direct confrontations whenever possible, opting for peaceful resolutions over aggression. Additionally, he is highly perceptive, gradually realizing that Kiyotaka not Suzune Horikita was the true mastermind behind Class 1-D’s successes.

Hirata has shown little to no interest in romance, stating that he does not believe this will change even as he progresses through life. He expressed this belief to Kiyotaka, implying that he sees relationships as unnecessary distractions rather than a personal pursuit.

Abilities

Physical Abilities
Yōsuke has not been shown to possess notable physical strength or brute force, but he is highly active and athletic. He has mentioned that he plays a variety of sports and even attempted to join the school soccer club, suggesting that he has a well-rounded level of physical fitness. However, his primary strengths lie outside of direct combat or physical confrontations.

Academic Abilities
Yōsuke has demonstrated exceptional academic performance, with grades that would have qualified him for one of the upper classes. Despite his strong academic abilities, unknown factors led to his placement in Class D. His intelligence and problem-solving skills are evident throughout the series, particularly in situations requiring strategic thinking and negotiation.

Intellectual Abilities
As one of Class 1-D’s central figures and class representative, Yōsuke possesses strong leadership skills and a natural ability to guide and unite his classmates. His talent for leadership was particularly highlighted during the special island survival test, where he helped organize and implement strategies to maximize his class’s points. However, despite his best efforts, Class D was ultimately outperformed by the other classes, revealing the limits of his strategic abilities. Their loss would have been even more severe had it not been for Kiyotaka Ayanokōji’s intervention, demonstrating that while Yōsuke is competent, his abilities are not infallible.

While Yōsuke is usually composed, he has shown a tendency to crack under pressure when faced with unexpected setbacks. However, he is capable of quickly regaining his composure when reassured by others. This trait highlights both his strength as a leader and his personal struggles with self-doubt, making him a complex and dynamic character within Class D.
