Sui

Sui is a character in the anime and manga series Darwin’s Game. She is one of the core members of the Sunset Ravens and stands out as the youngest member of the clan, being 11 years old before the timeskip and 16 years old after. Sui’s unique ability and personality contribute significantly to the group’s dynamics, especially due to the presence of two souls within her body: her own and that of her deceased twin brother, Souta. While Sui is kind-hearted and reserved, Souta is aggressive and violent, occasionally taking control of her body during critical situations.

Appearance in manga

Sui is a short pre-teen girl with neck-length light blue hair, which features thick strands that dangle in front, concealing one of her turquoise eyes. She has a light complexion and is most often seen wearing a pure white overcoat over a black shirt.

Following the timeskip, Sui matures into a teenager, growing her hair significantly longer, reaching down to her mid-back. However, her physical appearance remains androgynous, with no prominent development of feminine features. Some fans speculate that this lack of development may be attributed to her body housing a male soul, influencing her growth during her formative years.

Personality

Sui is kind, gentle, and soft-spoken, often hesitating to harm others unless absolutely necessary. Despite her timid nature, she is loyal and brave, willing to fight alongside her allies in the Sunset Ravens. In contrast, her brother Souta, who inhabits the same body, is hot-headed, aggressive, and unrelenting in combat. The duality between Sui and Souta adds complexity to her character, as she must navigate her brother’s actions while maintaining her own sense of self.

Role in the Story

Sui becomes a member of the Sunset Ravens after showcasing her abilities and earning Kaname Sudou’s trust. Despite her young age, her Sigil and her connection with Souta make her a valuable asset to the clan.

Sui’s abilities are pivotal in several battles throughout the series, with her brother Souta often taking control to unleash her full combat potential. Together, they provide both offensive and defensive support to the Sunset Ravens.

After the timeskip, Sui matures significantly, growing into her role as a core member of the Sunset Ravens while continuing to balance her dual-soul existence with Souta.

Relationships

  • Kaname Sudou
Sui looks up to Kaname as a leader and trusts him implicitly. She admires his strategic thinking and is motivated by his vision for reforming Darwin’s Game.

  • Sunset Ravens
Sui shares close bonds with the other members of the Sunset Ravens, who act as mentors and protectors due to her young age. Her growth is supported by their guidance and camaraderie.

  • Souta
Sui’s deceased brother inhabits her body as a second soul. Their relationship is both protective and contentious, as Souta often takes control to fight more violently, contrasting with Sui’s more pacifist approach.

Legacy

Sui’s character stands out in Darwin’s Game due to her dual-soul dynamic and significant growth throughout the series. Her journey from a timid, young player to a dependable member of the Sunset Ravens highlights her resilience and adaptability. Fans often praise her character for the emotional depth added by her relationship with Souta and the challenges of balancing two distinct personalities within one body.

Trivia

    • In the anime adaptation, Sui and Souta are voiced by Hanamori Yumiri in the Japanese version and Brittany Lauda in the English version.
      • Sui’s Sigil, “Hydrokinesis,” allows her to manipulate water, giving her both offensive and defensive capabilities in combat.
      • The coexistence of Sui and Souta in the same body is a unique feature in Darwin’s Game. This dynamic adds a psychological layer to her character and creates unpredictable moments in battles.
