Shuan is a character in the anime and manga series Children of the Whales. He serves as the leader of the Vigilante Corps, a group established to maintain order and protect the peace aboard the Mud Whale. Known for his strength and stoic presence, Shuan plays a critical role in defending the island’s inhabitants from external threats.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Shuan is widely regarded as the strongest thymia user on the Mud Whale, even among the elite ranks of the Vigilante Corps. He is typically seen wearing a smile, but his true emotions remain concealed, making him a deeply enigmatic figure. Due to his childhood fusion with the numerous souls of the Nous Falaina, Shuan struggles to distinguish between his own emotions and those of others. This emotional confusion leads to a profound distrust of his own identity. Unable to determine whether the feelings he experiences are truly his, he chooses to suppress emotional expression altogether.
Despite his seemingly detached nature, Shuan is intensely loyal to the Mud Whale. He believes that if he fails to protect it, the pain and hardship he has endured over the past 17 years will have been meaningless. This loyalty stands in contrast to his apparent indifference toward his own survival an attitude that only shifts when he confronts the prospect of death during the events on Amonlogia. He also shows concern for his mother, Elder Rasha, especially after she is injured in the same incident.
While he appears emotionally restrained, Suou observes in Volume 14 that Shuan feels more deeply than he shows. A glimpse into his private life reveals his lingering grief over the loss of his wife, Sienna. His quarters aboard the Mud Whale have remained in disarray since her death, subtly indicating the presence of unresolved sorrow and depression.
Appearance
Shuan has short blond hair and typically wears a distinctive black eyepatch featuring a circular design. The eye concealed beneath the eyepatch is an unnatural red, while his other eye usually kept closed is light blue when visible. As a member of the Vigilante Corps, he wears a long black shirt styled in the Corps’ uniform design, paired with black pants and a red-and-gold coat layered over his outfit.
In the manga, Shuan’s left eye is depicted as red. His attire includes a long brown coat similar in style to his earlier uniform. After resigning from the Vigilante Corps, his wardrobe changes to reflect a simpler, more subdued style: a black shirt with white stitching worn over a plain white shirt, replacing the formal Corps uniform.
History
Shuan was born a cheerful and affectionate child, sharing a close bond with his mother, Rasha, who was one of the Unmarked. Distressed by her son’s limited lifespan as one of the Marked, Rasha influenced the elders of the Mud Whale to undertake a radical experiment in the hope of extending or preserving his existence.
At the age of nine, the elders approved a plan to fuse Shuan with the souls of the Noús Falaina in an effort to artificially create a Daimonas, a powerful being fused with Nous energy. Before undergoing the procedure, Shuan was told to remember who he was and was then taken to Midén’s chamber, a hidden room within the Mud Whale. There, the collective lives and consciousness of the Nous were forcibly merged into his mind.
The experience left Shuan deeply traumatized. He lost his sense of self and became plagued by a continuous stream of foreign thoughts and emotions, making it nearly impossible for him to discern his own identity. This event marked a drastic shift in his personality, leaving him emotionally fractured and often questioning the value of his life. Following the fusion, he became increasingly withdrawn, burdened by intrusive thoughts and developing a casual indifference toward his own mortality.
Relationships
Sienna
Sienna was Shuan’s wife, though their relationship was strained and marked by emotional distance. Shuan often failed to understand her feelings and unintentionally displayed a cold, detached attitude toward her. Before the second assault by Skyros, he even suggested that she end her own life to avoid leaving behind a displeasing corpse, a statement reflecting his emotional numbness rather than cruelty. Despite this, Sienna’s death affected him more deeply than he was willing to admit. Shuan represses his grief, often attributing his feelings to the multitude of souls fused within him rather than accepting them as his own. After her death, he is seen lashing out in frustration, crying in isolation, and allowing his living space to fall into disarray clear signs of unresolved mourning. He later has a vision of Sienna while on the verge of death on Amonlogia.
Suou
Shuan views Suou as someone worth protecting, much like the Mud Whale itself. Though he finds some of Suou’s more naive tendencies amusing once jokingly remarking that Suou has a brain “full of flower floof”, he remains fiercely loyal to him. Shuan often wishes Suou would adopt a more pragmatic mindset but does not question his authority and follows his orders without hesitation.
Ouni
Shuan recognizes Ouni’s potential as a daimonas and tries to guide him, albeit in a harsh and counterproductive manner. His blunt remarks about Ouni’s powers and nature often intensify the younger boy’s insecurities and fear of abandonment. Despite this rocky start, the two begin to develop a connection over time, bonding through their shared daimonas status and growing mutual understanding.
