She is a second-year student in the piloting department at Asticassia School of Technology, having transferred from the planet Mercury. Suletta in her Mobile Pilot Suit

Suletta Mercury is a petite teenage girl with a distinctive and expressive look that reflects her gentle personality and Mercury origins. She has wavy, reddish-orange hair styled in a short bob that curls slightly at the ends. A defining feature of her hairstyle is a single curled strand that sticks out at the top, giving her a slightly whimsical appearance. Her hair is typically parted to the side, framing her face and drawing attention to her soft features.

As a student at the Asticassia School of Technology, Suletta wears the school’s standard piloting department uniform, which consists of a dark jacket with teal accents, matching shorts, and long socks. Her attire is usually neat and properly worn, reinforcing her earnest and disciplined nature.

Later in the series, during more critical operations and battles, she dons a space suit or pilot suit designed for mobile suit combat, tailored to accommodate the cockpit environment and the systems of the Gundam Aerial and later the Gundam Calibarn.

Personality and Character

Suletta Mercury is portrayed as a timid and socially awkward young woman, often struggling with communication and confidence. Her tendency to stutter, flinch in tense moments, and overreact physically or verbally can make her appear emotionally unsteady or younger than her age. Despite this, she maintains a positive outlook and makes sincere efforts to connect with others, always approaching new situations with enthusiasm and kindness. She shows deep concern for her friends and consistently tries to comfort and support them, especially in moments of distress.

While Suletta’s social anxiety causes her to be overly apologetic and self-critical, she also possesses a strong emotional core. When her friends are in trouble, she steps in without hesitation and attempts to mediate conflicts. Over time, her experiences lead her to grow more decisive, particularly in moments of danger or when piloting a mobile suit. Her shy nature is gradually counterbalanced by a firm sense of duty and compassion, allowing her to overcome trauma and emotional lows to help those around her.

Suletta often relies on the approval of others to validate her self-worth. Her need to be useful makes her vulnerable to manipulation, as she tends to overlook ulterior motives in people she trusts. One of her major aspirations is to build a school on Mercury, aimed at improving opportunities for the younger generation of her home planet. This dream reflects her desire to repay the community that shaped her and create a better future for others.

Her relationship with her mother, Prospera Mercury, is central to her emotional foundation. Suletta deeply idolizes Prospera, frequently seeking her advice and reassurance. She often refers to her mother’s motto “If you move forward, you gain two; if you run, you gain one” as a source of strength. However, this intense reliance gradually becomes a point of internal conflict, as she begins to prioritize her mother’s approval over her own needs and personal relationships, even distancing herself from close friends when consumed by doubt.

Suletta also shares a deep emotional bond with Gundam Aerial, which she regards as a sibling figure. She speaks to it as though it were a person, finding calm and clarity when piloting. Her connection to Aerial offers her a rare sense of stability in a chaotic world.

Although she becomes more assertive in combat and high-pressure scenarios, Suletta initially shows a disturbing disconnect from the consequences of violence. During mobile suit duels, she uses her GUND-Bits in aggressive, near-lethal ways, which unsettles both allies and opponents. Her willingness to harm or even kill for the sake of loved ones contrasts sharply with her usual innocence, suggesting emotional repression and a limited understanding of mortality.

Following the Plant Quetta Incident, Suletta is cut off from her former support systems, leading to a period of denial and depression. However, through the support of Earth House, she slowly regains her confidence and begins to take initiative on her own terms. She comes to understand the gravity of taking lives after witnessing the Asticassia Massacre, and this awareness marks a turning point in her growth.

Eventually, Suletta confronts the toxic aspects of her relationship with both Prospera and Aerial. Despite Prospera’s reassurances, Suletta begins questioning her mother’s teachings and intentions, especially after uncovering the truth behind her origins. She comes to realize that while there may have been elements of familial love, her well-being was never Prospera’s priority. In the end, Suletta reinterprets her mother’s mantra, declaring that she must “move forward, even if she does not gain anything”, choosing empathy and life over blind loyalty. Her journey reflects a transformation from dependence and uncertainty to emotional maturity, personal agency, and a desire to protect others on her own terms.

Skills and Abilities

Suletta Mercury is a highly skilled mobile suit pilot, particularly when operating the Gundam Aerial, with which she shares a unique connection. Despite her reserved personality, she demonstrates composure, sharp reflexes, and adaptability in combat, excelling in both mock duels and high-stakes battles. She is capable of executing advanced flight maneuvers, responding swiftly to environmental changes, and adapting to the unpredictable tactics of her opponents, even while coordinating with support from allies when necessary.

Suletta also pilots other mobile suits with competency, including the Demi Trainer, and shows agility when operating smaller vehicles such as the Asticassia scooters. Her extensive training in piloting began at a young age through the Mobile Suit Combat Simulator, which she started using at age four. By the time she was eleven, she had already gained considerable experience in real-world rescue operations on Mercury, where she often acted independently due to the isolated conditions.

One of Suletta’s greatest strengths lies in her ability to synchronize with the GUND Format and command the GUND-Bits, a weapon system embedded in the Gundam Aerial. She communicates with both Aerial and the bits directly while piloting, utilizing them for offense, defense, and strategic misdirection. Suletta is particularly effective at disarming opponents by using precision laser strikes to sever key limbs of enemy mobile suits in rapid succession. Her calm focus and instinctive coordination allow her to use these tools with high efficiency.

Suletta is capable of reaching Permet Score levels that exceed normal human limits. She has been shown to pilot the Aerial at Permet Scores 6 and 7 levels previously considered fatal without suffering immediate side effects. This ability is later explained by the presence of Ericht Samaya (Eri), whose consciousness resides within the Aerial’s control system. Eri absorbs the mental and physical strain that would otherwise afflict Suletta. However, Belmeria Winston later confirms that while Suletta lacks Eri’s perfect synchronization with Gundam systems, her near-identical genetics grant her a natural resistance to GUND-related strain. She can sustain Permet Score 5 independently for prolonged periods, though she remains susceptible to long-term side effects and is shown undergoing rehabilitation years later

In addition to her piloting expertise, Suletta displays notable physical strength and endurance. She is capable of running in low-gravity environments without losing balance, and can physically carry others to safety during emergencies. Furthermore, she is a trained fencer, able to defeat highly skilled opponents such as Guel Jeturk in close-quarters combat.

While Suletta excels in piloting and combat, her academic understanding of subjects unrelated to mobile suits is relatively limited, a result of her upbringing on Mercury. Nonetheless, she remains diligent and eager to learn, striving to improve in areas where she lacks formal education.

Legacy

Suletta Mercury stands as a transformative figure within the Gundam franchise, reshaping the archetype of a main protagonist in significant ways. As the first female lead in a mainline Gundam television anime, her character marks a historic departure from the traditionally male-centric focus of previous series. Her presence opened new narrative possibilities by exploring personal vulnerability, emotional complexity, and social themes such as identity, autonomy, and familial manipulation, all through the lens of a character who is both endearing and deeply conflicted.

Suletta’s role also broke ground in terms of LGBTQ representation within the Gundam universe. Her romantic relationship with Miorine Rembran, which progresses naturally throughout the story, has been widely praised for its depth and sincerity. This representation was viewed as a milestone in the franchise, reflecting a broader cultural shift toward inclusive storytelling in anime.

Her growth from an anxious, dependent girl to a strong, self-aware individual—has been highlighted by critics and fans alike as one of the most emotionally resonant character arcs in the Gundam franchise. Suletta’s nuanced development resonated with audiences, especially in the context of her relationship with her mother, Prospera Mercury, and the moral dilemmas surrounding her involvement in warfare.
