Sōta Mizushino

Sōta Mizushino (水篠 颯太, Mizushino Sōta), is the narrator and protagonist of Re:Creators. A second-year high school student, his ordinary life is forever changed when he unexpectedly meets Selesia Upitiria, the protagonist of his favorite anime. When she rescues him from the mysterious Altair, Sōta reveals to her the truth that she is a fictional character who has come to life in the real world. With this revelation, Sōta and Selesia become key figures in the battle to unite other fictional characters and prevent their worlds from being destroyed.

Unlike many protagonists in similar “fictional characters in the real world” stories, Sōta is not a fighter, nor does he possess special abilities. Instead, his strength lies in his understanding of creation, storytelling, and his connection to Altair, which makes him a crucial figure in uncovering the mysteries behind the world-changing event. As he comes to terms with his past actions and guilt, Sōta gradually gains confidence in himself, proving that even an ordinary person can play an extraordinary role in shaping a story’s fate.

Background

Appearance in anime

Sōta was an aspiring artist and writer, with a passion for anime, manga, and storytelling. Though he admired content creators, he struggled with self-doubt, often feeling inferior to those around him. His inability to express himself confidently led him to repress his emotions, making him hesitant to take initiative in both his creative ambitions and personal relationships.

His involvement in the Altair incident stems from his past connection with Setsuna Shimazaki, a talented artist he once knew. Due to his insecurities and fear of being overshadowed, he distanced himself from Setsuna and failed to support her when she needed him most. Her tragic fate and the rise of Altair became a turning point in his life, forcing him to confront his regrets and take responsibility for the consequences of his inaction.

When fictional characters start appearing in the real world, Sōta is initially overwhelmed, unsure of his place in the unfolding events. However, as he learns the truth about Altair’s origins, he realizes that he is one of the few who can truly stop her, making him an indispensable part of the struggle to restore balance between reality and fiction.

Appearance

Sōta is a slim-built high school student with short brown hair and green eyes, reflecting his average, unassuming nature. His casual and modest clothing further emphasizes his status as a seemingly ordinary individual. Compared to the more vibrant and uniquely designed fictional characters around him, Sōta’s appearance highlights his role as a grounded, realistic protagonist in contrast to the larger-than-life figures who have entered his world.

Personality

Sōta is reserved, thoughtful, and deeply introspective, often struggling with self-worth and confidence. His shyness and fear of confrontation prevent him from asserting himself, leading to moments of hesitation and regret. Unlike traditional protagonists, Sōta does not possess natural leadership qualities or heroic bravery, making his character arc one of personal growth and emotional redemption.

Though he is not a warrior, Sōta is empathetic and perceptive, showing a deep understanding of human emotions and storytelling. His ability to analyze narratives and fictional characters allows him to become a key strategist, helping the group uncover the deeper mechanics behind their reality-warping situation. Over time, he learns to embrace his role, using his knowledge and creativity to help shape the battle against Altair.

Sōta’s greatest struggle is his guilt his past actions indirectly led to Setsuna’s downfall, and he wrestles with the pain of failing to support her when she needed him most. However, his journey toward redemption is what defines him, as he ultimately chooses to face his past mistakes and play an active role in saving both the real and fictional worlds.

Role in the Story

  • Encounter with Selesia and the Arrival of Fictional Characters
Sōta’s story begins when he witnesses an anime battle unfolding before his eyes, only to be dragged into the fight himself. He meets Selesia Upitiria, one of his favorite characters, and reveals the truth—that she is fictional and has somehow been brought into reality. As more characters from various media begin appearing, Sōta becomes one of the few real-world individuals capable of bridging the gap between reality and fiction.

  • Unraveling the Mystery of Altair
As the conflict escalates, Sōta realizes that Altair, the mysterious antagonist, is actually a creation born from Setsuna Shimazaki’s grief and despair. His personal connection to Setsuna and her tragic fate makes him the only one who fully understands Altair’s motivations, placing him at the center of the effort to stop her destruction. Though initially overcome with guilt and fear, Sōta gradually gathers the courage to face Altair, using his knowledge of storytelling to devise a plan to counter her limitless power.

  • Creating a New Ending for Altair
Instead of relying on combat, Sōta recognizes that Altair’s existence is fueled by the audience’s perception. Using his creativity and storytelling skills, he collaborates with the other creators to alter her narrative, ultimately leading to a peaceful resolution rather than outright destruction. His ability to understand the emotional core of stories and characters becomes the key to preventing the end of both the real and fictional worlds. Through this journey, Sōta redeems himself for his past mistakes, proving that even an ordinary person can play an extraordinary role in shaping the fate of reality.

Relationships

Selesia Upitiria
Selesia is the first fictional character Sōta encounters, and she becomes one of his closest allies. Though she initially struggles to accept her existence as a fictional creation, Sōta’s insight and support help her find her own sense of purpose. Their dynamic is one of mutual growth, as Selesia teaches Sōta how to be braver, while Sōta helps her understand the complexities of her existence.

Setsuna Shimazaki / Altair
Setsuna was a talented artist and Sōta’s former friend, but due to Sōta’s insecurities, he distanced himself from her, failing to support her when she faced harsh criticism and bullying. Setsuna’s eventual suicide led to the birth of Altair, a vengeful creation born from grief and resentment. Throughout Re:Creators, Sōta grapples with his guilt over what happened to Setsuna, ultimately choosing to confront Altair and make amends for his past mistakes.

Other Fictional Characters
As Sōta helps gather various characters from different stories, he begins to form friendships and alliances with them. Though he is initially seen as weak and insignificant, his understanding of storytelling and creativity proves invaluable in helping them navigate the real world and find a way to defeat Altair.

    Legacy

      • Sōta Mizushino may not be a warrior or a chosen hero, but his understanding of stories and human emotions makes him the heart of Re:Creators. • His story is one of guilt, growth, and the power of creation, demonstrating that the real strength of a creator lies in their ability to inspire change, both in fiction and reality.
