Sorata Kanda

Sorata Kanda (神田 空太, Kanda Sorata) is the male protagonist of The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. He is a second-year student at Suiko University of Arts and resides in Room 101 of the Sakura Dormitory. Sorata is transferred to the dorm after being expelled from the standard school dormitory for refusing to give up a stray white cat he had taken in. Surrounded by exceptionally talented peers in both academics and the arts, Sorata often sees himself as ordinary in comparison. He is later assigned by Chihiro Sengoku to take care of Mashiro Shiina’s daily needs, a task he initially resents but gradually comes to embrace as he forms a bond with her.

Personality

Sorata sees himself as an average and unremarkable person, especially when compared to the gifted residents of the Sakura Dormitory. Initially overwhelmed by his peers’ exceptional talents, he struggles with feelings of inadequacy. However, his encounter with Mashiro Shiina becomes a turning point in his life, inspiring him to pursue his own goals and eventually set his sights on becoming a game designer.

In the early part of the story, Sorata is portrayed as indecisive and uncertain about his future, a trait that frustrates both his father and his friend Jin. Over time, he matures emotionally, gradually gaining clarity and confidence in his aspirations. His growing sense of purpose is closely tied to the support and influence of those around him.

Sorata is also notably kind-hearted and compassionate, often to a fault. He has a strong instinct to care for others, as shown through his habit of rescuing stray cats. His tendency to bring home animals seven in total, named Hikari, Nozomi, Kodama, Tsubasa, Komachi, Aoba, and Asahi ultimately leads to his removal from the standard dormitories, which do not allow pets. Though he can be short-tempered with Mashiro, often scolding her when frustrated, his actions are generally driven by concern and responsibility.

Appearance

Sorata is a teenage boy of average height and build. He has short, spiky light brown hair and matching light brown eyes. He is most commonly seen in his school uniform throughout the series. While he considers himself plain, several characters have noted that he is, in fact, quite handsome.

Background

During his elementary and junior high years, Sorata played soccer but eventually quit after losing his passion for the sport. This early experience contributed to his feelings of uncertainty about his future, which persisted until he found new inspiration at Sakura Dormitory.

Relationships

Mashiro Shiina
Sorata serves as Mashiro’s caretaker, helping her navigate daily life due to her lack of practical skills. Initially, Sorata feels insecure around Mashiro, viewing her as another prodigy whose brilliance highlights his own mediocrity. However, as he spends more time with her, she becomes a source of inspiration, helping him find purpose and passion in his own life.

Despite his frustrations with Mashiro’s quirks and social awkwardness, Sorata finds her endearing and gradually grows more protective of her. At times, this overprotectiveness leads to conflicts, such as when Mashiro tries to express her feelings for him through cooking, and Sorata reacts harshly out of concern. Over time, their bond deepens, and Sorata comes to see Mashiro as someone precious to him. In the anime, he confesses his feelings to her as she prepares to leave by train and attempts to kiss her, though it ends in a kiss on the cheek.

Nanami Aoyama
Nanami is one of Sorata’s closest friends, and the two have been classmates since their first year. She first befriends Sorata after he picks up a stray cat, helping him find homes for his pets. Sorata admires Nanami’s relentless work ethic and often encourages her in her pursuit to become a voice actress. He is concerned by her tendency to overwork herself and offers her emotional support throughout her struggles.

Although Nanami has romantic feelings for Sorata, she is unable to confess them. After graduating, both attend Suimei University, where they occasionally cross paths. Despite their romantic tension, they remain close friends.

Jin Mitaka
Jin is one of Sorata’s most trusted confidants at Sakura Dormitory. The two often discuss their personal dilemmas and provide each other with advice. Although Sorata initially sees Jin as a playboy, he gradually comes to understand him better and appreciates his maturity and insight.

Misaki Kamiigusa
Misaki is the first friend Sorata makes after moving into Sakura Dormitory. He tolerates her hyperactive personality and often plays video games with her. Sorata deeply respects Misaki’s talent and cares for her well-being, notably intervening when she and Jin are not speaking. He addresses her respectfully as “senpai,” while she affectionately refers to him as “Kouhai-kun.” Misaki also delivers a heartfelt speech about Sorata and the other dorm members in the final chapters.

Ryuunosuke Akasaka
Sorata and Ryuunosuke share similar interests, with Sorata aspiring to be a game designer and Ryuunosuke working as a programmer. Though Ryuunosuke avoids face-to-face interaction, the two often communicate online and collaborate on projects. Sorata is occasionally shocked by Ryuunosuke’s bluntness and behavior, such as installing spyware on his phone without permission. After graduation, the two live together in a small house near Sakurasou, where they establish a game studio to pursue their dream of developing games.

Chihiro Sengoku
Sorata sees Chihiro, the teacher in charge of Sakura Dormitory and Mashiro’s cousin, as irresponsible and eccentric. Despite her lax attitude and frequent romantic escapades, Sorata eventually becomes accustomed to her personality and often runs errands for her without complaint. He sometimes teases her for her flashy outfits and casual attitude toward her duties.

Yuuko Kanda
Yuuko is Sorata’s younger sister. While she is affectionate toward him, Sorata often finds her annoying and overwhelming. He even jokes about wanting divine intervention to “cure her stupidity.” Nonetheless, he cares deeply for her, as shown when he searches for her after she gets lost and supports her desire to take entrance exams at Suiko.

Rita Ainsworth
Rita was Mashiro’s former caretaker before Sorata. When she visits Japan and is rejected by Mashiro, Sorata lets her stay in his room. Though not particularly close, Sorata acknowledges Rita as an important member of the dorm, especially for her role in contributing to the Nyaboron project. After returning to England, Rita remains in contact with Sorata via email.
