Yashiro Nene

Yashiro Nene (八尋 寧々, Yashiro Nene) is a first-year student at Kamome Gakuen’s High School Division and serves as the assistant to Hanako, the supernatural entity residing in the school’s third-floor girls’ bathroom. After forming a contract with Hanako, she becomes intricately involved with the mysteries surrounding the Seven Wonders of Kamome Gakuen.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Nene is an outgoing and earnest individual who seeks the approval of her peers. She is generally kind and compassionate, sometimes to the point of naivety, as she earnestly wishes to help those around her even at the risk of associating with dangerous supernatural beings. Due to her frequent reliance on Hanako for protection against hostile spirits, she has developed a habit of calling his name in times of distress. However, she aspires to become strong enough to protect Hanako and her other friends in return.

Despite her cheerful demeanor, Nene harbors deep insecurities, particularly regarding her ankles and concerns about whether people genuinely like her. She is a hopeless romantic who easily falls for attractive individuals, often making impulsive decisions in her pursuit of love. Her strong desire for a boyfriend has led her to desperate measures, such as summoning Hanako to grant her wish and recklessly using a matchmaking supernatural item without fully understanding its consequences. In the past, after discovering that a crush preferred traditionally “feminine” traits, she worked hard to improve her cooking, sewing, and gardening skills in an attempt to impress him. However, her experiences with unrequited love have made her fearful of heartbreak, leaving her self-conscious about her femininity.

During the search for a Clock Keeper, Hanako temporarily possesses Nene’s body, causing her to exhibit his mischievous personality. Under Hanako’s influence, Nene becomes noticeably bolder and even attempts to flirt with Akane Aoi, much to her own embarrassment when she later regains control.

Appearance

Nene is a young girl with large magenta eyes featuring orange accents. Her waist-length hair is a light cream color that gradually fades into a soft teal green at the tips. She has short baby bangs framing her forehead and typically wears two dark brown magatama hair accessories resembling small horns, which pull back parts of her hair. She occasionally styles her hair in different ways, including braids, ponytails, and twin tails.

Her unique hair color aligns with her well-known nickname, “radish,” a reference to her thick ankles, which are noticeably drawn larger than those of other characters in the series.

Nene’s Kamome Gakuen uniform consists of a cream-colored sailor dress that reaches her knees, featuring a scalloped hemline. The skirt’s lining is deep magenta, while her collar, cuffs, and pockets are brown with cream detailing. Her collar bow matches the color of her dress, adorned with brown stripes, and she wears a personal skull-shaped brooch above it. Nene pairs the standard cream-and-orange uwabaki slippers with dark brown tights, which have a small half-moon pattern near the ankles, instead of the usual brown knee-length stockings.

Due to a curse caused by ingesting mermaid scales, Nene transforms into a betta fish whenever she comes into contact with water. In this form, she has deep, round eyes and light pink scales that transition into teal on her tail and fins. Her magatama accessories are mirrored by two small brown horns, and she retains her ribbon with the skull brooch. Her fish form is noted for its beauty, particularly by the Mermaid Servants.

Even when she is not fully transformed, exposure to water causes pink fish scales to appear on her skin. These scales disappear once she is dried.

During the Tanabata festival with the supernaturals, Nene wears her hair up and dresses in a white yukata adorned with large red floral patterns, tied with a red obi. To blend in and avoid trouble among the supernatural beings at the festival, she wears a white cloth (hitaikakushi) over her head, which was provided by Hanako as a disguise.

Nene was used as a substitute for the sacrificial ritual in Sumire’s village, wearing a pink variation of Aoi’s kannagi attire. This outfit shares similar design details with Aoi’s but features a lighter pink coat and a pink hakama. She also wears two dark pink flowers in her hair.

In a school orientation flashback, Nene is depicted with shoulder-length hair, appearing shorter than in the main storyline. Kamome Gakuen’s middle school uniform differs slightly from the high school version, featuring longer sleeves, a darker base color, and knee-high socks paired with leather shoes.

When possessed by Hanako, Nene’s appearance remains largely unchanged. However, her eyes take on a sharper shape, resembling Hanako’s own, and her hair appears straighter than usual. Meanwhile, her soul, temporarily separated from her body, takes on the form of a ghost.

In a dream sequence, Nene finds herself transformed into a Mokke, a small, rabbit-like supernatural creature. Despite this transformation, she retains her magatama accessories and skull brooch. The other Mokke accept her as one of their own without hesitation.

After being bitten by one of the Owl Guardians, Nene loses a portion of her lifespan and reverts to her middle school self. Later, after sustaining multiple pecks from other Owl Guardians, she undergoes further regression, ultimately reverting to her toddler form before being saved by Yugi Tsukasa.

Background

Before meeting Hanako, Nene was an ordinary first-year high school student at Kamome Academy, struggling with unrequited crushes and insecurities about her appearance. She summoned Hanako-san of the Toilet after hearing the urban legend that he grants wishes, hoping to win the love of her crush. However, things did not go as planned, and instead of receiving a love spell, she ended up forming a contract with Hanako, binding her as his assistant.

This unexpected turn of events thrusts her into the world of supernatural mysteries, where she becomes involved in Hanako’s duties as School Mystery Number 7. Through their experiences together, Nene learns more about Hanako’s past, the secrets of Kamome Academy, and the dangers of the supernatural world.

Abilities and Powers

Perception of Supernaturals
Nene possesses the ability to see supernatural beings, such as Hanako, without any prior connection to them. It is later revealed that this ability stems from her proximity to the Far Shore, as she has only about a year remaining in her lifespan.

Transformation
After ingesting a mermaid scale, Nene’s body undergoes a partial transformation, causing fish-like scales to appear on her skin whenever she comes into contact with water. If fully submerged, she transforms into a betta fish. However, due to her contract with Hanako, she is able to maintain her human form while outside of water. Occasionally, her scales shed naturally and can be used as a rare form of currency in the supernatural world.

Manipulation of Rumors
Nene has demonstrated the ability to alter the rumors surrounding the supernatural entities of Kamome Gakuen. She has successfully changed the rumors regarding the Kodama tree, Yako, and the Mokke. This ability may be linked to her status as a kannagi (a shrine maiden) or her association with one of the Seven Mysteries.

Legacy

Yashiro Nene is the heart and soul of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. As a relatable and endearing protagonist, she navigates the balance between the human and supernatural worlds, proving that kindness and determination can overcome even the darkest curses. Her deepening relationship with Hanako adds layers of romance, mystery, and bittersweet emotion, making her one of the most beloved characters in the series.
