Sigma

Sigma (シグマ, Shiguma) is a former member of the Decay of the Angel and the general manager of the Sky Casino, a floating establishment central to the organization’s operations. Known for his resourcefulness and adaptability, Sigma plays a pivotal role in the events surrounding the Decay of the Angel’s schemes.

Personality

Appearance in Anime

Sigma is portrayed as a kind and considerate individual, particularly toward his customers at the Sky Casino. This is exemplified when he invalidated a game to give a customer another chance, demonstrating his fairness and dedication to maintaining a positive environment. He also exhibits a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for the casino. During a conversation with Teruko Okura, when she suggested closing the casino, Sigma firmly refused and questioned who would compensate for the lost revenue and damaged reputation. He emphasized that the casino is his life and that he values his customers deeply.

Sigma maintains an air of confidence and composure, especially in front of his staff, giving the impression of a capable and ideal casino manager. However, when left alone, he reveals his insecurities, admitting that he lacks confidence in his abilities due to his perceived absence of natural talent. This duality highlights his struggles to fulfill his role despite his internal doubts.

Sigma’s lack of memories, family, and friends profoundly shapes his character. His greatest wish is to find a reason to live, making him a deeply desperate and implacable individual, as described by Fyodor Dostoevsky. His desperation drives much of his actions, seeking purpose in an existence devoid of personal connections and a clear past.

Appearance

Sigma is a young man with a striking and unique appearance. His long, straight hair reaches down to his waist, with sections styled in loose spikes and parted down the middle of his face. The hair is dual-colored, with the left side being lilac and the right side white, further enhancing his distinctive look. He has grayish eyes and wears earrings in both ears, adding to his stylish and enigmatic presence.

Sigma’s attire is equally notable. He is often seen wearing a long white coat paired with black pants. The interior of his coat features a sparkly, galactic design, giving it a celestial and otherworldly appearance that complements his character’s mysterious aura.

Background

Sigma was born from the Book, written into existence rather than through conventional means. When he first opened his eyes, he found himself in a vast, empty desert, greeted by nothingness. He had no possessions aside from the clothes on his back and a train ticket from a station that does not exist. Confused and aimless, Sigma wandered through the barren desert until he was captured by an armed group. While imprisoned, he discovered his Gift, which his captors exploited for their own gain. Eventually, Sigma managed to escape but continued to wander the world with a nihilistic outlook, lacking a purpose or understanding of his existence.

At some point, Sigma was approached by Fyodor Dostoevsky, who invited him to join the Decay of the Angel. Upon agreeing, Sigma was assigned the responsibility of overseeing the Sky Casino. Over time, he grew to love this role, as it provided him with a sense of purpose and belonging.

During his time with the Decay of the Angel, Sigma obtained critical information about the location of the “page” from the Book. This occurred after he confronted and attacked Santōka Taneda, the director of the Special Division for Unusual Powers, using his ability. However, Sigma later claimed that the attack was merely a threat and that he had no intention of causing harm.

Ability

Sigma’s ability allows him to exchange information with anyone he touches. This exchange involves both parties sharing specific personal information. While Sigma provides the individual with the details they wish to know, he simultaneously gains access to the information he desires. This unique ability makes Sigma an invaluable resource for uncovering secrets and acquiring critical intelligence.

Skills

Sigma demonstrates strong leadership abilities as the manager of the Sky Casino, effectively delegating tasks among his subordinates and ensuring that customer needs are met with efficiency and care. His management skills reflect his dedication to maintaining the casino’s high standards and smooth operations. In addition to his leadership, Sigma possesses an exceptional memory, allowing him to recall the names and traits of up to 20,000 guests. This remarkable memorization stems from his commitment to preserving the casino’s reputation and success, as he has diligently retained knowledge about the Sky Casino and its patrons to prevent any loss or decline. His sense of responsibility and determination to protect what he values are evident in his meticulous approach to his role.

Etymology

The name Sigma is derived from the eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet (Σ, σ). In mathematics, the symbol Σ is commonly used to represent the concept of “sum,” reflecting accumulation or the total of various elements.

Trivia

Sigma’s heterochromatic eyes (one blue and one purple) symbolize his unique nature as an artificial creation and his struggle with identity.

His role as the manager of the Sky Casino ties into themes of luck, chance, and control, reflecting the broader motifs of unpredictability and manipulation in Bungo Stray Dogs.

Sigma’s name, derived from the Greek letter Σ, often represents summation or the unknown, aligning with his mysterious origins and undefined past.

Despite being a construct of The Book, Sigma displays a deeply human desire for recognition and belonging, making him a relatable and sympathetic character.
