Tet

Tet(テト,Teto) is known as theGod of Play(遊戯の神,Yūgi no Kami), holding the esteemed title of theOne True God(唯一神,Yuiitsushin). He earned this status after emerging victorious in the Great War, claiming the powerful artifact, the Suniaster, before any other deity could. Despite his non-involvement in the actual conflict, Tet’s triumph elevated him above all other gods, cementing his dominance. Unlike the beings of the 16 distinct races, Tet exists independently, acting as an observer over the world, symbolized by his representation as the king piece in chess.

Tet’s influence extended further whenShiroandSora, two brilliant siblings, managed to defeat him in a game of Internet chess. Impressed by their prowess, Tet summoned the duo to the world ofDisboard, presenting it as an opportunity to rescue Immanity, the race of humans. To challenge Tet for his title of the One True God, a conant must first collect all the chess pieces representing the 16 races. This requires, as outlined by the tenth rule of theTen Covenants, either defeating or uniting the races before gaining the privilege to face him in a final match.

From this piece of Heaven, I command that there will be no plundering or bloodshed.

Tet’s full appearance.

Tet is often seen sporting a playful and whimsical look that reflects his title as the God of Play. He wears a beret with a brim, topped with a yellow clover symbol, adding a touch of charm to his ensemble. Beneath his right eye is a small red heart, one of his subtle yet striking features. However, Tet’s most captivating characteristic lies in his multi-colored eyes—his right pupil is shaped like a diamond, while the left bears the form of a spade. These unique details give him an otherworldly appearance.

Adding to his eccentric style, Tet wears a large metal earring resembling a die on his left ear, along with a blue choker and matching bracelets on both wrists. His casual outfit includes a red hoodie layered over a chartreuse shirt, paired with typical blue shorts, emphasizing his youthful, boyish appearance. The symbols of a deck of cards seem to be scattered across his attire—his hat, for instance, features a yellow club symbol.

Even Tet’s footwear is asymmetrical, with a red sock on his right foot and a red cloth wrapped around his left, enhancing his quirky and unpredictable nature.

From the moment Tet welcomed Shiro and Sora into his world, he radiated a cheerful and playful demeanor reminiscent of an ordinary boy his age. His lighthearted approach to life is infectious, inviting others to join in the fun of Disboard.

The rules Tet has laid out in Disboard reflect his aversion to violence and conflict, likely rooted in the painful memories of the Great War. This inclination underscores his benevolent and peace-loving nature, as he strives to foster an environment of camaraderie rather than chaos.

Tet often expresses a preference for being a spectator, showcasing his reluctance to meddle in the affairs of others. He tends to view the other Old Deus with disdain, finding them uninteresting and, at times, outright boring. This detachment allows him to enjoy the games and interactions from the sidelines, savoring the thrill of observation.

Interestingly, despite his undefeated record, experiencing defeat is a new and unwelcome feeling for Tet. This fear of losing drives his actions, especially when he brought Blank into Disboard, as depicted in Episode 4. His desire to challenge himself while avoiding the sting of loss adds an intriguing layer to his character, highlighting the complexities beneath his playful exterior.

Background

Long ago, a boy named Riku, who had a penchant for playing chess against himself, often envisioned an ‘ultimate gamer’ seated across the board, perpetually challenging him with a smile. This imaginative companion became a symbol of Riku’s desire for competition and connection.

During the climax of the Great War, Riku succeeded in summoning the powerful artifact known as the Suniaster. However, feeling unworthy of its immense power, he chose to pray for someone deserving to wield it and transform the world for the better. In his final moments, Riku’s wish manifested into reality as the ‘ultimate gamer’ he had imagined came to life. This being introduced himself as Tet, the last and weakest of the Old Deus, born from Riku’s wish and the overwhelming surge of magical energy surrounding the Suniaster. Claiming the Suniaster for himself, Tet became the One True God and swiftly utilized his newfound power to heal the planet and establish the Ten Covenants, thus bringing an end to the Great War.

In the aftermath, as the Exceed races gradually adapted to their new realities, Tet frequently donned the guise of various races to infiltrate their societies and relish in their experiences. His adventures were not limited to Disboard; he delighted in exploring other worlds and parallel dimensions, absorbing new games and strategies along the way.

Fast forward 6,000 years, during one of his excursions, Tet encountered two siblings renowned for their unbeatable prowess in gaming. Intrigued by their reputation, he challenged them to an online chess match—only to face defeat for the first time in his existence. Thrilled to finally meet worthy opponents, Tet transported Sora and Shiro to Disboard, offering them the chance to challenge him for the title of One True God.

Since that pivotal encounter, Tet has eagerly observed Sora and Shiro, reveling in their potential. After the Avant Heim joined the Commonwealth of Elkia, he decided to masquerade as an Immanity to engage with the siblings directly. However, he soon collapsed on the streets after three days without food. When Izuna discovered him and offered him some fish, Tet eagerly challenged her to various games, sharing tales of Riku and Schwi during the Great War, enriching her understanding of the world’s history.

Abilities

Strengths

As the One True God, Tet stands as the strongest among the Old Deus, wielding a vast array of unknown powers. Among his definitive abilities are teleportation, levitation, interdimensional travel, and reality warping. His magical prowess is unparalleled in Disboard, with an immense reservoir of magical energy that exceeds that of any other being. Notably, Jibril once remarked that even the Old Deus would struggle to summon a living entity from another world, yet Tet effortlessly maintained two such beings in Disboard without any adverse effects. Additionally, as the God of Play, Tet is exceptionally skilled at games, having only faced defeat once in his existence, at the hands of Sora and Shiro.

Weakness

At present, Tet appears to have no discernible weaknesses. Although he did lose to Sora and Shiro in an online chess match, this marked the first defeat of his life, and he pushed them to their limits in the process. It is worth noting that before he obtained the Suniaster, Tet was the weakest of the Old Deus, brought into existence solely by Riku’s wish.
