Shirayuki (白雪) is the main protagonist of the Akagami no Shirayuki-hime (Snow White with the Red Hair) manga and anime series. She was born in the Kingdom of Tanbarun, where her vivid red hair, an extremely rare and striking trait, attracted unwanted attention. After catching the eye of Prince Raji Shenazard, who attempted to force her into becoming his concubine, Shirayuki made the bold decision to flee her homeland. Seeking freedom and autonomy, she escaped to the neighboring Kingdom of Clarines, where her journey truly begins.
In Clarines, Shirayuki establishes herself through determination and hard work, eventually becoming a Court Herbalist. She initially serves within the royal palace but is later assigned to represent the Royal Pharmacy at the Pharmacy Institute in the prestigious Scholar’s District of Lilias, where she continues to expand her knowledge and medical expertise. Her story is one of self-growth, resilience, and forging meaningful relationships while navigating court politics and the expectations of nobility.
Personality

Appearance in Anime
Shirayuki is known for her strong-willed, optimistic, and kind-hearted nature. She is determined and resilient, often facing challenges with a sense of responsibility and confidence. While she is independent and capable, she also recognizes when to accept help from others. However, her desire to rely on herself can sometimes lead to overworking, even to the point of making herself ill. She frequently prioritizes the needs of others, especially those she holds dear, often putting their well-being above her own and taking action when the situation demands it.
She has a strong sense of justice and prefers to do things the right way, which occasionally puts her in risky situations. As demonstrated during the Lilias arc in the manga, she dislikes hiding the truth and believes in facing reality directly to protect what matters to her.
Shirayuki is also highly skilled in herbalism and medicine, showing both patience and dedication in her work as a Court Herbalist. She takes pride in achieving success through her own merit, refusing to use her relationship with Zen Wistaria to raise her status or gain favor.
Despite her composed and responsible nature, Shirayuki is easily flustered by Zen’s romantic gestures, particularly in the earlier stages of their relationship. While she is aware of her feelings for him, expressing them openly proves to be a challenge, showing a modest and tender side of her character.
Appearance
Shirayuki is known for her distinctive apple-red hair, a rare and striking feature that frequently draws unwanted attention. At the beginning of the story, she wears her long hair in a ponytail that reaches halfway down her back. However, after fleeing Tanbarun to escape Prince Raji’s demands, she cuts her hair to chin-length as an act of defiance and independence. Her emerald-green eyes further enhance her natural beauty, offering a vivid contrast to her red hair.
Standing at approximately 5’4″ (162 cm), Shirayuki is of average height. Her appearance is typically modest and professional, particularly in her role as a Court Herbalist. After officially earning her position in the palace, her supervisor Garak presents her with a double-breasted white uniform, which functions both as a lab coat and as a symbol of her professional status. This coat is worn over her everyday clothes and signifies her affiliation with the Royal Pharmacy.
Before departing for her first assignment in Lilias, Shirayuki receives a navy blue cloak designed to represent her connection to Wistal. The cloak features two loose front panels and a motif of linked, concave-sided diamonds, a decorative element that matches the design used by the Wistal Palace Guard and throughout the palace architecture.
As a commoner, Shirayuki gained entry to the palace through merit rather than noble lineage. She wears an identification tag on a necklace, denoting her status and granting her access to the royal grounds. While on duty, she wears her Court Pharmacist uniform, but when called for formal meetings with high-ranking nobility (excluding Zen), she changes into formal attire out of respect. In contrast, when meeting Zen Wistaria, she feels comfortable enough to remain in her usual clothing.
Whenever Shirayuki travels to unfamiliar towns, she wears a hood to conceal her hair and avoid drawing attention, aware of how her unusual appearance could cause problems in unknown places.
History
Shirayuki was born in the mountain regions of the Kingdom of Tanbarun. Her father, Mukaze, is the leader of the Lions of the Mountains, while her mother passed away when Shirayuki was still very young. Believing that a peaceful and stable upbringing would be best for his daughter, Mukaze entrusted her care to her maternal grandparents, who owned a pub in the capital city of Tanbarun.
During her early childhood, Shirayuki briefly encountered her father at the pub, though she was too young to understand their relationship at the time. Her grandparents pointed him out quietly, and the memory lingered with her. Growing up in the city, Shirayuki lived a relatively modest life, but her vivid red hair constantly drew unwanted attention, making her cautious and self-aware, particularly in unfamiliar surroundings.
As she grew older, her grandparents passed away, and Shirayuki inherited the pub. Instead of continuing the family business, she chose to rebuild it into a pharmacy, where she earned respect for her skills and knowledge in herbalism. Over time, her growing reputation and unique appearance caught the attention of Prince Raji Shenazard, the self-centered crown prince of Tanbarun. Enchanted by her beauty and unusual hair color, Raji decided to make her his concubine.
One evening, a palace guard visited her pharmacy with orders that she prepare to move to the palace. Refusing to accept such a fate, Shirayuki devised a plan to escape. She calmly completed her remaining medicinal orders, cut off her long red hair, and left the strands on her windowsill as a final message. She then fled Tanbarun, leaving her past behind.
While traveling through the forest, Shirayuki came upon an abandoned mansion. Finding no one home, she decided to wait by the door, eventually falling asleep. The next morning, she was discovered by Zen Wistaria, Mitsuhide, and Kiki, three travelers from the neighboring Kingdom of Clarines. This chance encounter would mark the beginning of Shirayuki’s new life and journey one defined by freedom, self-growth, and deepening bonds with the people of Clarines.
Relationships
Mukaze
Mukaze is Shirayuki’s biological father and the leader of the Lions of the Mountains. After the death of Shirayuki’s mother, Mukaze decided that his daughter would be better off living a peaceful life away from the dangers of his mountain lifestyle. He entrusted her care to her maternal grandparents, who raised her in the city of Tanbarun. When she was a toddler, she saw Mukaze briefly in their tavern, but the two never interacted; her grandparents quietly pointed him out, revealing his identity to her.
Although that was her only memory of him for many years, Shirayuki finally reconnects with Mukaze after the events of the Sea’s Talon incident. Despite the long separation and initial awkwardness, they begin to form a respectful and warm bond. Mukaze shows hesitation in fully embracing his role as a father but makes it clear through his actions that he genuinely cares for Shirayuki and supports her from a distance.
Zen Wistaria
Shirayuki first meets Zen Wistaria, the second prince of Clarines, while fleeing from Tanbarun. After falling asleep outside an abandoned mansion in the forest, she awakens to Zen, Mitsuhide, and Kiki. Initially unaware of his royal status, Shirayuki offers to treat a minor injury on Zen’s arm, only to be met with suspicion. To prove her sincerity, she uses the medicine on herself, earning Zen’s trust.
Their bond develops quickly into mutual admiration, with each inspiring the other to work harder and grow. Shirayuki is drawn to Zen’s sincerity and strong sense of justice, while Zen is captivated by Shirayuki’s independence, resilience, and kindness. Though Shirayuki initially struggles to express her romantic feelings, she eventually confesses her love, and the two become a couple.
Despite the challenges posed by their differing social standings, their relationship deepens. Shirayuki, raised to be independent, gradually learns to rely on Zen for emotional support and guidance, while Zen values her strength and wishes to stand beside her as an equal. As of chapter 60, the two are in a long-distance relationship, and in chapter 62, Shirayuki reaffirms her desire to be by Zen’s side and become someone worthy of that role. To achieve this, she sets her sights on Wilant Castle, hoping to gain recognition from Prince Izana. In chapter 106, before departing on a mission to distribute the olin maris herb across the northern lands, Shirayuki reflects that she still hasn’t voiced her true desire to live in Clarines, the country she chose because of Zen.
Raji Shenazard
At the beginning of the story, Shirayuki has a deep dislike for Prince Raji, who attempted to force her into becoming his concubine simply because of her rare red hair. In an act of rebellion, she cuts her hair short and leaves it behind, symbolizing that he can possess her hair, but never her. Raji later attempts to poison her with an apple to render her immobile and return her to the palace. However, Zen ends up poisoned instead, and Shirayuki confronts Raji to obtain the antidote, showing her courage and loyalty to her new friends.
After being publicly reprimanded by Zen, Raji is forced to swear he will never approach Shirayuki again. Over time, however, their relationship begins to shift. Shirayuki starts to offer him help such as treating his stomach pain and shows small signs of kindness, like smiling at his efforts. Eventually, she becomes the only person in history to receive the title “Friend to the Tanbarun Royal Family”, allowing her to attend royal events and symbolizing the growth of their friendship despite a rocky beginning.
Izana Wistaria
Shirayuki’s relationship with Prince Izana, Zen’s older brother and the crown prince of Clarines, is complex and initially strained. While she respects him as royalty, Izana is wary of her influence on Zen and tests the strength and seriousness of their relationship on several occasions. Though their direct interactions are limited, Izana often uses subtle means to assess her worth, such as sending her on a medical assignment in a distant part of Clarines for three months, separating her from Zen to see how she handles the distance.
After the events in Lilias, Izana’s attitude toward her begins to shift slightly. He starts to recognize her sincerity, dedication, and professional skill. While he remains cautious, he shows signs of growing trust in her abilities and her intentions, particularly where they concern Zen’s future. Shirayuki, in turn, understands the importance of gaining Izana’s acknowledgment if she wishes to remain close to Zen and continues to work toward earning his approval.
