Did You Know?

Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Tsuchigomori

Tsuchigomori Ryūjirou (土籠 龍仁郎) is a science teacher at Kamome Academy, though he is secretly a Supernatural, serving as the representative and curator of the 5th School Mystery, the 4PM Bookstacks. While maintaining his human disguise, he oversees students and faculty alike, blending seamlessly into daily life. He is also Minamoto Kou’s current homeroom teacher, creating an interesting dynamic between his role as an educator and his existence as a supernatural being.

Appearance in Anime

Tsuchigomori is a tall and lanky man with spiky black hair, accented by long white fringes, and piercing purple eyes.

In his human disguise, he appears almost indistinguishable from a regular person, seamlessly blending into Kamome Academy as a science teacher. However, in his true supernatural form, his features become noticeably sharper and more monstrous. His ears elongate, his hands become claw-like, and he develops shark-like teeth, giving him a more menacing and inhuman appearance. Additionally, he has four extra limbs protruding from his lower back, further distinguishing him from humans.

His usual attire consists of a white lab coat worn over a purple sweater, paired with golden eyeglasses, which contribute to his scholarly and mysterious persona.

In 1969, Tsuchigomori’s hair was entirely black, and he did not wear glasses at the time. Instead of his usual sweater, he wore a dress shirt, giving him a more traditional and professional look during his earlier years.

In Houkago Shounen Hanako-kun Chapter 26, Tsuchigomori accidentally wore the Cursed Cat Ears, which temporarily transformed him into a cat for 12 hours.

Personality

While Tsuchigomori initially appears to be a normal, caring, and somewhat meek teacher in his human disguise, his true personality is sarcastic, mischievous, and short-tempered. He enjoys teasing others, often displaying a sadistic streak when threatening or scaring Nene and Kou though he immediately backs off when Hanako gives him a light warning.

He is also very private and dislikes people prying into his personal life. This is evident in Chapter 13, when Nene jokingly suggests that he might be attracted to men, prompting him to threaten her in response.

Despite his role as a teacher, Tsuchigomori openly dislikes children, often finding them noisy and annoying. His dark sense of humor leads him to make disturbing jokes, such as claiming he eats human children, though he seems to enjoy the terrified reactions he gets rather than genuinely meaning harm.

Although he claims that his concern for his students is just an act, he has been shown to genuinely care about them on multiple occasions, proving that his teacher persona isn’t entirely false.

When asked why his teacher persona differs so drastically from his actual personality as a supernatural, he simply responds that he does it because he feels like it, suggesting that he enjoys the contrast and the amusement it brings.

Background

As the supernatural guardian of the 4PM Bookstacks, Tsuchigomori’s role is to collect and maintain records of every student’s past at Kamome Academy. These records hold the memories of those who have attended the school, making him a keeper of history and knowledge.

In the past, he was close to Amane Yugi (Hanako) when he was still alive, serving as his homeroom teacher. Despite knowing Amane’s tragic situation, Tsuchigomori chose not to intervene, a decision that continues to haunt him.

Over time, he has become more reclusive and emotionally guarded, preferring to maintain a distance from others, though his continued presence in the school as a teacher suggests a lingering attachment to humanity.

Abilities

Overall Abilities
As the curator of the 4PM Bookstacks, Tsuchigomori has access to an extensive collection of knowledge, encompassing the entire history of Kamome Academy, including its past, present, and future. He possesses detailed information on every student who has ever attended the school, allowing him insight into their fates and personal histories.

Even after his yorishiro and boundary were destroyed, Tsuchigomori retains the ability to retrieve books from the supernatural library, implying that his knowledge-based powers are deeply ingrained in his existence rather than solely dependent on his boundary.

He also reveals that, due to his position as curator, he technically has the ability to alter the future. However, he refuses to do so, explaining that any curator who manipulates the future will be erased from existence, making such an act an irreversible and fatal mistake.

Legacy

Tsuchigomori is a complex and morally gray character, torn between his supernatural responsibilities and his human emotions. His connection to Hanako’s past makes him one of the most significant adult figures in the series, and his reluctant mentorship of Kou hints at his ongoing internal struggle.

While he claims to be indifferent, his actions suggest that he still holds onto a sense of duty and care, making him a layered and intriguing supernatural presence at Kamome Academy.
