Twelve

Twelve (ツエルブ, Tuerubu), is one of the two main protagonists of Terror in Resonance (Zankyou no Terror). He is the energetic and playful counterpart to his more serious partner, Nine, forming the terrorist duo known as Sphinx. Behind his cheerful and carefree facade, Twelve harbors a traumatic past, having endured the same inhumane experiments as Nine in the Settlement (Project Athena). Despite his dark past, he remains the most outwardly expressive of the two, often acting as a charming trickster with a keen sense of perception.

Unlike Nine, who is driven purely by logic and revenge, Twelve is more empathetic, allowing himself to connect emotionally with Lisa Mishima, a lonely girl whom he takes under his protection. His inner conflict between loyalty to Nine and his growing attachment to Lisa plays a crucial role in the unfolding story.

Background

Appearance in anime

Twelve, like Nine, was a victim of Project Athena, a government-sponsored experiment designed to create child prodigies with enhanced intelligence. The children subjected to these experiments were stripped of their individuality, heavily monitored, and forced into a cruel system of psychological and physical conditioning.

Twelve’s naturally high adaptability and quick reflexes made him one of the most physically capable subjects. However, despite his ability to endure, he witnessed many of his fellow children die from the experiments, leaving him with deep-seated trauma masked by his seemingly carefree personality.

Alongside Nine, he escaped the Settlement, faking their deaths to flee from the facility. They spent the next several years in hiding, preparing for their revenge against the system that stole their childhoods. Their plan took form in the creation of Sphinx, a terrorist group meant to uncover the truth about Project Athena and expose the government’s crimes.

Appearance

Twelve is a slim and athletic young man with messy platinum blonde hair and bright golden eyes, a stark contrast to Nine’s dark hair and cold gray eyes. His boyish and mischievous demeanor gives him a disarming appearance, often making him seem more like an ordinary high school student rather than a skilled terrorist.

He often dresses in casual, light-colored clothing, reinforcing his cheerful persona. His innocent and carefree expressions frequently mask his true emotions, making it difficult for others to see through his facade. However, when serious or in distress, his eyes hold a haunted intensity, revealing the lingering trauma of his past.

Personality

Twelve is playful, mischievous, and incredibly perceptive. He often teases others, particularly Nine, and has a charismatic, almost childlike energy that makes him instantly likable. However, despite his cheerful attitude, Twelve is not naïve he is highly intelligent, observant, and dangerously skilled in combat, driving, and deception.

Beneath his lighthearted exterior, Twelve hides deep emotional wounds from his past. While Nine buries his trauma under cold logic, Twelve masks his pain with humor and playfulness. He is deeply loyal to Nine, but he also has a strong sense of empathy, which causes internal conflict when he begins to form a bond with Lisa Mishima.

Unlike Nine, who sees Lisa as a liability, Twelve genuinely cares for her and wants to protect her from the loneliness he himself endured. His emotional openness becomes both his greatest strength and his biggest weakness, as his compassion ultimately puts him at odds with the mission of Sphinx.

Role in the Story

  • Terrorist Activities with Nine
Twelve is responsible for executing many of Sphinx’s bombings, often serving as the getaway driver and field operator. His high intelligence, quick reflexes, and adaptability make him a key player in carrying out their attacks, while Nine focuses on the strategic planning. In several instances, Twelve uses his charm and wit to manipulate situations, such as evading law enforcement, hacking security systems, and misleading authorities. His ability to remain calm under pressure makes him invaluable to the mission.

  • Relationship with Lisa Mishima
Twelve’s encounter with Lisa Mishima changes the course of his story. Lisa is a bullied and emotionally fragile girl, and while Nine wants nothing to do with her, Twelve immediately empathizes with her loneliness. He saves Lisa from attempting suicide, and despite the risks, he brings her into their hideout. Over time, he develops feelings for her, struggling between his loyalty to Nine and his desire to protect Lisa. His connection to Lisa marks the first time he acts on personal emotion rather than the mission, leading to tensions with Nine.

  • Conflict with Five
When Five, another survivor of the Settlement, enters the picture, she forces Twelve into a dangerous position. Unlike Nine, who is determined to outmatch Five intellectually, Twelve is psychologically affected by her presence, as she represents the horrors of their past. During one of Five’s dangerous cat-and-mouse games, she manipulates Twelve by forcing him to choose between Nine and Lisa. Fearing for Lisa’s life, Twelve betrays Nine, revealing his location to Five in exchange for Lisa’s safety. This fractures his bond with Nine, leading to one of the most emotionally charged moments in the series.

  • Tragic Resolution
As the series reaches its climax, Twelve attempts to reconcile with Nine, knowing that their mission is nearing its end. He fights alongside Nine to expose the truth about Project Athena, despite knowing that their time is running out. However, in a tragic turn of events, Twelve is suddenly shot and killed by U.S. government forces just moments after the truth is revealed. His death is abrupt and senseless, symbolizing how innocent victims of corruption and war are often discarded without a second thought. His final moments are spent smiling at Lisa, accepting his fate with the same warmth he always carried.

Relationships

Nine (Best Friend and Partner)
Nine and Twelve share a brother-like bond, having survived the horrors of the Settlement together. While Nine is calculating and logical, Twelve is free-spirited and impulsive, creating a perfect balance in their partnership. However, their relationship is strained when Twelve chooses to protect Lisa over their mission, leading to a heartbreaking conflict. Despite this, Nine ultimately forgives Twelve, understanding that his compassion was never a betrayal—just a sign of his humanity.

Lisa Mishima (Love Interest and Emotional Anchor)
Lisa is one of the only people Twelve truly opens up to. He sees himself in her loneliness and suffering, which drives his protective instincts. Though he flirts with her playfully at first, it becomes clear that his affection for her is genuine. Twelve’s desire to keep Lisa safe is one of the main reasons he begins to question Sphinx’s mission, showing that love and human connection can outweigh revenge.

Trivia

    • Twelve is an expert motorcyclist, often seen performing high-speed chases and evasive maneuvers.
      • His favorite number is 12, and it’s the name he chose for himself after escaping the Settlement.
      • He has a fear of water, likely due to childhood trauma from the experiments.
      • Despite his lightheartedness, he is one of the most skilled and dangerous members of Sphinx, capable of outmaneuvering police and military forces.

    Legacy

      • Twelve’s story is one of tragedy, love, and fleeting happiness. His compassion sets him apart from Nine, showing that even in a world filled with cruelty, there is still room for warmth and human connection. His sacrifice and kindness live on in Lisa and Nine, making him one of the most memorable and heartbreaking characters in Terror in Resonance.
