Uzu Sanageyama

Uzu Sanageyama (猿投山 渦, Sanageyama Uzu) is a major character in Kill la Kill and one of the Student Council’s Elite Four at Honnōji Academy. Serving under Satsuki Kiryūin, he oversees the academy’s athletic clubs, including the boxing and tennis clubs. Known for his brash personality and martial prowess, Sanageyama is a devoted follower of Satsuki and wields the power of his Three-Star Goku Uniform in battle.

Things like behind and front are all the same to me now. And now that I don’t use my eyes, I can sense the world in 360. So, I just wanted thank you for giving me a second chance… and a fresh start.

Appearance in Anime

Uzu Sanageyama is a tall and athletic teenager with mid-length dark green hair and gray eyes. His standard attire is a customized Three-Star Goku Uniform designed as a long white coat with a high collar, a built-in sword sheath on the back, and three spikes on each shoulder. The coat is typically left open, revealing a cadet-blue vest underneath. He also wears matching white pants and shoes, along with a belt featuring three prominent metal spikes at the front.

Following the loss of his sight, Uzu has his eyes sewn shut and adopts a long green bandanna marked with two stars at the temples and stylized white lines where his eyes should be. The bandanna often shifts humorously, opening or narrowing to reflect his expressions. After upgrading to the Blade Regalia Mk.III, his bandanna becomes golden, while following its destruction and his alignment with Nudist Beach, he switches to a black bandanna. Upon regaining his eyesight with the Supreme War Regalia, he continues to wear a bandanna, though positioned across his forehead rather than over his eyes.

Personality

At the outset of the series, Uzu Sanageyama is portrayed as cocky, confident, and eager to challenge strong opponents, displaying an almost reckless enthusiasm for combat. His arrogance, however, is shattered following his decisive defeat at the hands of Ryūko Matoi. Humbled by the experience, Uzu undergoes significant personal growth, shedding his earlier laid-back attitude in favor of discipline and determination. In pursuit of strength, he makes the extreme decision to have his eyes sewn shut, believing his dependence on sight to be his greatest weakness. This act of self-sacrifice allows him to refine his abilities, ultimately enabling him to stand on equal footing with Ryūko in later battles.

As the overseer of Honnōji Academy’s athletic clubs, Uzu maintains strict standards for their presidents and expresses frustration when they fall short. Despite his competitive and stern demeanor, he demonstrates a strong sense of duty and loyalty. He takes responsibility for protecting students and their families during the COVERS incident at the Great Culture and Sport Festival, mourning the lives lost in the attack. His softer side is also revealed in moments of grief, such as his visible distress at Ira Gamagōri’s apparent death during the climactic battle against Ragyō Kiryūin.

History

Three years prior to enrolling at Honnōji Academy, Uzu Sanageyama served as the Northern Kanto Gang Leader Alliance Representative, commanding a force of 500 middle school delinquents. When Satsuki Kiryūin challenged the gang, she defeated all 500 members with nothing but her sheer fighting spirit. Refusing to yield, Sanageyama confronted her directly, relying on his Tengantsu, a technique that allowed him to predict movements with heightened vision to evade her attacks. Confident that he had outmaneuvered her, he attempted to strike from behind, only for Satsuki to expose his overreliance on sight. With a single backward thrust of her sword, she defeated him.

Despite his loss, Satsuki recognized Sanageyama’s potential and offered him a place at Honnōji Academy, describing it as the ultimate stage upon which he could hone his strength. He accepted her invitation and eventually became the last of the Elite Four to join her side.

Powers and Abilities

Natural Abilities

Expert Swordsman
Sanageyama is highly skilled in swordsmanship, specializing in the kendō style. He is rarely seen without a shinai (a wooden sword used in kendō practice), which he wields with impressive precision and speed. His reflexes and honed senses make him a formidable fighter, capable of both single- and dual-wielding techniques, as well as adapting to different types of blades. Although not on the same level as Satsuki Kiryūin, Sanageyama’s skill improves to the point where he can battle evenly against opponents as powerful as Nui Harime, even without the aid of his Goku Uniform.

Enhanced Perception
Through intense self-discipline, Sanageyama drastically sharpened his senses. Believing that reliance on vision was a weakness, he had his eyes sewn shut, forcing himself to fight without sight. This training awakened his Mind’s Eye, granting him the ability to build a three-dimensional awareness of his surroundings. This state allowed him to rely on intuition and sensory cues rather than sight, creating a heightened situational awareness. Later, during the final battles, he chose to remove this restriction while wearing the Blade Regalia Mk.III, combining both natural vision and his developed perception.

Higi: Tengantsu (秘技・天眼通, Secret Technique: Clairvoyance)
A specialized technique that allows Sanageyama to predict an opponent’s actions based on minute preparatory movements, such as eye shifts, muscle twitches, or changes in posture. This ability is further enhanced when combined with his Goku Uniform, which activates multiple artificial eyes to increase accuracy. The anime highlights his ability to read movements across specific muscle groups, including the eyes (orbicularis oculi), hands (dorsal interosseous/adductor pollicis), chest (pectoralis major), and even the gluteus maximus.

Shingantsu (心眼通, Authority of the Mind’s Eye)
By sacrificing his sight, Sanageyama unlocked a higher level of perception, allowing him to “see” the world through his heightened senses. This ability lets him anticipate attacks and movements with greater accuracy than he could have achieved with normal vision. He claims that this state allows him to perceive the entire world around him. However, the technique has notable drawbacks: it cannot read digital projections such as screens, and his over-sharpened senses can backfire, such as when he admits that drinking hot tea burns his tongue.

Relationships

Satsuki Kiryūin
Sanageyama first encountered Satsuki during his third year of middle school as the Northern Kanto Gang Leader Alliance Representative. After being decisively defeated, he recognized her overwhelming strength and vision. Accepting her invitation, he pledged himself to her cause, becoming the last member of the Elite Four to join Honnōji Academy. From that point onward, Sanageyama devoted himself to serving her and realizing his full potential under her leadership.

Ryūko Matoi
Sanageyama initially saw Ryūko as a rival after she repeatedly defeated the athletic clubs under his supervision. Confident in his Tengantsu ability, he became the first of the Elite Four to openly challenge her. However, Ryūko outmaneuvered him, stripping him of his reliance on Tengantsu and leaving him humiliated. Determined to overcome his weakness, Sanageyama sewed his eyes shut to train his Mind’s Eye, later confronting Ryūko a second time. Despite pushing her to the brink, his uniform overheated before he could finish the fight, forcing him to withdraw. While ashamed, he came to respect Ryūko deeply, later referring to her as “the woman who took his eyes (Tengantsu) and gave him the world (Shingantsu).”

Shirō Iori
Iori, the creator of Honnōji Academy’s uniforms, is responsible for designing Sanageyama’s Three-Star Goku Uniform, the Blade Regalia, and its subsequent iterations (Mk.II and Mk.III). When Sanageyama decided to sew his eyes shut to strengthen himself, he entrusted this procedure to Iori, not as an order, but as a personal request, indicating the respect and trust between them.

Omiko Hakodate
As head of the Tennis Club, Omiko operated under Sanageyama’s oversight in the athletic division. Their relationship is largely professional, with Sanageyama acting as her superior within the academy’s hierarchy.

Trivia

    • Sanageyama’s development of Shingantsu parallels the origins of Marvel Comics’ character Daredevil, who also lost his vision but gained enhanced perception and heightened senses.
    • His self-inflicted blindness in order to better serve Satsuki Kiryūin draws comparisons to the Shinto storm god Susano’o, a swordsman who was cast from Heaven to live in darkness.
    • In Episode 6, during the transformation sequence of his Blade Regalia Mk.I, the animation mistakenly shows parts of the Blade Regalia Mk.II (the head and leg) before displaying the complete Mk.I uniform.
    • The kanji in his name carries symbolic meaning: Saru (猿) means “monkey,” reflecting his animal motif, while Sanageyama can be interpreted as “throwing mountain vortex,” aligning with his energetic and aggressive fighting style.
