Docy turns out that context is a key part of learning.

Toritsuka Reita

Reita Toritsuka (鳥束 零太, Toritsuka Reita), is the second psychic introduced in Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.). Unlike Kusuo Saiki, who possesses an overwhelming range of supernatural powers, Reita’s only ability is spirit mediumship, allowing him to see and communicate with ghosts.

Despite being a fellow psychic, Reita is nowhere near as responsible or intelligent as Kusuo. He primarily uses his powers for selfish and perverted reasons, making him one of the most troublesome characters in the series. However, he occasionally proves himself useful, as his spiritual abilities allow him to handle problems that even Kusuo cannot easily deal with.

Appearance in anime

Reita transferred to PK Academy’s Class 2-➕, where he immediately tried to befriend Kusuo, believing that as fellow psychics, they were destined to work together. However, Kusuo immediately disliked him, seeing him as a nuisance and an idiot.

Unlike Kusuo, who struggles with his overwhelming powers, Reita is thrilled about having abilities, seeing them as a way to gain personal advantages. He often uses his spirit mediumship for inappropriate or selfish purposes, such as trying to impress girls or fulfill his perverted fantasies. Despite his questionable morals, Reita is not truly malicious he is simply a lazy and immature teenager who chooses to use his abilities irresponsibly.

Appearance

Reita has messy black hair with a short ponytail, giving him a somewhat unkempt appearance. His droopy eyes and smug expressions often make him look shady and untrustworthy, which accurately reflects his personality.

He wears the standard PK Academy uniform, consisting of a green jacket, white shirt, and black trim. His casual clothing choices often reflect his laid-back and carefree nature, reinforcing his slacker personality.

Personality

Reita is lazy, irresponsible, and highly perverted, using his spirit medium abilities almost exclusively for personal gain. Unlike Kusuo, who wants to hide his psychic powers, Reita openly brags about them, hoping they will make him more popular, especially with girls.

His biggest flaw is his perverted nature he frequently tries to use his ability to peep on girls, communicate with the spirits of deceased perverts, or convince women that ghosts want to date him. This leads to many humiliating moments, as his schemes always backfire spectacularly.

Despite his greedy and selfish nature, Reita is not truly evil he simply lacks discipline and common sense. When serious situations arise, he is capable of stepping up, and his spiritual abilities occasionally prove to be genuinely helpful.

Role in the Story

  • The Comic Relief Psychic
Reita serves as one of the biggest sources of comedic relief in Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan. His overconfidence, perverted schemes, and general stupidity make him an easy target for karma, as his plans always fail hilariously.

  • Handling Spiritual Problems
While Kusuo has psychic powers beyond comprehension, he struggles with ghosts, as they are not bound by physical laws. This makes Reita’s spirit mediumship occasionally useful, as he can communicate with spirits and resolve supernatural disturbances.

  • Trying (and Failing) to Be Kusuo’s Friend
Reita desperately wants to befriend Kusuo, seeing him as a fellow psychic who could help him become more powerful. However, Kusuo wants nothing to do with him, viewing him as an immature idiot. Despite this, Reita continues to force himself into Kusuo’s life, creating many hilarious and frustrating situations.

Relationships

Kusuo Saiki
Reita sees Kusuo as a psychic “brother-in-arms”, believing that they should work together as supernatural allies. However, Kusuo absolutely despises Reita, considering him stupid, annoying, and completely untrustworthy.

Mikoto Aiura
Mikoto and Reita often butt heads, as she dislikes his perverted nature. However, they both work in the supernatural field, so they occasionally team up to handle spiritual matters. Mikoto frequently scolds him for his idiocy, but she acknowledges that his spirit-seeing ability is useful.

Touma Akechi
Touma, being extremely intelligent and observant, immediately sees Reita as an idiot. However, he is also fascinated by psychics, meaning he occasionally asks Reita questions about his abilities, even though he finds Reita’s personality frustrating.

Ghosts and Spirits
Unlike Kusuo, who cannot easily interact with ghosts, Reita can freely communicate with them, making him a bridge between the living and the dead. However, most of the spirits he interacts with are just as perverted as he is, leading to many ridiculous situations.

Trivia

    • Reita’s last name, “Toritsuka” (鳥束), means “bird bundle,” which may reference how he is constantly swarmed by spirits.
      • He is the only psychic in the series whose abilities are exclusively tied to the spiritual world.
      • His biggest dream is to have “a harem of beautiful ghosts” a goal that is both ridiculous and impossible.
      • Despite his lazy nature, he occasionally proves to be a valuable ally when supernatural problems arise.
      • He is one of the few characters who actively tries to use his abilities for personal gain, while most others see their powers as a burden.

    Legacy

      • Reita Toritsuka is one of the funniest and most ridiculous characters in Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan, serving as both a supernatural asset and an endless source of comedic failure. His incompetence, perverted nature, and desperate attempts to use his powers for personal gain make him one of the most chaotic elements in the series.
        • While Kusuo may never accept him as a friend, Reita’s spirit mediumship occasionally proves useful, making him a necessary, if deeply frustrating, part of the story. His endless optimism, despite constant humiliation, ensures that he remains one of the most unforgettable characters in the series.
