Staz Charlie Blood

Staz Charlie Blood (ブラッド・チャーリー・スタズ, Sutazu Chārī Buraddo) is the main protagonist of Blood Lad. He serves as the boss of the Eastern District in the Demon World and is reputed to be an elite vampire feared by others. Contrary to this image, Staz is more of an otaku fascinated with human culture, particularly Japanese media and entertainment.

Born into a noble vampire lineage, Staz distanced himself from his heritage after running away from home. Despite his reluctance to embrace his lineage, he is an exceptionally powerful vampire. In his youth, his brother Braz forcibly awakened his latent powers, which initially caused severe side effects such as nosebleeds and fainting. To mitigate the damage, Braz sealed Staz’s abilities with a bullet lodged in his heart, intending to release them when the time was right.

Staz appears as a young male vampire, estimated to be around sixteen to eighteen years old, though he is most often regarded as being sixteen. He has medium-length black hair that falls just below his eyes, pale white skin, and bright red eyes accentuated by dark circles, suggesting chronic fatigue. His sharp, fang-like teeth further emphasize his vampiric nature.

His usual attire consists of a white dress shirt worn loosely, with one side tucked in and the other untucked, paired with charcoal gray pants, a gray belt, and plain white shoes. Standing at approximately 5’10” (178 cm) with a lean but toned build, he possesses considerable strength despite his relatively modest physique. A notable feature is his right arm, which is burned and darkened from the strain of overheating his body; he typically conceals it beneath white bandages, only unwrapping it during combat.

Personality

Staz is portrayed as rebellious and laid-back, often preferring to spend his time reading manga or indulging in human-world hobbies while leaving responsibilities to others. Despite this outward laziness, he becomes highly determined and focused once he commits to a goal. Although he has few close companions, he demonstrates deep loyalty to those he considers important.

His extraordinary strength is viewed by Staz as a personal burden. During his childhood, his older brother Braz subjected him to repeated experiments and torture to forcibly awaken his latent abilities, an experience that left lasting psychological scars. As one of the most powerful demons in the Eastern District, he is also a frequent target for challengers seeking to claim his territory.

Beyond his role as a vampire and district boss, Staz is characterized by his fascination with human culture. He has a particular fondness for manga, anime, and Japanese cuisine, especially sashimi and sushi, which reinforce his image as an otaku within the Demon World.

History

As a child, Staz trained under his elder brother, Braz D. Blood. Although Braz was impressed by his younger brother’s extraordinary potential, he also recognized the dangers of Staz’s prematurely awakened powers, which his body could not handle without suffering harm. To suppress this, Braz shot Staz with a magical bullet, sealing his abilities within his heart. Believing this act to be an attempt on his life, Staz grew resentful of Braz over the years, unaware that the seal had been intended to protect him until he matured.

Staz’s story begins when Yanagi Fuyumi, a human girl, is brought to his room. Instantly fascinated by her humanity and blood, he becomes determined to befriend her. However, Fuyumi is soon devoured by a carnivorous plant and reduced to a ghost, losing her human form. Realizing he no longer craves her blood, Staz instead vows to protect her and dedicate himself to restoring her life. To sustain her spirit, he allows her to drink his blood and serves as her guardian while seeking a way to revive her.

In pursuit of this goal, Staz confronts his brother Braz for answers about human resurrection. Braz agrees to explain on the condition that Staz defeats the powerful demon Pantomime. Initially overwhelmed, Staz regains access to his sealed abilities after Braz releases the magical bullet, enabling him to achieve victory.

Later in the series, the Hydra family compels Staz to swear an oath to help Fuyumi regain her humanity. Bound by this vow, he commits to following her will until a method of restoring her life is discovered.

Powers and Abilities

As a vampire from a noble demon lineage, Staz possesses immense strength and magical potential. Even in his youth, he demonstrated extraordinary abilities, such as compressing a five-meter boulder into the size of a pebble. Though his brother Braz sealed his powers during childhood, Staz remained strong enough to maintain control over his territory without difficulty. Once the seal was lifted, his full capabilities were revealed.

Demonic Power
Staz’s magic manifests as a giant spectral hand marked with circular patterns along its joints and palm. He can wield this construct offensively to strike or restrain opponents, and defensively or practically as a platform for travel. His demonic energy can also be projected at long range, enabling him to strike enemies directly or alter the battlefield by generating powerful eruptions of energy.

Special Techniques

  • Heart Constriction: ZIP – Staz channels his energy into an opponent’s vital organs, typically the heart, then crushes it remotely by closing his fist.

  • Chew-Chew Drain: Staz restrains his opponent, bites into their neck or shoulder, and leaves behind a fang that acts as a conduit to siphon demonic energy. After his full powers were restored, he could drain energy directly without relying on this method, as seen in his battle against Team Fearless.

  • Playback Payback: A two-stage technique in which Staz launches his opponent skyward with an uppercut before summoning a mass of energy above them, striking downward to send them crashing into the ground.

  • Vampire Tetsuzanko: Staz channels his magic into a devastating shoulder strike, powerful enough to hurl enemies through multiple buildings, demonstrated in his clash with Akim.

  • Final ZIP: An enhanced version of Heart Constriction: ZIP, unleashed while he and Fuyumi temporarily shared a hybrid form, used to defeat Grimm in his final state.

Physical Abilities
Staz exhibits high levels of strength, speed, and durability, capable of overpowering seasoned demons and evading advanced attacks with ease. Following training with White Step alongside Wolf, his reflexes and combat awareness improved significantly, granting him sharper predictive abilities in battle.

Regeneration
Like other high-level vampires, Staz can recover rapidly from injuries, including deep lacerations, blunt force trauma, and bullet wounds. However, his regenerative capacity is notably weakened when exposed to silver.

Equipment

Spray Bottle
During his visit to the Human World, Staz improvises a method to extend his vampiric powers without resorting to biting. By filling a spray bottle with his saliva, he gains the ability to control individuals upon contact. This technique allows him to manipulate their actions, thoughts, and even alter their memories, providing a discreet alternative to traditional vampiric influence.

Weaknesses

Like traditional vampires, Staz is vulnerable to silver, which significantly hinders his regenerative abilities and leaves him more susceptible to sustained attacks.

Another limitation stems from his personality and worldview. Staz is described by those close to him as a “hard-core otaku,” relying heavily on knowledge drawn from manga and other human media to interpret unfamiliar situations. While this occasionally provides creative ideas, it also leaves him emotionally and socially inexperienced. As a result, he struggles to understand the feelings of others, particularly the advances of Fuyumi or Bell, and often fails to formulate practical strategies. In battle, he sometimes imitates the fighting styles of fictional characters, which can undermine his effectiveness against real opponents.
