Takao Kawafuji

Takao Kawafuji (川藤 鷹生, Kawafuji Takao), is Seishuu Handa’s longtime friend and art dealer, responsible for managing Seishuu’s calligraphy career and handling his professional affairs. While he often teases and manipulates Seishuu for his own amusement, Kawafuji genuinely cares about his friend’s well-being and acts as a bridge between Seishuu and the outside world.

As one of the few people who can handle Seishuu’s temper and eccentricities, Kawafuji plays a critical role in Seishuu’s character development, offering both guidance and tough love when necessary.

Appearance in anime

Kawafuji and Seishuu have known each other since high school, forming a long-standing friendship based on mutual understanding and playful banter. Unlike Seishuu, who is high-strung and overly serious, Kawafuji is laid-back, charismatic, and effortlessly social, making him Seishuu’s complete opposite in personality.

As Seishuu’s art dealer and manager, Kawafuji is responsible for handling his professional relationships, marketing his calligraphy, and ensuring his career stays on track. However, despite his business-savvy nature, he often puts minimal effort into managing Seishuu, preferring to push him in the right direction with sarcasm and light manipulation rather than direct intervention.

It was Kawafuji who introduced Seishuu to the art critic that ultimately provoked his infamous outburst, indirectly leading to Seishuu’s exile to the Goto Islands. Though he feels guilty about it, he also recognizes that the experience is necessary for Seishuu’s growth, occasionally checking in on him from afar.

Appearance

Kawafuji has sharp facial features, medium-length brown hair, and a laid-back yet stylish appearance. He often wears casual business attire, such as a blazer over a simple T-shirt, reflecting his professional but relaxed nature.

His confident posture and smirking expression give off the impression of a smooth talker, contrasting with Seishuu’s more rigid and easily flustered demeanor.

Personality

Kawafuji is charismatic, easygoing, and highly perceptive, making him well-suited for the art business. He has a sharp wit and a dry sense of humor, often mocking Seishuu’s dramatic tendencies while subtly guiding him toward self-improvement.

Despite his occasionally manipulative tendencies, Kawafuji is genuinely concerned for Seishuu’s well-being, making sure that he doesn’t completely self-destruct due to stress or perfectionism. He is one of the few people who can handle Seishuu’s temper, often diffusing tense situations with humor and sarcasm.

However, Kawafuji can also be somewhat lazy and opportunistic, preferring to take the easiest route in any situation rather than going out of his way to help. He often avoids confrontation and lets Seishuu figure things out on his own, believing that pushing him too hard will only backfire.

Even so, when it truly matters, Kawafuji steps in to support Seishuu, proving that beneath his teasing and detached attitude, he is a reliable and loyal friend.

Role in the Story

  • Sending Seishuu to the Goto Islands
After Seishuu punches the art critic, Kawafuji suggests that he take a break from Tokyo and go somewhere isolated to cool off. Though he downplays his involvement, it’s clear that he knows Seishuu needs time away to mature. While he doesn’t visit often, he occasionally checks in on Seishuu’s progress, offering sarcastic but well-meaning advice.

  • Acting as Seishuu’s Career Manager
As Seishuu’s art dealer, Kawafuji handles his calligraphy sales, exhibitions, and public relations, making sure that his career remains stable despite his eccentric personality. Though he often complains about the job, he is surprisingly competent, ensuring that Seishuu’s work continues to gain recognition even while he’s away on the island.

  • Keeping Seishuu Grounded
Kawafuji serves as the voice of reason in Seishuu’s life, reminding him to not take himself too seriously and encouraging him to embrace change. He provides a connection to Seishuu’s old life, but also nudges him toward accepting his new experiences on the island.

Relationships

Seishuu Handa
Kawafuji is Seishuu’s closest friend and manager, frequently teasing and messing with him but ultimately looking out for his best interests. While their friendship is built on playful antagonism, it is clear that Kawafuji deeply cares about Seishuu’s growth as both an artist and a person.

The Goto Islanders
Though Kawafuji is not as involved in island life as Seishuu, he occasionally interacts with the locals, often finding their chaotic energy amusing. He is particularly entertained by Naru’s antics, though he makes sure to keep a safe distance from the island’s unpredictability.
