Shu Ogata

Shu Ogata (緒方 シュウ, Ogata Shū), is the main male protagonist of the anime series Engage Kiss. He is the founder and operator of the small-scale Private Military Company (PMC) “I&S Office” (Isamu & Shu Office), which specializes in demon extermination missions in the city of Bayron. Once a member of the prestigious PMC AAA Defender Co., Shu left the organization two years before the start of the story and now works independently with his partner, Kisara, a demon girl who plays a central role in both his personal and professional life.

Shu is notorious within the demon-hunting industry for his unconventional methods and for undercutting contracts by bidding far lower than his competitors. While his determination and skill are undeniable, his reckless business practices have left him financially unstable, struggling to cover even his most basic living expenses. Despite this, Shu remains focused on his ultimate goal one that ties deeply into the mystery of the city’s demonic outbreaks and his own tragic past.

Appearance in anime

Originally working for AAA Defender Co., a powerful PMC that handled high-level demon-related operations, Shu Ogata was once considered a rising star in the field. However, following a traumatic and unresolved incident involving a demon attack and the loss of his family, Shu abruptly left the organization. He then founded the I&S Office, a smaller and much less funded agency that takes on select demon-extermination jobs.

He now operates alongside Kisara, a demon with whom he has formed a peculiar contract that boosts her power in exchange for his memories. Their connection is central to both the progression of their missions and the slow unraveling of Shu’s forgotten past. While he publicly claims financial hardship and job freedom as reasons for leaving AAA Defender, it becomes clear that Shu’s motivations run far deeper, driven by revenge, loss, and unanswered questions.

Appearance

Shu is a young man with a lean build, medium-length dark blue hair, and blue eyes. His appearance is typically neat but casual, often wearing black or navy-blue jackets, button-down shirts, and slacks. Despite his financial troubles, he maintains a professional demeanor while on missions.

During combat or high-risk situations, he often dons tactical gear suited for demon-hunting operations. His expressions tend to shift between determined seriousness and dry exhaustion, particularly when dealing with financial issues or Kisara’s antics.

Personality

Shu is clever, resourceful, and driven, but also deeply cynical and emotionally guarded. His personality blends sharp wit with underlying grief, and he is often seen juggling desperation, sarcasm, and quiet resolve. He presents himself as a cool-headed professional, but his reckless spending, underbidding contracts, and dependence on Kisara show a man living on the edge.

Despite his flaws, Shu has a strong sense of justice and refuses to walk away from dangerous missions if innocent lives are at stake. He can be manipulative when pursuing leads or contracts, but he is also loyal and protective, especially when it comes to those close to him. His mysterious past and fragmented memories add layers to his character, revealing a man chasing not only answers but redemption.

Role in the Story

  • From Elite to Independent
After resigning from AAA Defender, Shu establishes his own firm, I&S Office, and becomes infamous for taking low-paying, high-risk jobs. This decision, while giving him more freedom, puts him at constant financial disadvantage. Nevertheless, his true motivation lies in searching for the truth behind his family’s death and the larger demon conspiracy threatening Bayron City.

  • Partnership with Kisara
Shu’s relationship with Kisara is central to both his missions and character development. As his contracted demon partner, Kisara assists in combat but also feeds on Shu’s memories as the cost for her power. Their bond blurs the lines between romance, partnership, and dependency, with Kisara caring deeply for Shu despite his emotional complexity and forgetfulness toward her.

  • Unraveling the Truth
As Shu takes on more demon extermination contracts, he slowly pieces together clues tied to his missing memories and the truth about the demonic organizations operating in Bayron. His journey pits him against former allies, rival contractors, and powerful enemies, forcing him to face the consequences of his past, the cost of his deals with Kisara, and the limits of his own humanity.

Relationships

Kisara
A powerful demon girl and Shu’s closest partner. Their contract allows Kisara to fight using enhanced strength, but in return, Shu sacrifices portions of his memories. Their relationship is intimate and complex, ranging from banter to emotional entanglement. Despite this, Shu often resists forming deeper emotional ties due to the pain of past loss.

Ayano Yugiri
Shu’s ex-girlfriend and a member of AAA Defender Co. Ayano frequently clashes with Shu over his recklessness and poor financial decisions, but also clearly still cares for him. Their relationship adds romantic and dramatic tension to the story, especially as they cross paths during missions.

I&S Office Staff
Shu primarily runs I&S Office with Kisara but occasionally works with others depending on the mission. Due to the company’s micro size and minimal funding, Shu often takes on solo or high-risk operations that no one else will accept.

Trivia

    • Shu is notoriously broke, often borrowing money, skipping meals, or relying on Kisara for basic necessities.
      • His full company name, “Isamu & Shu Office,” hints at a past connection, possibly with someone named Isamu who remains a mystery.
      • He uses customized demon-hunting weapons, often combining modern firearms with supernatural enhancements provided by Kisara.
      • Despite his cynical front, Shu has a strong moral compass, often helping those in need even when he’s underpaid or exhausted.
      • He has a habit of forgetting important details, due to the nature of his contract with Kisara gradually erasing his memories.

    Legacy

      • Shu Ogata stands as a reluctant hero caught between guilt, loss, and duty. In Engage Kiss, he represents a protagonist who is flawed but relatable, guided less by a desire for glory and more by a quiet, burning need for closure. His struggles both emotional and financial ground him in a story full of demons and destruction, making him a human core in a supernatural world.
        • Shu’s character arc is a balance of revenge, vulnerability, and hope, offering viewers a deeper look into what it means to fight for answers while losing pieces of yourself along the way. His journey continues to unfold through forgotten memories, complicated relationships, and the unspoken price of making deals with demons.
