However, this unrelenting dedication can come across as unnerving to those around him, as he often prioritizes the pursuit of medical progress above social norms.

Despite his caring intentions, Takahashi’s methods of treating patients are infamous for being both forceful and intimidating. He has been known to use needles as projectiles to immobilize unwilling patients or resort to physical measures to ensure compliance with treatments. His extreme approach has left many students and teachers at Hyakki Academy wary of him, with even his own brother, Kurai, harboring a deep-seated fear due to childhood trauma caused by Takahashi’s overzealous tendencies. Nevertheless, his softer side shines through in his compassionate actions, such as adopting Utagawa, the Zashiki-warashi, and Yamazaki, providing them with a home and protection despite societal prejudice. His home also serves as a sanctuary for orphaned youkai, reflecting his genuine care for the well-being of others, even if his methods are unconventional.

In his human form, Takahashi Akira has dark brown hair that falls over one side of his face, partially obscuring it. His piercing red eyes stand out, and he is typically dressed in a striped purple button-up shirt paired with a black tie and white lab coat, completing the look with black slacks. He is often seen holding a needle or scalpel, ready for medical use. When he becomes curious or excited, his cheeks flush with a blush, and his pupils transform into heart shapes, revealing his intense enthusiasm. Occasionally, his face and arms sprout multiple eyes, a manifestation of his Dodomeki nature, particularly when he is deeply engrossed in examining something.

In his relaxed, youkai form, Takahashi appears as a slightly chubby humanoid creature. This form features three vertically stacked eyes on his face and two horns protruding from his head, giving him a distinct and otherworldly appearance.

As a child, Takahashi Akira was an outcast, feared by the villagers and nicknamed the “Takahashi’s Oldest Troublemaking Son.” His presence alone would cause unease among the people in his village. One notable incident occurred when he overheard villagers pressuring Yamazaki, a fellow outcast, to transform into him as a means of cursing Takahashi. Intrigued, Akira approached Yamazaki, encouraged him to embrace his true form, and later begged his father to allow Yamazaki to live with them. This marked the beginning of Akira’s lifelong compassion for helping others, even as a child. His fascination with medicine also began early; he dreamt of creating a comprehensive youkai anatomy book and started his “research” by experimenting on his younger brother, which left a lasting impact on their relationship.

During his high school years, Akira became somewhat jaded about the state of medical care in the youkai world. His growing distrust of the medical authority at Hyakki Academy, combined with the widespread inadequacies in youkai healthcare, dulled his enthusiasm for pursuing a career in the field. Despite this, he frequently attended oni parties alongside his parents, where he was expected to mingle with influential individuals and participate in networking opportunities. These experiences deepened his understanding of societal expectations but did little to rekindle his youthful passion for medicine.

Takahashi Akira possesses unique abilities as a dodomeki that allow him to utilize eyes for both inspection and surveillance. He can grow multiple eyes along his body, which enhances his ability to closely inspect his patients and gather detailed information about their condition. These additional eyes grant him the ability to see beyond normal vision, enabling him to perceive spirit energy, the status of a person’s body, and other hidden or subtle features that ordinary sight cannot detect.

Furthermore, Akira can extend his ability to external surfaces, such as walls or ceilings, by manifesting eyes on them. These remote eyes act as surveillance tools, allowing him to observe his surroundings from multiple angles and maintain an omnipresent awareness in any location. His abilities also include the power to share his vision with others. Haruaki Abe
Takahashi and Haruaki share a somewhat humorous dynamic. Haruaki is deeply terrified of Takahashi, as are most people who encounter the dodomeki’s intense nature. Despite this fear, Haruaki once managed to orchestrate an elaborate plan to trap Takahashi in a locker and eject him into the atmosphere. Takahashi, surprisingly, was unbothered by the stunt, finding humor in Haruaki’s antics. Their interactions highlight Takahashi’s unflappable demeanor and Haruaki’s resourcefulness in dealing with his fears.

Amaaki Abe
Takahashi’s interactions with Amaaki are less cordial. When Amaaki visited Haruaki after the mall incident, Takahashi’s overly curious nature scared him. Takahashi even chased Amaaki around Hyakki Academy, eager to inspect him. This dynamic continued during the Renren Arc, where Takahashi terrified Amaaki again by punching a hole through Kuniko. His unsettling curiosity often creates tension between him and Amaaki.

Izuna Hatanaka
Hatanaka’s dislike for Takahashi stems from his fear of doctors. His initial check-up with Takahashi left a lasting impression, solidifying Hatanaka’s dread of him. Hatanaka avoids Takahashi whenever possible and grows visibly nervous when his name is mentioned. Interestingly, Takahashi was also the school nurse during Hatanaka’s high school years, adding to their history of uneasy interactions.

Kurai Takahashi
Kurai harbors a deep disdain for his brother Akira due to traumatic childhood experiences, including being tied down by Akira as part of his anatomical research. Despite Kurai’s resentment, Akira seems oblivious to the tension, believing they’ve never had a “sibling fight.” During the Renren Arc, Akira expressed excitement at finally engaging in a proper fight with Kurai, indicating his oblivious yet enthusiastic approach to their strained relationship.

Makoto Yamazaki
As childhood friends, Takahashi and Yamazaki share a long-standing bond. When Yamazaki was ostracized by his village, Takahashi offered him shelter and questioned him about his abilities before taking him in. During their time at Hyakki Academy, Yamazaki advised Takahashi to avoid Karasuma, who was known for questionable behavior. As adults, their friendship persists, though Yamazaki often wishes Takahashi would act more proper.

Kuniko Utagawa
Takahashi’s relationship with Kuniko began when he found her in her youkai form at a human hospital. After learning about her creation and past, he saved her core and brought her back to life. He raised Kuniko from that point, helping her catch up on her education. During her first year at Hyakki Academy, Takahashi wanted to attend her Parent-Teacher Conference. Though initially upset by his antics, Kuniko allowed him to attend as long as he disguised himself. Takahashi humorously attended as a pseudo-gangster, claiming to have a “close relationship with the cops,” a reference to Yamazaki.

Douman Ashiya
Takahashi and Douman share a friendly camaraderie. They occasionally go out drinking together, with Douman often covering the tab. Their bond is rooted in mutual respect, as Douman even showed Takahashi his face a rare gesture of trust, knowing Takahashi’s obsessive curiosity. Their friendship is marked by lightheartedness and genuine camaraderie.

Akira’s name, 明 (Akira), means “bright” or “clear,” contrasting with the dark and ominous nature of his dodomeki origins, symbolizing his role as a healer and protector.

His dodomeki abilities allow him to see spiritual energy flows, aiding him in diagnosing complex youkai illnesses.

Despite his calm exterior, Akira is known to enjoy playful pranks, especially on colleagues who underestimate his quiet nature.
