Shinobu Kocho(胡こ蝶ちょう しのぶ) is a prominent supporting character in the manga and anime seriesDemon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.She is a member of the Demon Slayer Corps and holds the position of the Insect Hashira (蟲柱, Mushi Bashira), a title bestowed upon the most skilled swordsmen within the organization.Shinobu is the younger sister of Kanae Kochō and the adoptive elder sister of Kanao Tsuyuri. Shinobu Kocho is a petite young woman characterized by her slender and short stature, along with a pale complexion. Her large, pupil-less eyes exhibit a gradient purple hue, giving them an insect-like appearance. She has short, raven-black wavy hair that transitions into dark purple at the tips. Her hair is styled into a flat yakai-maki bun at the back of her head, adorned with a butterfly ornament in shades of white, turquoise, and light purple. She also features center-parted, ear-length curtain bangs that frame her face, with two thinner chin-length locks of hair in front of her ears. Shinobu’s diminutive size contrasts with the more physically imposing Hashira, a fact she acknowledges, noting her lack of physical strength necessary to decapitate demons like her peers. Zenitsu Agatsuma once commented that Shinobu’s appearance is so striking that she could make a living based solely on her looks.
Shinobu wears the standard uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps, which includes a dark purple-tinted jacket with golden buttons, a stand-up collar, and long sleeves. The kanji for “Destroy” (滅) is inscribed on the back of her jacket. Her uniform is complemented by dark purple tabi socks and loose-fitting tattsuke-hakama pants. Shinobu Kocho presents herself with a bright, friendly, and cheerful demeanor, often wearing an easygoing smile regardless of the circumstances.However, this outward behavior is quickly revealed to be a façade. She has a tendency to tease others, sometimes in a manner bordering on sadism, as seen in her frequent taunting of Giyu Tomioka. Despite her seemingly relaxed and kind exterior, Shinobu harbors a deep resentment towards demons, which contrasts with her initial claim of wanting to coexist peacefully with them.This cruel side is evident when she kills a demon known as Daughter after giving her false hope of aid, and when she immediately attempts to kill Nezuko Kamado without giving Tanjiro Kamado an opportunity to demonstrate Nezuko’s harmlessness toward humans. Over time, however, Shinobu’s more compassionate nature emerges, particularly towards Tanjiro and Nezuko, after learning about their circumstances.

Due to the structure of her sword, which is not suited for blocking attacks, Shinobu compensates with her swift and precise thrusts. Stinger Nichirin Katana,Shinobu wields a uniquely modified Nichirin Katana, crafted by Tecchin Tecchikawahara. The weapon resembles a typical katana from the handle to slightly above the hilt, but beyond that point, it transitions into a rod that ends with a needle-like tip, mimicking an insect’s stinger. This design allows for the injection of wisteria poison into demons, compensating for Shinobu’s relative lack of physical strength and inability to decapitate them. The sword’s tsuba is shaped like a butterfly with an orange trim, while the handle is orange, wrapped in turquoise cords, and finished with an orange kashira. The blade itself is lavender-blue and bears engravings:“Evil Demon” (惡あっ鬼き, Akki)on the right side and“Destruction” (滅めっ殺さつ, Messatsu)on the left, reflecting the weapon’s unique structure. Additionally, Shinobu has modified the sheath to function as a portable poison mixer and loader.
Trivia
Shinobu’s surname, Kocho (胡蝶), uses the Kan-on’yomi reading of the kanji for “butterfly.” Her first name, Shinobu, is written in hiragana, which means it does not carry specific semantic values. However, it is commonly associated with the kanji (忍), meaning “stealth,” “endurance,” or “patience.” Notably, Shinobu’s name is written with three hiragana characters, which differs from the names of Kanae and Kanao, both of which are written with three katakana characters.
In the series’ popularity polls, Shinobu ranked 6th in the first poll, receiving 1,813 votes. In the second popularity poll, she improved her ranking to 5th place with a total of 8,787 votes.
Shinobu shares her Japanese and English voice actresses with several other characters, including Emi Igawa from Your Lie in April, Yumeko Jabami from Kakegurui, and Therese Alexanderite from The Rising of the Shield Hero.
Shinobu and Mitsuri share a close bond, as they were the only two female Hashira following the death of Kanae Kocho. Mitsuri also teaches Shinobu Western cooking techniques.

Although Shinobu would never admit it, she had a naturally airheaded side. This was particularly evident in the bizarre names she suggested for Kanao Tsuyuri. Upon hearing these names, Kanae was so taken aback that she reacted with an exaggerated “EH?!” expression, a situation so surprising that even Aoi Kanzaki could not diffuse it.

Shinobu’s haori, which resembles the wings of a monarch butterfly, carries symbolic significance. In nature, monarch butterflies are poisonous due to their milkweed diet, serving as a defense mechanism against predators. This concept is reflected in Shinobu’s use of poison in battle and is paralleled by her habit of consuming wisteria, which ultimately caused Doma to be severely poisoned after absorbing her.
