Tomoe

Tomoe (巴衛) is a prominent deuteragonist in the Kamisama Kiss anime and manga series. As a fox yokai, he currently serves as the familiar of Nanami Momozono.

Having been abandoned by his previous master, Mikage, Tomoe has spent the last two decades managing the dilapidated shrine of the land god on his own. His life takes an unexpected turn when Nanami, a powerless young girl, arrives at the shrine, marked by the wayward god. Initially furious at her presence, Tomoe adamantly refuses to accept her as his new master and chooses to retreat into a life of indulgence, seeking solace in sloth, drink, and revelry.

However, in the unpredictable realm “over yonder,” circumstances often defy expectations. As time passes, Tomoe finds himself unexpectedly drawn to Nanami. Their bond deepens as he desires her companionship, often wanting to hold her hand and share conversations as they navigate their journey together.

Ultimately, Tomoe’s feelings evolve, leading him to marry Nanami Momozono, solidifying their connection.

Do not set things into motion out of needless consideration.

Tomoe’s strikingly handsome features attract numerous admirers wherever he goes, though he generally remains indifferent to their attention, preferring not to form any deeper connections.

As a yokai, Tomoe ages at an incredibly slow rate. Despite being several hundred years old, he presents as a young man in his late teens or early twenties. His hair is a lustrous silver-white, typically styled short, though he once wore it long in a previous era. Tomoe possesses large, fox-like ears that he can manipulate with ease. His eyes, resembling those of a fox, are angled and feature violet pupils that intensify in color with strong emotions. While it may appear that he wears eyeliner, this is likely an illusion. His most distinctive feature is his voluminous, fluffy white tail.

In his wild fox form, Tomoe dresses flamboyantly, donning a dramatic kimono adorned with flame patterns. His long hair flows freely, complemented by a traditional samurai sword at his side. As a shinshi, however, he adopts a more understated look, typically seen in a white yukata paired with a somber-colored haori, either black or dark blue. It is evident that he feels most at ease in traditional attire, often going barefoot. Nevertheless, he pragmatically conforms to societal norms by wearing a standard boy’s uniform when accompanying Nanami Momozono to school.

Following a ten-year time skip, Tomoe’s appearance changes, featuring shorter hair than before. Notably, his fox ears have disappeared, signifying his transformation away from being a yokai, or fox spirit.

History

Tomoe’s life almost ended abruptly 500 years ago when he was unexpectedly ambushed in a brothel by Ikusagami, the god of war. The gods determined that Tomoe and Akura-ou’s violent rampage through the human and yokai realms had to be stopped. To achieve this, Ikusagami wielded a sacred sword and set out to hunt the elusive white fox.

In the ensuing battle, Tomoe’s weapon was shattered by Ikusagami’s superior blade, leaving him mortally wounded. He fled to the countryside, only to collapse near a river as armed humans closed in on him. In a desperate attempt to escape, he transformed himself into a child to deceive his pursuers. However, this strategy nearly failed, if not for the timely intervention of a kind-hearted young girl who appeared just in time to save him.

Before arriving at Mikage shrine, Tomoe’s life was marked by violence and bloodshed. As the companion of Akura-ou, the demon king, he forged a path of death and destruction across both human and yokai worlds. This reign of terror came to an abrupt halt when he was attacked and critically injured by Ikusagami. Yet, even five centuries later, the wild fox is still known and feared by every yokai he encounters.

The events leading up to Tomoe’s binding to Mikage are intertwined with a mysterious romantic history. Long ago, he fell deeply in love with a human girl and made a pact with a fallen god to live as a human, intending to perish when his beloved did. However, something went awry; he did not transform into a human and was left to die when Mikage discovered him wandering alone in the woods. With Mikage’s sealing of his memories, Tomoe retained no recollection of this chapter of his life before meeting Nanami.

Plot

Contract with Nanami
When Tomoe first encounters Nanami, he holds a deep disdain for her and decides to leave the temple, making his way to the Red District of The Other World. Despite her frustration, Nanami feels compelled to follow him, recognizing the effort he has put into maintaining the temple. In a fit of anger, she heads to the Mikage Temple to retrieve his belongings, intending to leave for good. However, on his journey, Tomoe falls prey to a witch’s trickery, who invites him to her home under false pretenses, planning to devour him later.

Persuaded by Kotetsu, Tomoe ultimately decides to “rescue” Nanami, who has escaped from the witch’s lair alongside Onikiri and is being pursued. Initially, Tomoe seeks only to humiliate her, declaring that he will save her only if she begs for forgiveness. But when Nanami falls from a branch, he instinctively accompanies her descent, telling her that she still has a chance to save herself if she pleads for her life. In a surprising turn of events, as she falls, Nanami kisses him, sealing their pact as land god and familiar. From that moment on, albeit reluctantly, Tomoe becomes Nanami’s familiar and ultimately defeats the witch.

Journey to the Past
Amidst a new curse, Tomoe wishes to hide his vulnerable state from Nanami. To achieve this, Mikage places him within the Magic Mirror, a refuge he previously used to escape the Goddess of Lightning. Yukiji, a woman surrounded by destructive demons, brings misfortune, and Mikage warns Tomoe that if he doesn’t eliminate her, the demons will wipe out all existing life. He also reveals that he was compelled by a woman to seek a Fallen God.

Returning to the room where Yukiji is in labor, Tomoe experiences a mix of emotions when the midwives suggest that he hold the newborn. Though he has the capacity to love a human, he grapples with the knowledge that his strength can easily destroy them.

Epilogue
Eventually, Nanami and Tomoe marry, and he takes up a job in an office. However, after ten years, he decides to quit to spend more time with his wife. When he learns the gender of their child, he hopes they will inherit qualities from Nanami. The couple returns to Mikage Shrine following the birth of their son.

Power & Abilities

Tomoe possesses extraordinary abilities that elevate him to a nearly god-like status, marked by a short temper. His remarkable powers, charm, and striking appearance make him a highly sought-after shinshi, admired by envious gods and feared by yokai alike.

Tomoe’s Kitsunebi Fox-fire.

In his early days as a wild fox, Tomoe was renowned for his command over vast oceans of foxfire—a supernatural flame capable of incinerating his foes in an instant. He can harness this foxfire to soar through the air, locate individuals or objects, or simply illuminate his surroundings. Additionally, he is an accomplished swordsman and can alter his appearance and that of others using enchanted leaves. Tomoe possesses exceptional hearing, strength, dexterity, and a reliable sixth sense. His fingers and toes are equipped with razor-sharp claws, which he is not hesitant to use in combat. Perhaps his most formidable traits are his intelligence, cunning, courage, and resourcefulness.

Despite his penchant for leisure, Tomoe demonstrates a strong work ethic when he commits to a task. He takes his responsibilities as a shinshi of Mikage shrine seriously, diligently ensuring that everything is clean and well-maintained on a daily basis. In his role, he also protects and cares for Nanami, managing the cooking, cleaning, and laundry while she is occupied with school or honing her divine abilities. Although he does not require sustenance, he immerses himself in the art of cooking, achieving impressive results. This culinary skill has become a tool in his clever repertoire, as he playfully adds shiitake mushrooms to Nanami’s meals when she annoys him or threatens to serve an enemy as sashimi.

Tomoe’s ability to transform using enchanted leaves allows him to change his form or that of others. He has used this power to turn Kurama into an ostrich and a servant of Himemiko into a fish, all while playfully threatening his adversaries with the prospect of being cooked. Notably, he once transformed into Nanami to substitute for her when she fell ill and was unable to attend school. This ability also proved crucial during a life-threatening encounter with the God of War 500 years ago, when he transformed into a child to mislead those pursuing him, disguising his yokai nature as human.

Relationships

Nanami and Tomoe.

Nanami Momozono
Nanami is Tomoe’s master, the former God of Mikage Shrine. Initially, their relationship is strained, but as the story progresses, both begin to open up to each other. When Nanami confesses her feelings for him, Tomoe declines, but later hints at developing romantic feelings for her. He eventually acknowledges that he has fallen for Nanami while grappling with the complexities of being a demon in love with a human. Despite being one of the most powerful yokai, he fears Nanami’s anger, especially when he flirts with other girls, triggering her jealousy. Tomoe finds amusement in her jealousy, once remarking, “a woman’s jealousy is a scary thing.”

Tomoe continues to refer to Nanami as Yukiji, causing her to doubt whether it is truly her he loves. Nevertheless, he takes her to a sakura garden, evoking fond memories of their first meeting and her past acts of kindness. In a heartfelt moment, he admits his love for her, prompting Nanami to joyfully reveal that she already considers herself his, with the promise of becoming his wife in the future. However, their moment is cut short when Nanami’s time traveling runs out, causing her to collapse.

In later chapters, Tomoe realizes that the woman he loved in the past was never Yukiji but was, in fact, Nanami, a descendant of Yukiji. They enter a romantic relationship, both striving to fulfill promises made in the past. In Chapter 102, they share a significant moment under an umbrella, symbolizing their love. By Chapter 103, Tomoe expresses a desire to rekindle their past romance, causing both excitement and apprehension for Nanami, who is protected by Mizuki and Mikage from any unforeseen consequences.

Tomoe also yearns to become human to remain by Nanami’s side. After accepting a drink from Kurama, believing it would make him human, he is instead transformed back into a fox, underscoring his determination to be with her.

In Chapter 124, Nanami announces their official engagement. The final OVA of the anime depicts their wedding, where both Tomoe and Nanami transform back into humans and start a family, welcoming a baby boy and returning to the Mikage Shrine.

Akura-Ou
Akura-Ou was once Tomoe’s comrade, but their friendship deteriorated when Tomoe declared his love for a human girl and his intention to become human. Akura-Ou’s anger led to their separation. Five hundred years later, he expresses disdain for Tomoe’s choice, calling it madness. In their earlier days, Tomoe often got annoyed with Akura-Ou for stealing his belongings. When they reunite, Tomoe confesses his feelings for Yukiji and his wish to become human, which angers Akura-Ou. Despite the threat of violence, Tomoe hugs him, urging him to take care of himself, while Akura-Ou feels abandoned but is unaware of his own loneliness.

Mikage
Mikage is Tomoe’s former master and the deity who saved him from death. For 500 years, Tomoe served him until Mikage disappeared, later returning in Chapter 79 to explain his absence was due to searching for a cure for Tomoe’s curse marks. After erasing Tomoe’s memories of Yukiji, Mikage mentored him on the values of human life. Tomoe’s attachment to Mikage was profound, leading him to wait for Mikage’s return.

Mizuki
Mizuki is Tomoe’s fellow familiar and apprentice at Mikage Shrine. Their relationship is characterized by playful banter and mock fights, masking a deeper care for each other. Initially, Mizuki attempts to convince Nanami to dislike Tomoe, believing it would elevate his own status as her familiar. However, as the story unfolds, Mizuki realizes that Nanami’s feelings for Tomoe are unwavering.

Mamoru
Mamoru, Nanami’s monkey shikigami, was a test given to her by Otohiko to determine her commitment to attending the Divine Assembly in Izumo. Initially frustrated with Nanami’s interest in Mamoru, Tomoe’s jealousy grows when the monkey inadvertently becomes the center of her attention. Their relationship is rocky, especially when Tomoe lashes out at Mamoru, revealing his insecurities.

Kurama Shinjirou
Kurama, a tengu yokai from Kurama Mountain, initially inspires jealousy in Tomoe due to his ability to understand Nanami’s emotions. However, their relationship evolves into a friendship, with Kurama offering Tomoe advice on how to express his feelings for Nanami. In the Kurama Mountain arc, Kurama encourages Tomoe to confess his love, emphasizing the fleeting nature of a human’s life. Though Tomoe eventually declares his feelings, it is during a drunken moment, leaving Nanami unaware of his true sentiments.

Princess Narukami
Narukami, the lightning god, harbors feelings for Tomoe, which leads to a conflict with Nanami. After cursing Mikage for “stealing Tomoe away,” she attempts to make him her familiar by transforming him into a child. During this time, Nanami cares for him, and eventually makes a deal with Narukami to restore Tomoe’s original form. Their relationship is contentious, with Tomoe clearly expressing his dislike for her.

Yukiji
Yukiji was Tomoe’s past love, for whom he would go to great lengths, even resorting to violence to obtain a powerful artifact to save her life. After her death, Tomoe expresses deep sorrow, revealing the extent of his feelings. In Chapter 80, his curse is awakened when he remembers her, triggering events that lead to Nanami traveling back in time. While in the past, Nanami discovers Yukiji’s animosity towards yokai. Despite her resemblance to Yukiji, Tomoe is unaware that his true feelings are for Nanami, leading to complications in their relationships. In Chapter 91, he mistakenly believes Nanami is Yukiji and pursues her, oblivious to the truth.
