Smoker

Smoker the White Hunter, is a Marine vice admiral and the commander of the G-5 Marine Branch’s Unit 01, as well as the base commander of the G-5 Marine base following the betrayal of his former superior, Vergo. First introduced as a captain in Loguetown, Smoker made it his mission to capture Monkey D. Luffy, establishing himself as a recurring adversary. Over the course of the series, his actions and interactions with Luffy have evolved from rivalry to reluctant cooperation.

Appearance in Anime

Smoker’s career in the Marines began long before his introduction in Loguetown, where he was stationed as a captain. His steadfast belief in justice and his relentless pursuit of pirates earned him a fearsome reputation, particularly for his use of the Moku Moku no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to control, create, and transform into smoke.

Following his initial confrontation with Luffy in Loguetown, Smoker’s role within the Marines grew significantly. His actions during the Arabasta Arc, where he was recognized for his pursuit of Crocodile’s downfall, led to his promotion to commodore. Eventually, he was reassigned to the G-5 Marine Branch, where he became its commander after the exposure of Vergo’s treachery.

Appearance

Smoker is a tall, muscular man with short, white hair and a rugged demeanor. His signature attire includes a long, white, fur-lined Marine coat draped over his shoulders like a cape and a pair of dark trousers. He is often seen smoking multiple cigars simultaneously, which adds to his intimidating appearance. Smoker carries a large jitte with a Seastone tip, a weapon that he uses to combat Devil Fruit users.

Personality

Smoker is a no-nonsense Marine officer with an unwavering commitment to justice. Unlike some of his peers, he prioritizes his own moral compass over blind obedience to orders, often clashing with the corrupt practices within the Marines and the World Government. While his pursuit of pirates is relentless, Smoker is not inherently cruel, demonstrating respect for those he deems honorable, including Luffy.

His relationship with Tashigi reflects his mentorship style, as he guides her in her development as a Marine while showing a protective side toward her. Despite his gruff exterior, Smoker’s actions often reveal a deep sense of fairness and a desire to uphold true justice.

Role in the Story

Loguetown Arc
Smoker first appears in Loguetown, where he attempts to capture Luffy as the latter prepares to set sail for the Grand Line. His pursuit introduces him as a formidable Marine opponent, but Luffy narrowly escapes thanks to the intervention of Monkey D. Dragon. Smoker’s determination to capture Luffy marks the beginning of their rivalry.

Arabasta Arc
In the Arabasta Arc, Smoker pursues the Straw Hats and Crocodile, unknowingly aligning with Luffy’s mission to save the kingdom. Although initially at odds with Luffy, Smoker acknowledges the pirate’s efforts after Crocodile’s defeat. His actions during this arc earn him a promotion to commodore, though he expresses disdain for the recognition, believing it unjust.

Punk Hazard Arc
During the Punk Hazard Arc, Smoker forms a temporary alliance with Luffy and the Straw Hats to combat the greater threats posed by Vergo and Caesar Clown. This alliance highlights Smoker’s pragmatic nature and willingness to set aside his rivalry with Luffy when necessary. His clash with Vergo exposes corruption within the Marines, further cementing his position as a figure of moral integrity.

Marineford Arc
In the Marineford Arc, Smoker takes part in the Summit War but plays a relatively minor role. His attempts to capture Luffy are thwarted by Boa Hancock, showcasing the limitations of his pursuit during large-scale battles.

Relationships

  • Monkey D. Luffy
Smoker serves as a recurring rival to Luffy, consistently pursuing him across the seas. Despite their antagonistic dynamic, Smoker shows respect for Luffy’s resolve and occasionally aligns with him against common enemies.

  • Tashigi
As Tashigi’s superior and mentor, Smoker demonstrates a protective and guiding role, often encouraging her growth while ensuring her safety.

  • Vergo
Smoker’s former superior at G-5, Vergo’s betrayal during the Punk Hazard Arc solidifies Smoker’s distrust of corruption within the Marines. Their confrontation is a pivotal moment in Smoker’s career.

  • Marines
Smoker’s relationships within the Marines are often strained due to his independent nature and disdain for corruption, setting him apart from more rigid officers.

      • Smoker’s fur-lined Marine coat and dual cigars are iconic elements of his design, reflecting his tough and rebellious demeanor.
