Tanukichi Okuma (奥間 狸吉, Okuma Tanukichi), is the main male protagonist of Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist. He is a first-year student at Tokioka Academy and the co-founder of SOX, an underground organization dedicated to rebelling against Japan’s oppressive morality laws. Initially, Tanukichi despises dirty jokes and inappropriate behavior, as he was raised under the shadow of his infamous father, a notorious pervert and rebel against Japan’s censorship laws. However, his worldview is turned upside down when he is recruited by Blue Snow, the masked leader of SOX, and forced to become a part of the very movement he once detested.
Despite his reluctance and embarrassment, Tanukichi gradually adapts to his role in SOX, often serving as the “straight man” amidst the absurdity surrounding him. He finds himself caught between his admiration for the strict and pure-hearted Student Council President, Anna Nishikinomiya, and the chaotic, perverse influence of Blue Snow (Ayame Kajou). As the series progresses, Tanukichi discovers his own beliefs about freedom, censorship, and expression, making him a reluctant but vital figure in the battle against oppressive social norms.
Background

Appearance in anime
Tanukichi is the son of Zenjuro Okuma, a legendary criminal who was imprisoned for opposing Japan’s strict moral laws regarding obscene language and behavior. Due to his father’s notorious reputation, Tanukichi grew up facing public scorn and discrimination, leading him to distance himself from his father’s beliefs. Instead of embracing his father’s ideology, Tanukichi vowed to become a model citizen, aspiring to be as pure and righteous as his childhood crush, Anna Nishikinomiya.
In pursuit of this goal, Tanukichi enrolled at Tokioka Academy, a prestigious school known for its strict moral code and elite students. However, his dreams of a peaceful and respectable school life were shattered when he crossed paths with Ayame Kajou, the infamous “Blue Snow”, who immediately blackmailed him into joining SOX. From that moment on, Tanukichi became embroiled in a world of rebellion, obscene jokes, and chaotic antics, all while struggling to reconcile his old ideals with his new reality.
Appearance
Tanukichi has short, dark brown hair and brown eyes, giving him a relatively plain and average appearance compared to the more flamboyant and eccentric members of SOX. He is typically seen wearing his school uniform, which consists of a white dress shirt, dark pants, and a school blazer, though he occasionally dons disguises or ridiculous outfits as part of SOX’s operations.
While he appears ordinary, Tanukichi’s expressions and body language often reflect his exasperation and discomfort, as he frequently finds himself embroiled in embarrassing and compromising situations due to the outrageous antics of his allies. His awkwardness and tendency to panic in extreme situations only add to his relatable and comedic nature.
Personality
Tanukichi starts off as serious, reserved, and highly idealistic, striving to distance himself from his father’s “perverse legacy” by embracing moral purity. He holds Anna Nishikinomiya in high regard, seeing her as the embodiment of everything good and righteous. However, after being forced into SOX, Tanukichi quickly realizes the absurdity of the world he lives in, where even the most innocent expressions of human sexuality are criminalized.
Though reluctant at first, Tanukichi gradually adapts to SOX’s cause, developing a sharper wit, cunning instincts, and a rebellious streak. While he remains the most level-headed and rational member of the group, he occasionally gets swept up in the insanity around him, displaying moments of resourcefulness and bravery when the situation demands it. Despite his repeated protests and embarrassment, he proves to be a valuable asset to SOX, often devising clever strategies and executing dangerous missions with surprising efficiency.
At his core, Tanukichi is kind-hearted and protective, showing genuine concern for his friends, particularly Ayame and Anna. Though he frequently clashes with Ayame’s extreme methods, he comes to respect her dedication to freedom. His biggest internal conflict is his relationship with Anna, as he struggles to reconcile his childhood admiration for her with her increasingly obsessive and unpredictable behavior.
