Suzuno Kamazuki

Suzuno Kamazuki (鎌月 鈴乃, Kamazuki Suzuno) / Crestia Bell (クレスティア・ベル, Kuresutia Beru), is a supporting character in Hataraku Maou-sama! (The Devil is a Part-Timer!). She is the Chief of the Doctrinal Corrections Council and a high-ranking official within the Church of Ente Isla. Originally sent to observe and eliminate the Demon King Sadao Maou, she later becomes his next-door neighbor in modern Tokyo.

Suzuno is often seen wearing traditional Japanese kimonos, as she struggles to adapt to modern Japanese culture and fashion. Though she appears polite and composed, she harbors a deadly past, having been trained as an executioner for the Church. However, her interactions with Maou and his allies challenge her rigid worldview, forcing her to question the true nature of good and evil.

Appearance in anime

Suzuno, known as Crestia Bell in Ente Isla, was raised in the Church of Ente Isla, where she was trained from a young age to serve as an executor of the Doctrinal Corrections Council. She was responsible for eliminating heretics and enemies of the Church, often carrying out assassinations in the name of divine justice.

She was deeply loyal to the Church, believing in their teachings without question. However, as the war against Demon King Satan unfolded, Suzuno began to witness the corruption within the organization, leading her to doubt the righteousness of her mission.

Assigned to monitor Maou in Japan, she took on the alias Suzuno Kamazuki and moved into the apartment next to his, intending to determine whether he still posed a threat. However, as she observed his mundane, hardworking life, she became increasingly conflicted about her original mission.

Appearance

Suzuno has the elegant and refined appearance of a traditional noblewoman, with long dark blue hair, pale skin, and deep blue eyes. She is rarely seen without her kimono, as she struggles to adapt to modern clothing styles.

Despite being in Japan, Suzuno only owns traditional outfits, which often make her stand out awkwardly in casual settings. Her old-fashioned mannerisms and speech further reinforce her disconnect from modern society.

When engaging in combat, Suzuno wields a ceremonial war hammer, a weapon symbolic of her role as an executioner for the Church.

Personality

Suzuno is polite, soft-spoken, and elegant, often presenting herself as a courteous and refined young woman. However, beneath her graceful exterior, she possesses a cold, ruthless side, shaped by her time as an executor for the Church.

Initially, Suzuno views Maou as a threat and is willing to eliminate him if necessary. However, after witnessing his hardworking and peaceful lifestyle, she becomes deeply conflicted about whether her mission is justified.

She often struggles with modern technology and social norms, leading to unintentional comedic moments. For example, she has difficulty understanding fast food culture, much to the amusement of Maou and Chiho.

Despite her stoic nature, Suzuno has a kind heart and slowly opens up to those around her, forming unexpected friendships with Maou, Ashiya, Chiho, and even her former enemy, Emi.

Role in the Story

  • Observing Maou in Japan
Suzuno moves into the apartment next to Maou’s, under the guise of a quiet and traditional neighbor. Initially, she maintains her distance, studying Maou’s daily life to determine whether he remains a threat. However, she is shocked to discover that the once-feared Demon King now works diligently at a fast-food restaurant, living a mundane and humble life. As she interacts more with Maou and his allies, Suzuno begins to question her mission, leading to an internal struggle between her past loyalty to the Church and her newfound perspective on Maou.

  • Reevaluating the Church’s Ideals
Over time, Suzuno starts to see the corruption within the Church more clearly. She realizes that the Church may not be as righteous as she once believed and that Maou, despite his past, is no longer the same evil ruler she was trained to destroy. Her journey of self-discovery becomes one of the most compelling aspects of her character, as she learns that justice is not always black and white.

  • Becoming an Ally to Maou
Although Suzuno originally intended to eliminate Maou, she eventually chooses to support him, recognizing that he is no longer the tyrant she once feared. She assists him in battles against other threats from Ente Isla, proving to be a capable warrior despite her preference for traditional methods. While she maintains a calm and composed demeanor, she often gets frustrated with Maou’s carefree attitude, leading to comedic arguments between them.

Relationships

Sadao Maou / Demon King Satan
Initially, Suzuno sees Maou as her target, believing that he is still a threat to humanity. However, after witnessing his kindness and work ethic, she begins to respect him and even fights alongside him. Though she reprimands him often, she ultimately supports him as an ally.

Emilia Justina / Emi Yusa
Suzuno and Emi share a complex relationship, initially disagreeing on how to handle Maou. While Emi still holds resentment toward the Demon King, Suzuno gradually sees him in a more neutral light. Over time, the two develop a mutual understanding and become trusted allies.

Chiho Sasaki
Chiho is one of Suzuno’s closest friends, often helping her adjust to modern Japan. Though Suzuno finds Chiho’s crush on Maou amusing, she deeply respects her determination and protective nature toward their group.

Shirō Ashiya / Alciel
Suzuno gets along relatively well with Ashiya, as they both value discipline and responsibility. However, she sometimes finds his overprotectiveness of Maou excessive, leading to occasional disagreements.

Hanzō Urushihara / Lucifer
Suzuno sees Urushihara as lazy and useless, frequently criticizing him for his NEET lifestyle. Their interactions are often comedic, with Suzuno scolding him for being unproductive while he shrugs off her remarks.

Trivia

    • Her name “Crestia Bell” evokes a sense of divine purity, fitting her background as a Church executor.
      • She is highly skilled in traditional Japanese arts, but clueless about modern life, often struggling with technology and slang.
      • Despite her polite demeanor, she is terrifying in battle, able to dispatch enemies swiftly and without hesitation.
      • She loves traditional Japanese food, especially tofu dishes, but finds fast food strange and unhealthy.
      • Suzuno is one of the few characters in the series to wield a melee weapon, using a ceremonial war hammer in combat.
      • She occasionally teases Chiho about her crush on Maou, though she never actively interferes.

    Legacy

      • Suzuno Kamazuki / Crestia Bell is one of Hataraku Maou-sama!’s most layered characters, blending elegance, combat prowess, and internal conflict into a unique and compelling role. Initially a cold and calculating enforcer, she undergoes significant growth, realizing that justice is not absolute and that Maou is no longer the villain she once believed him to be.
        • Her traditional lifestyle and outdated mannerisms provide some of the series’ best comedic moments, while her internal struggle between duty and morality adds emotional depth to her character. As both a powerful ally and a voice of reason, Suzuno serves as an essential bridge between Ente Isla’s conflicts and Maou’s newfound humanity.
