Subaru Hoshina

Subaru Hoshina (保科昴, Hoshina Subaru) is a third-year student at Kikyo Private Academy and one of the main characters of Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku.

You know, I want to come to like myself. To like the Subaru Hoshina who you said you loved with all your heart. I’ve gotten involved with them just as much as you have. So… if I were to let you face the repercussions all by yourself… I could never come to truly love myself.

Subaru confronting Rintaro

Subaru is shown to be exceptionally protective toward the people she is close to, especially Kaoruko, her childhood friend and closest companion. She can be considered a tsundere, as she initially displays a hostile attitude toward Rintaro’s group during their first meeting, acting irate, harsh, and cold. Her protective nature stems from her past experiences of being bullied by boys because of her distinctive silver hair. These experiences and the bitterness that followed strengthened her distrust and resentment toward men, fueling her intense dislike of Chidori Academy, which she viewed as the complete opposite of Kikyo. Her hostility reached greater extremes than most of her classmates, as seen when she scolded both Ayumi and Suzuka about Kaoruko’s safety following a brief confrontation between Chidori students and Waguri. Subaru is serious and strong-willed when dealing with important matters, demonstrated when she asked Rintaro to stay away from Kaoruko for her sake, fearing that Kikyo’s hostility toward Chidori could bring consequences if their relationship were discovered. Despite this, she ultimately respected Rintaro’s determination to continue seeing Waguri.

Because of her past trauma and Kikyo’s ingrained prejudice toward Chidori, Subaru initially struggled to accept that her view of Chidori boys was wrong. She felt uneasy about rethinking her assumptions, even after meeting Rintaro and his friends. At first, she remained distant from them, but her opinion changed dramatically when the boys came to rescue them from a group of delinquents holding a grudge against Rintaro. Grateful for their help, Subaru gradually opened up, becoming friendlier and more understanding. She even felt deeply apologetic for her earlier hostility during their first encounter at the library.

Despite her serious, blunt, and seemingly cold exterior, Subaru is a good-hearted and genuinely kind person. This is evident in moments such as buying donuts for Saku’s birthday or looking out for Kaoruko, even accepting and keeping her relationship with Rintaro a secret. Subaru is also mature and considerate, insisting on helping Saku clean up after his birthday party despite his protests. She shows strong persuasive skills and emotional intelligence, encouraging Saku to reconcile with his former friend Hidaka and stepping out of her comfort zone to help them reconnect, even though she still feels uneasy around unfamiliar men.

As the story progresses, Subaru is shown to be somewhat socially awkward when it comes to understanding and expressing her feelings, particularly toward Natsusawa, the boy she falls in love with. She often drops unintended but obvious hints of affection that everyone, including Natsusawa, interprets as direct confessions. During a conversation with Kaoruko, Subaru breaks down in embarrassment after realizing how blatantly she had revealed her feelings.

Biography

Kaoruko interupting Subaru’s crying.

Due to her unique silver hair, Subaru was constantly bullied by boys her age, often reduced to tears by their cruelty. These painful experiences fostered a deep resentment toward boys, to the point that she despised them so much she refused to even look at them. Kaoruko became her savior, the one who shielded her from the bullies and the first person to call her hair beautiful. Kaoruko stood unwaveringly by Subaru’s side, protecting her like a rock, which led Subaru to idolize her and admire her bravery, courage, and strength.

Inspired by Kaoruko, Subaru developed a fierce determination to become just like her. Her devotion ran so deep that she was willing to endure any pain or injury in Kaoruko’s place, even if it meant risking her own life. Subaru and Kaoruko spent much of their childhood playing together in the park, sharing countless memories as they grew up. Subaru witnessed all of Kaoruko’s struggles, including her efforts to gain admission into Kikyo Academy and the challenges she faced along the way.
