Tatsu

Tatsu (龍) is the main character of Gokushufudou: The Way of the House Husband. Once a feared and legendary member of the yakuza, he earned the nickname “The Immortal Dragon” for his unmatched power and ruthless reputation. However, Tatsu has since retired from his life of crime and now dedicates himself fully to domestic life as a househusband for his wife, Miku.

Despite leaving the criminal world behind, Tatsu’s past still lingers. He later becomes involved with the Women’s Association, where he adopts the moniker “The Decorator”—a title given to him by Fukada, one of the Eight Dragons of the Association. This new role marks an interesting shift in Tatsu’s life, from a feared yakuza to a key figure in the domestic and social circles of his community.

Tatsu presents an imposing figure, characterized by his striking appearance. His black hair is typically styled back, complementing his dark brown eyes and the facial hair that adorns his upper lip and chin. His body is covered in intricate yakuza tattoos that extend from his back and chest, spiraling down to his forearms. These tattoos, depicting a dragon, serve as a visual testament to his affiliation and power. Adding to his intimidating presence are several scars scattered across his body, likely the result of past encounters. One of the most notable scars is a long, thin mark that runs from his hairline, over his left eyebrow, and down to his cheek—an unmistakable feature that further enhances his menacing yakuza persona.

His usual attire is a mix of casual and formal, often seen in a cream-colored Shiba Inu apron over his clothing. Tatsu is rarely without his aviator sunglasses, which he wears even indoors, contributing to his cool, aloof demeanor. When riding his bike, he is typically seen donning a dark fedora and carrying a silver metal briefcase, completing his distinctive, mysterious look.

Personality

Tatsu approaches every aspect of his life with unwavering seriousness, particularly his role as a house-husband. His use of yakuza-style language in everyday situations often gives even the most mundane tasks a menacing flair, turning something as simple as flour into an ominous affair. This unique way of speaking adds a layer of humor and unpredictability to his character.

Despite his tough exterior, Tatsu is revealed to be somewhat paranoid, a result of his violent and bloody past. This paranoia often leads to comedic situations, as seen when he and Miku attempt to buy a car—where his over-the-top reactions add to the absurdity of the moment, leaving others (and the audience) in stitches.

At his core, Tatsu is deeply loyal and caring toward those he holds dear. He’s willing to go above and beyond for the people in his life, even if it means enduring personal harm or injury along the way. His actions, driven by a sense of duty and affection, reveal the softer side of this otherwise fearsome figure.

Synopsis

Tatsu fully commits himself to managing the household, taking pride in cleaning, cooking, and handling all domestic duties with meticulous care. An exceptional cook, he has a unique flair for making even the simplest dishes look “cute” and charming. However, Tatsu’s past as a feared yakuza member makes it nearly impossible for him to leave the house without drawing attention—whether from law enforcement or other members of the underworld, both of whom easily recognize his formidable presence.

Abilities

Strength: In Episode 1, Nagai recounts a legendary tale about Tatsu’s immense strength, describing how he allegedly singlehandedly destroyed 10 rival yakuza offices in a single night—without the aid of any weapons. This feat highlights not only Tatsu’s formidable physical power but also his terrifying reputation within the underworld.

Relationships

Miku: Tatsu and Miku share a unique, yet deeply loving relationship. Their bond began when Miku found Tatsu gravely injured after a brutal battle and took him to safety. Over time, their connection grew stronger, eventually leading to marriage. Tatsu even left the yakuza for her. He’s shown to be fiercely protective, as seen when he stepped in to save her from a volleyball accident. While the couple occasionally bickers, their love for each other is undeniable, and they always work through their disagreements.

Masa: Masa was once Tatsu’s subordinate in the yakuza. Their relationship evolves after Tatsu leaves the underworld, and Masa, recognizing Tatsu’s transformation into a househusband, decides to follow his example and learn to take care of himself. Despite Masa’s admiration for Tatsu, he often finds himself on the receiving end of Tatsu’s frustration, especially when he messes up. Tatsu can be quite harsh with him, frequently slapping him to teach him lessons about responsibility and self-reliance.

  • Episode 1: Tatsu explains to Masa that he protects what’s sacred in his own special way—through domesticity, not violence. When Masa mocks him, Tatsu slaps him, sending him flying through a glass window.

  • Episode 2: When Masa finds himself in trouble with a rival yakuza group, he turns to Tatsu for help. Tatsu, however, insists that he handle it himself, giving him a harsh slap as a lesson in personal responsibility.

  • Episode 3: Tatsu scolds Masa for carelessly mixing colors and whites in the laundry, giving him another slap to emphasize the importance of proper care.

  • Episode 7: During a trip to a 100-yen store, Masa disrespects some of the items, prompting Tatsu to slap him and scold him for his lack of respect.

  • Episode 8: When Masa urges Tatsu to relax for a day, Tatsu cannot resist the urge to do chores. Masa tries to keep him from moving, leading to a humorous confrontation in which Tatsu ends up slapping him again.

  • Episode 10: Tatsu forces Masa to go to the dentist after he refuses to seek treatment for a toothache. Tatsu’s forceful methods include dragging Masa by his legs and slamming him to the ground, making it clear that he will not back down when it comes to caring for others.

Ryouta: Tatsu occasionally babysits Ryouta, taking on the role of a caring figure outside his usual tough persona.

Torajirou: Tatsu meets Torajirou in Episode 3, though their relationship is still in its early stages.

Etymology

The name “Tatsu” (竜) translates to “dragon,” which is reflected in both his nickname, “The Immortal Dragon,” and the dragon tattoo that covers his body. The symbolic connection to the dragon emphasizes his fierce and powerful nature, both in his past as a yakuza and in his current life.

Live Action
In the live-action adaptation, Tatsu’s surname, “Kuroda” (黒田), is derived from two Japanese characters: “kuro” (黒), meaning “black,” and “ta” (田), meaning “field” or “rice paddy.” This combination of characters evokes a sense of grounded strength and resilience, complementing Tatsu’s formidable yet humble persona.
