Reita Toritsuka (鳥束 零太, Toritsuka Reita) is a character in the anime and manga series The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. He is a self-proclaimed spirit medium and the second psychic to be introduced in the series. Reita transfers into Class 2- at PK Academy, where he becomes involved with Kusuo Saiki and his circle of acquaintances. While he possesses genuine spiritual abilities, his motivations and behavior often clash with Saiki’s reserved and pragmatic nature.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Reita Toritsuka is portrayed as a lecherous and attention-seeking individual whose primary motivations often revolve around gaining the affection of girls. He frequently oversexualizes women, engages in stalking behavior, and uses his psychic abilities for self-serving and inappropriate purposes such as asking spirits to spy on girls or reveal private details like their underwear color. His fixation on romantic and sexual pursuits often puts him at odds with Kusuo Saiki and the other characters.
Despite his perverted tendencies, Reita is open about his flaws and occasionally demonstrates a surprising degree of honesty. He openly admits to Kusuo that his envy of Saiki’s abilities stems from selfish desires, particularly Saiki’s power to see through objects. Nevertheless, he makes repeated efforts to befriend Saiki, even though his advances are often ignored or rejected.
Reita is also shown to be loyal and well-meaning in his own way. While he generally tries to follow instructions when helping others, he often misinterprets tasks or causes unintended complications. His behavior, while morally questionable, is often played for comedic effect, and his interactions with ghosts and demons further highlight his unique role in the series’ supernatural landscape.
Appearance
Reita Toritsuka is typically seen wearing a white headband and has medium-length, spiky violet hair that extends past his collar. His school uniform at PK Academy is worn in a relaxed, informal style he often exposes a dark blue T-shirt beneath his jacket and rolls up the legs of his uniform pants, similar to classmates Shun Kaidou and Riki Nendou.
As the son of a monk, Reita incorporates traditional elements into his attire by wearing Buddhist prayer beads around his neck and on his right wrist. On days off, he occasionally wears a samue (a traditional outfit worn by monks) while at the temple, or opts for a more casual look with a polo shirt layered over a T-shirt.
Abilities
As a spirit medium, Reita Toritsuka possesses several supernatural abilities, primarily revolving around his connection to the spiritual world. Unlike Kusuo Saiki, whose powers are vast and wide-ranging, Reita’s abilities are more focused and come with significant limitations.
Mediumship
Reita can see and communicate with spirits, including ghosts and guardian spirits attached to living individuals. This core ability defines his role as a psychic medium and is the basis for most of his spiritual interactions.
Demonic Possession / Devil Possessor
When attacked while possessed by a spirit, Reita can displace his own soul into another body, temporarily taking it over. His original body remains inhabited by the spirit during this time, preventing him from dying while outside it.
Summoning
Reita can channel a spirit’s abilities by allowing it to possess his body. This enables him to replicate the spirit’s skills. However, a major drawback is that certain spirits may attempt to permanently seize control of his body, resulting in chaotic or dangerous outcomes.
Unique Sight
In addition to perceiving ghosts, Reita can see otherwise invisible entities or forces, enhancing his utility as a medium.
Weaknesses
No Exorcism Ability
Reita lacks the power to exorcise or control spirits. While he can communicate and interact with them, he is vulnerable to stronger or hostile entities.
Susceptibility to Possession
His body can be overtaken by aggressive or obsessed spirits, especially if he overuses his summoning abilities.
Relationships
Kusuo Saiki
Reita is the first person outside of Kusuo’s family to discover his identity as an esper, learning about his powers through a spirit who witnessed Kusuo using them. Ironically, Reita is also the reason Kusuo develops the ability to see ghosts, as Kusuo creates the ability out of necessity to deal with Reita’s constant interference. Kusuo ranks Reita as his most disliked person and often mocks or manipulates him for example, pairing him with Chiyo Yumehara during a test of courage despite Reita’s desire to be with Arisu. Notably, Reita develops a crush on Kusuo’s female form, unaware of the truth at first.
Chiyo Yumehara
Initially, Reita tries to flirt with Chiyo like he does with many other girls, only to be promptly rejected. However, they eventually bond over their shared romantic ambitions both attempting to win the affections of their respective crushes. This leads to a collaboration where they plan a test of courage together, though it is ultimately foiled by Kusuo. Both are also members of PK Academy’s Occult Club.
Aiura Mikoto
Reita is instantly smitten with Mikoto upon meeting her, but quickly loses interest after she insults him. The two frequently clash, especially after realizing they both possess psychic powers and are aware of Kusuo’s abilities. Their rivalry escalates as they compete to become Kusuo’s “sidekick,” often resulting in comedic and chaotic consequences.
Riki Nendou
Reita initially struggles to interact with Nendou, mistakenly believing Nendou himself is a guardian spirit. It is later revealed that Nendou’s deceased father is the actual spirit attached to him. Despite this rocky start, the misunderstanding highlights Reita’s limited understanding of his spiritual abilities and serves as a humorous element in their dynamic.
