Yako

Yako (ヤコ) is a supernatural entity haunting a set of stairs at Kamome Academy. She serves as the current representative of the 2nd School Mystery, known as The Misaki Stairs. As a powerful supernatural, Yako is deeply connected to the school’s urban legends, playing a key role in the supernatural hierarchy that governs Kamome Academy.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Yako is a prideful and aloof supernatural who holds little regard for humans, with the sole exception of her beloved, deceased Misaki. Her devotion to Misaki is obsessive, leading her to do anything to bring him back. Due to her lack of understanding of human anatomy, she enlisted students to rebuild Misaki’s body, discarding them without hesitation if she deemed their efforts inadequate.

Later, Yako admits that even when her rumor was altered by Yugi Tsukasa, she retained full control over her actions. She describes this experience as a suppressed side of herself being forcibly brought to the surface, rather than acting against her will.

She has a strong preference for respect, insisting that others call her by her name rather than “Kitsune” (Fox). In moments of vulnerability or frustration, she reacts aggressively, either biting or verbally berating those around her. However, beneath her prideful exterior, she does have a softer side. This is evident when she comforts Kou after the incident with his friend and even allows him to call her “Nee-san” (big sister), showing a degree of warmth toward those she considers close.

Despite her lofty ego, Yako is sometimes reluctant to lend her powers, only agreeing to help when Hanako threatened her with a knife and the promise of “Kitsune Udon” a clear weakness for the fox spirit, as the dish is named after her kind.

Appearance

Yako initially appears as a tall and elegant woman with long, beige hair, which is braided and tied on one side of her head. She wears a red and white ribbon adorned with small bells, resembling fox ears. Her bright green eyes add to her striking appearance.

She is dressed in a dark red kimono with a floral pattern, paired with a white haori, white gloves, and white socks. She also wears brown geta sandals with red straps and a lime green obi around her waist. Her appearance exudes grace and refinement, and she is noted to be very beautiful by Nene.

In her true form, Yako transforms into a small white fox with a red bib tied around her neck. She still retains bell earrings, similar to the ones on her ribbon in human form. In the past, she was an Inari statue placed at a temple gate, likely near Misaki’s schoolhouse, indicating that she was once a revered guardian spirit before becoming a supernatural entity.

Background

Yako’s origin is deeply tied to the legend of the Misaki Stairs, which tells of a teacher named Misaki who met a tragic fate. As the guardian of the stairs, Yako has existed for generations, ensuring that the legend remains alive.

Her original connection to Misaki is deeply personal, as she saw the teacher as a master or caretaker. However, when the true history of Misaki was erased and rewritten, Yako became consumed by grief and resentment, lashing out at those who disrespected the legend.

Her anger and sorrow led to her becoming a vengeful supernatural, enforcing the curse of the Misaki Stairs where students who step on the wrong stair are doomed to be mutilated.

After her confrontation with Hanako, Yako’s rage is subdued, and she begins to accept her new existence, no longer acting purely out of vengeance.

Abilities

Transformation
Yako possesses the ability to shapeshift between her human and fox forms at will. However, her true form is that of a small white fox, which she assumes when outside her boundary. Within her own domain, she maintains her human appearance, reinforcing her status as the guardian of the Misaki Stairs.

Number 2’s Powers
As the representative of the 2nd School Mystery, Yako has complete control over the Misaki Stairs, her supernatural boundary. This domain can be accessed by stepping on the fourth step of the stairs, triggering a connection to her territory and its supernatural influence.

  • Control over “Space” – As the guardian of the concept of space within Kamome Academy, Yako can manipulate spatial dimensions within her boundary. She has the ability to transport herself and others to any location inside her domain at will.
    • Puppeting – Yako can briefly animate lifeless objects, as seen when Hanako and Nene presented her with a disfigured human doll. She was able to breathe temporary life into it, allowing it to move for a short period before it ultimately collapsed.
      • Her powers over space and animation make her a formidable supernatural, capable of warping reality within her boundary and interacting with supernatural entities in ways beyond human comprehension.

        Legacy

Yako is a tragic yet complex character, embodying the pain of loss and the struggle to preserve forgotten memories. As a supernatural being, she began as a vengeful entity but gradually evolved into a more neutral force within Kamome Academy’s supernatural realm.

Though she still harbors resentment, she is no longer solely driven by revenge, making her a character with deep emotional layers and potential for further growth.

        Trivia

          • Yako’s favorite snack is a sweet-bean jelly sandwich.
            • Her latest concern is that grooming herself is very difficult, likely due to maintaining both her human and fox forms.
            • In Afterschool Boy Hanako-kun, she develops a crush on Nene’s homeroom teacher, Nagisa, who bears a strong resemblance to Misaki, the person she once loved.
            • In the pilot chapters, Yako’s fox form underwent slight design changes, particularly in Chapters 2 and 3. By Chapter 3, her facial features closely resembled her appearance in the serialized version of the series.
            • Her name, “Yako,” is likely inspired by Yako/Nogitsune, a type of fox yokai in Japanese folklore, known for being mischievous and sometimes malevolent.
            • Yako is easily startled by lightning and will immediately flee to the wild to seek refuge when she hears it.
            • She does not find snowy weather special and remains indifferent to it.
            • Yako has a strong enjoyment for hunting the Mokke; her favorite festival stall is a Mokke-hunting game, which she finds particularly entertaining.
