Appearance in manga

Snake is a unique and striking character with an appearance that reflects both his human nature and his affinity for snakes. He has pale skin that is interspersed with scales, a feature that marks his unusual heritage. His golden eyes are another distinctive feature, adding to his otherworldly appearance. Snake’s hair is short and white, with a cowlick that trembles when he is nervous and straightens when startled, giving him an almost animated quality. He also possesses a forked tongue, which further emphasizes his snake-like traits. He is rarely seen without at least one of his snakes, which often accompanies him, further tying him to his unique nature.

As the footman of the Phantomhive household, Snake typically wears a suit that is polished yet practical for his role, complete with a low vest and a ribbon in place of a tie, which adds a touch of formality to his appearance. His outfit is a bit more subdued compared to his past attire, but it still maintains a sense of refinement befitting his role as a servant to the Phantomhive family.

Before joining the Phantomhive household, Snake was a member of Noah’s Ark Circus. His circus attire was more flamboyant, reflecting the colorful and theatrical nature of his life in the circus. He wore a high-collared jacket with baggy sleeves that covered his hands, creating an almost mystic aura. His striped black-and-white shirt beneath the jacket was cinched at the waist and neck by belts, and he wore thigh-high boots that added to his distinct look. When he ventured from the circus camp, he would drape a solid-colored cape over his shoulders, further enhancing his mysterious and dramatic appearance. His ensemble was a visual reflection of his place in the circus, setting him apart as an enigmatic figure with a deep connection to his snakes and his past.

Personality

Snake is a timid and reserved individual, often choosing to remain silent and speak only when necessary. He tends to communicate through his snakes, using them as a medium to relay information, which reflects his quiet and somewhat withdrawn nature. His shyness is something that is noticed by others, including Joker, who mentions that Snake, along with his snakes, is shy. Despite his reserved demeanor, Snake’s snakes can sometimes be playful. In one instance, Snake used his snake Emily to flirt with Dagger, showing that he does have a lighthearted side, though it’s often overshadowed by his more introverted personality.

Snake is also deeply self-conscious about his physical appearance, particularly the scales on his skin. He worries about being ridiculed for looking different from others, which is part of the reason he tends to keep to himself. His insecurities about his appearance reveal a more vulnerable side to his character, one that contrasts with his otherwise reserved and composed exterior.

Despite his reticence, Snake is very loyal and caring towards those he considers close to him. Although he doesn’t refer to the other members of the Noah’s Ark Circus as brothers or sisters like they do among themselves, he holds them in high regard. They treated him with kindness and respect, despite his appearance, and he appreciates their companionship deeply. Snake’s affection for the members of the first-string group is evident, even though he didn’t always accompany them on missions.

After being taken in by Ciel Phantomhive, Snake’s loyalty shifted to the Phantomhive household. He became just as devoted to Ciel as the other servants, demonstrating the same fierce loyalty and commitment. However, even as a member of the Phantomhive staff, Snake continues to hold a hope in his heart that one day he will be reunited with his old circus family, reflecting his deep-seated desire for connection and belonging.

History

Snake’s early life was marked by hardship, as he was kept in a freak show, likely due to his unique appearance—specifically his scales and forked tongue. Being put on display in such a setting likely added to his insecurities about his appearance and contributed to his reserved personality. The circumstances surrounding his captivity are unclear, but his time in the freak show left him in a vulnerable position, both physically and emotionally.

However, Snake’s life took a turn when he was rescued by the other members of the Noah’s Ark Circus, particularly the first-string performers. These individuals treated him with kindness and acceptance, something that was crucial in helping Snake feel like he belonged somewhere. As a result, Snake became a member of the first-string group, performing as a snake charmer. This role allowed him to utilize his unique abilities, with his snakes becoming a key part of his performances.

Though he did not refer to them as “family,” Snake clearly held a deep appreciation for the circus members, who accepted him despite his unusual appearance. Over time, they treated him like one of their own, and he became loyal to them. Eventually, after his time with the circus, Snake was taken in by Ciel Phantomhive, where his loyalty would shift to the Phantomhive household, though he continued to hold a hope of reuniting with his circus family in the future.
