Appearance
Shun has medium-length, unkempt auburn hair. His bangs are especially long and hide his slate-blue eyes, which were not visible until the Stagiaire event. Shun rarely shows expressions, as the only way he visually conveys emotion is through subtle movements of his mouth.
He has a lean, slender build but possesses impressive physical strength. This is demonstrated by his ability to carry large wooden logs, which he uses to create smoking woodchips, with apparent ease, while Daigo, who has a much bulkier body, struggles to carry one of equal size.
Shun wears the standard Tōtsuki uniform that corresponds with the current season. When he cooks, he dons a pure white chef’s uniform.
Personality
Compared to the other residents of the Polar Star Dormitory, Shun is less energetic. He does not speak much, but when he does, he speaks bluntly and flatly. While most of his fellow residents and classmates may get worked up when something bad happens, Shun remains calm and collected to avoid making mistakes. Despite his composed demeanor, Shun strives to be the best in the academy and tends to sulk whenever he loses. He is often annoyed by the impulsiveness of his dormmates, but he genuinely cares about their well-being. Overall, Shun can be described as a realist who accepts things as they are.
Among all the residents in the dormitory, Shun seems to know the most about the enigmatic Satoshi Isshiki, recognizing that the dish Satoshi served Sōma during his welcoming party was not one of his ace dishes.
History
Polar Star’s Newest Resident
Shun entered the Polar Star Dormitory sometime before the beginning of the series. After the first day of school, he returned to the dormitory just as the newest Tōtsuki transfer student, Sōma Yukihira, arrived. While practicing his cooking in his room, Shun accidentally released a large plume of smoke when opening his door, prompting Fumio Daimidō, the dorm mother, to scold him. Later that night, after Sōma earned his place in the dorm, Shun joined several residents in Zenji’s room to welcome him.
Eventually, most of the residents fell asleep, but Shun woke up just as Sōma was challenged by Satoshi Isshiki, a second-year student and the 7th Seat of the Elite Ten Council. When Yūki Yoshino and Ryōko Sakaki woke up during the duel, Shun explained the situation to them and calmly observed the match as Sōma’s Revamped Mackerel Onigiri Chazuke earned Satoshi’s respect.
Training Camp
Some time later, after Sōma’s first Shokugeki, Shun was chopping firewood for his smoke cooking when Yūki gave Sōma a tour of the Polar Star Garden. After finishing, Shun joined the others to work in the garden under Satoshi’s guidance. That evening, the first years received a notice announcing their next challenge: the Tōtsuki Friendship and Rapport Training Camp. Though many worried about the camp’s reputation for expelling students, Sōma’s enthusiasm lifted everyone’s spirits. With Satoshi’s confidence behind them, the Polar Star members prepared for the challenge ahead.
At the resort, Shun and his friends were amazed by its luxury. They attended an introduction from Gin Dōjima, head of the Tōtsuki Hospitality Division, who revealed that the camp’s proctors were all alumni. Throughout the camp, Shun endured every assignment, including the Egg Breakfast Buffet Challenge, and passed each one. On the final day, after preparing a grand feast for the 628 successful students, he and the others returned to Tōtsuki.
