Appearance in Anime

Horohoro is a tall and athletic young man with distinctive features that highlight his Ainu heritage. His most recognizable outfit is a white and blue skiing ensemble, paired with black shorts and sturdy skiing shoes that are designed to attach to his snowboard. His long, silvery-blue hair is typically styled in spikes, held together by a headband adorned with traditional Ainu patterns.

In casual settings, Horohoro opts for simple attire, such as a plain white shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes. He is often seen with a towel tied as a headband and carries his snowboard along with his personal belongings in a bag slung over his back.

When adopting his new medium, Horohoro dons a battle outfit crafted by his sister, Usui Pirica. This ensemble includes a black headband, vest, shorts, gloves, and boots, all accented with blue lining and red Ainu-inspired markings. He also wears an open, sleeveless jacket featuring Ainu-style patterns, tied with a white sash. The markings on his headband and boots, called “Morew-siriki” and “Ay-us-siriki,” are traditional Ainu symbols used in hunting, symbolizing his cultural heritage and determination.

Personality

Horohoro is a good-natured and cheerful individual who exhibits a carefree demeanor most of the time but becomes serious when faced with dangerous or high-stakes situations. He frequently engages in arguments with his teammate Tao Ren, with whom he shares a competitive and combative dynamic. Despite their apparent friction, Horohoro demonstrates genuine care for Ren, as seen when he implores Yoh to save him, vowing never to forgive Yoh if he failed. Horohoro is also highly secretive about his past and reacts defensively when others pry into it, becoming visibly enraged when Kalim addresses him by his birth name. His competitive nature is sometimes intense, as shown when he aggressively turned Ryu’s arms to ice and shattered them during the match between Team “The Ren” and Team “Funbari Onsen.” Opacho, after reading his mind, aptly described him as resembling a wolf.

From a young age, Horohoro was instilled with a deep respect and admiration for nature, which aligns with his Ainu heritage. He takes pride in his cultural roots and is committed to protecting living beings and the natural world, once going as far as saving a national park to uphold his values. He is a responsible person, capable of taking care of himself and his sister, Usui Pirica. Horohoro also has a playful and romantic side, as evidenced by his frequent blushing and calling out “Maiden-chan” whenever Iron Maiden Jeanne appears, signaling a crush on her.

Horohoro is a sensitive and emotionally reactive individual whose moods shift quickly, making him easily provoked. However, he shows significant growth and maturity over time. By the final stages of the Shaman Fight, he evolves into a serious and focused fighter, showcasing a sharp and determined demeanor during battles. Outside of combat, his lighthearted and jovial nature reemerges, maintaining his role as a source of energy and humor among his friends.

History

Horohoro was born on November 27, 1985, in Hokkaidō, Japan. As a member of the Ainu Tribe, he was chosen to represent his community in the Shaman Fight to save their village. Horohoro’s dream was to plant a vast field of butterbur for the koropokkuru, a goal instilled in him alongside the belief that the strong prey on the weak. During his childhood, a girl named Kurobe Tamiko, nicknamed Damuko, moved to his small village. As her family was building a dam that threatened the area, she was shunned by the community. Loneliness brought Horohoro and Damuko together, and she even gave him his nickname. However, the Ainu Elder forbade their friendship, forcing Horohoro to stop talking to her. Tragically, Damuko followed him into the mountains one year later and succumbed to the elements, a loss that deeply scarred Horohoro, who blamed himself for her death. Later, Kororo became his Guardian Ghost, though he didn’t yet know she was Damuko reincarnated.

As the Shaman Fight began, Horohoro passed the Patch Officiant Kalim’s test, earning an Oracle Bell. His first match was against Yoh Asakura at the Sunshine 60 building in Ikebukuro. Though Horohoro fought valiantly, aiming to achieve his dream of creating butterbur fields, Yoh ultimately defeated him. Despite the loss, Horohoro showed camaraderie by attending the celebration party for Yoh and later competed successfully in other matches to qualify for the second round. When Tao Ren was captured by his father, Horohoro joined Yoh and their friends in a rescue mission. The group faced fierce opposition in the Tao compound, with Horohoro defeating several enemies before ultimately being knocked out. Following Ren’s victory over his father, the group prepared for the next rounds of the Shaman Fight. Horohoro received a prayer stick from his sister Pirica and developed a stronger resolve to fight for his goals.

During the journey to the Patch Village, Horohoro experienced the Seminoa Tribe’s tragic past and faced numerous challenges, including a fierce battle against Lyserg Diethel, who eventually joined their group. While exploring Route 66, Horohoro had a transformative encounter with Bluebell Bloch, a park ranger, after witnessing the tragic death of a bear named Apollo due to human negligence. This incident deepened Horohoro’s commitment to protecting nature and motivated him to approach the Shaman Fight with renewed focus.

In the second round of the Shaman Fight, Horohoro showcased his growth and determination. He developed powerful new techniques, including the Over Soul Nipopo Gauntlets, which he used to defeat Team Myo-oh. During the invasion of the Plants, Horohoro faced intense battles against the Patch Priests, including a pivotal fight with Kalim, which revealed Kororo’s true identity as Damuko. This revelation brought closure to Horohoro’s lingering guilt over her death. Despite suffering defeats, he played a crucial role in stalling enemies and supporting his team. When Hao became Shaman King and attempted to eliminate everyone, Horohoro, along with the Five Elemental Warriors, confronted him in the Great Spirit, ultimately witnessing Hao’s change of heart after an emotional reunion with his mother.

After the Shaman Fight, Horohoro attended an agricultural high school and managed a ranch in Hokkaidō. He pursued his dream of creating butterbur fields, conducting research to greenify environments and participating in Japan’s greening projects in African deserts. His efforts to stop illegal logging and mismanagement of resources earned him the title “Guardian of Water Sources.” However, his farm faced financial difficulties, leading him to market an unsuccessful product, “All-Natural Marimo Balls.” Seven years later, Horohoro reunited with his friends at Funbari Hill, where he reconnected with Yoh, Anna, and the group. During the reunion, he deduced that Tao Men’s mother was Jeanne, and later, he drunkenly lay at the table as Anna revealed the need to prepare for the next Shaman Fight in 500 years.

Powers and Abilities

Horohoro is a resourceful and skilled individual, capable of crafting practical tools such as a wooden snowboard adorned with Ainu symbols. He also creates small trinkets for sale, which he uses to sustain himself. Despite his ingenuity, Horohoro openly admits to struggling academically, once scoring a mere 25 percent on a math test. However, his real talents shine in battle, where he demonstrates exceptional control over the element of ice. Horohoro uses ice both offensively, forming projectiles, and defensively, creating large barriers to shield himself from attacks. Inspired by Mikihisa and Ren, he masters the Fumon Tonkō technique, allowing him to read the flow of Furyoku and effectively dodge enemy attacks. During the Shaman Fight, he attunes his Furyoku to the element of ice, further enhancing his abilities. When Kyōyama Anna examined his Furyoku levels, it was revealed to be approximately 120,000.

Horohoro’s Guardian Ghost is Kororo, a small nature spirit who later turns out to be his childhood friend, Kurobe Tamiko. Kororo serves as the medium for his Over Souls. In his initial Over Soul, Horohoro channels Kororo into his snowboard, which he uses either as a swift mode of attack or as a melee weapon when attached to his arm. As he progresses, he evolves his Over Soul by channeling Kororo into an Ikupasuy given to him by his sister Pirica. This Over Soul forms a large owl face around his hand, significantly enhancing the speed and intensity at which he can freeze his surroundings. Horohoro later develops an armor Over Soul known as the Nipopo Gauntlets, taught to him by Pascual Abaj. This advanced Over Soul manipulates moisture in the air with such precision that it can flash-freeze opponents, causing their limbs or entire bodies to shatter instantly. As one of the Five Elemental Warriors selected by Gandhara, Horohoro gains the Spirit of Rain, which, according to Pascual, can generate an infinite amount of holy water, further amplifying his abilities.
