“Even if you lose everything, you must stand up again. That’s what it means to be a man.“ |
Appearance
Shinichiro Sano was a tall, slim individual standing at six feet, with unkempt short hair and dull black eyes. He bore a striking resemblance to his younger brother, Manjiro “Mikey” Sano, particularly with his heart-shaped face and thin lips. Despite his involvement in running a motor shop, Shinichiro was rarely seen in a work uniform, preferring casual attire. His typical outfit consisted of a pearl white shirt, light wash jeans, and slip-on shoes. On occasion, he would tie a jacket around his waist while working. He also had a habit of smoking cigarettes. Though he rarely wore accessories, Shinichiro often sported a simple silver chain around his neck.
During his younger delinquent years, Shinichiro maintained a neatly styled pompadour and wore the traditional Black Dragon gang uniform, representing his role as the founding leader of the gang.

Personality
Sano Crying under the rain.
Shinichiro Sano was known for being “weak to women, weak in fights, but reliable.” Despite being a poor fighter, he was a widely respected figure in the delinquent world, earning the admiration and loyalty of those around him due to his caring nature, humility, and ability to stand up for others. His leadership skills and unwavering reliability allowed him to gain the respect of stronger delinquents both within his own gang, Black Dragon, and among rival groups.
Although he stepped down as leader of Black Dragon, Shinichiro always kept an eye on the delinquent world and retained fond memories of the gang he founded. It was his lifelong dream for both Izana and Mikey to inherit leadership of the Black Dragon, and he was deeply saddened when the gang shifted towards a more violent and ruthless path.
History
Shinichiro Sano was the eldest sibling in the Sano family, revered as a hero and role model by his younger siblings: Manjiro “Mikey” Sano, Izana Kurokawa, and Emma Sano. Charismatic and empathetic, Shinichiro possessed a unique ability to bring people together, often setting aside differences for the greater good of others. Despite his weakness in combat, Shinichiro was widely respected in Japan’s delinquent world as the founder and First Generation President of Black Dragon, one of the most notorious gangs of its time. His leadership was marked by humility and compassion, earning him admiration not only from his gang members but from rivals as well. Even years after his death, later generations of Black Dragon members continued to honor his memory and hold him in high regard.
Shinichiro had a deep passion for motorcycles, frequently working on them in his garage. His workspace became a refuge for fellow delinquents, who would visit to relax and seek advice. His prized possession was his motorcycle, which he later passed down to his younger brother, Mikey.
Tragically, Shinichiro’s life was cut short on August 14, 2003, at the age of 23. While attempting to steal a motorcycle from his shop as a gift for Mikey, Keisuke Baji and Kazutora Hanemiya were caught in the act by Shinichiro himself. Unaware of his identity, Kazutora, in a panicked attempt to protect Baji, struck Shinichiro with a pair of bolt cutters, fatally injuring him. His untimely death became a pivotal moment in the delinquent world, deeply affecting many of the story’s main characters.
Even after his passing, Shinichiro’s legacy continued to influence those around him, including his siblings and others within the delinquent community. His impact on those he left behind played a significant role in shaping the motivations and actions of several key figures throughout the series.
Relationships
Family
Manjiro Sano (Mikey)
Shinichiro deeply cared for his younger brother, Mikey, and they shared a close bond. Despite being able to save Mikey from a vegetative state through his time-leaping ability, Shinichiro sensed something was wrong when Mikey exhibited violent behavior, such as ripping out Haruchiyo Sanzu’s mouth. Shinichiro’s actions to save Mikey inadvertently led to Mikey developing a dangerous “Dark Impulse.”
Izana Kurokawa
Izana is Shinichiro’s adoptive younger brother. Although they were not related by blood, Shinichiro treated Izana as his own sibling and cared deeply for him. However, Izana struggled with feelings of abandonment, believing he was not a true member of the Sano family, which influenced his later actions.
Emma Sano
Emma is Shinichiro’s younger half-sister from their father’s second marriage. Shinichiro cared for Emma and acted as a protective older brother to both her and Mikey, further cementing his role as a central figure in the Sano family.
Tokyo Manji Gang
Ken Ryuguji (Draken)
Shinichiro was highly respected by Draken due to his influence in the delinquent world. Draken admired Shinichiro’s leadership qualities and charisma, despite Shinichiro not being a strong fighter.
Takemichi Hanagaki
After saving Mikey through time-leaping, Shinichiro rescued a young Takemichi and Hinata Tachibana from middle school bullies. This act inspired Takemichi to pursue a path of heroism. Additionally, Shinichiro unknowingly transferred his time-leaping ability to Takemichi, which would later awaken in Takemichi following Hina’s death in alternate timelines. This ability became a central tool in Takemichi’s attempts to save his friends and change the future.
Kazutora Hanemiya
Kazutora unintentionally killed Shinichiro during a botched robbery. Though Kazutora held no ill will towards Shinichiro personally, this event would haunt him throughout the series, leading to deep emotional turmoil and guilt.
Keisuke Baji
Baji was present during the tragic incident that led to Shinichiro’s death. Baji’s actions in this event shaped much of his character’s trajectory, with guilt over Shinichiro’s death impacting his role in later arcs.
Black Dragon
Takeomi Akashi, Wakasa Imaushi, and Keizo Arashi
As close confidants and founding members of Black Dragon, these three delinquents shared a deep bond with Shinichiro. They looked up to him as their leader and admired his sense of responsibility and vision for the gang, even long after his death.
Seishu Inui
As a later generation member of Black Dragon, Seishu respected Shinichiro’s legacy and viewed him as a figure who stood for the original values of the gang before it turned more violent in subsequent generations.
Others
Haruchiyo Sanzu
Haruchiyo was one of the few people aware of Shinichiro’s time-leaping ability. He also acted as Shinichiro’s trigger for the time-leap that saved Mikey from his vegetative state. However, this incident also revealed Mikey’s dark impulses, which troubled both Shinichiro and Haruchiyo.
Hinata Tachibana
Shinichiro saved both Takemichi and Hina from middle school bullies in an alternate timeline where he successfully time-leaped to save Mikey. This act significantly impacted both Hina and Takemichi’s futures.
Tetta Kisaki
While Shinichiro and Kisaki never met in person, Kisaki witnessed Shinichiro rescuing Takemichi and Hina from bullies. This event occurred in an alternate timeline after Shinichiro successfully saved Mikey from his vegetative state.
Skills and Abilities
Authority
Shinichiro Sano was a legendary figure in the world of delinquents, highly regarded for his ability to lead and inspire others. As the founder and First Generation President of Black Dragon, one of the most powerful delinquent gangs in Japan, he held complete command over its members. His leadership was characterized by guidance, wisdom, and an unshakeable sense of responsibility, which allowed him to command some of the strongest delinquents of his time. Even after his death, Shinichiro’s name remains synonymous with respect and admiration in the delinquent circles. Members of both older and newer generations speak highly of him, praising his ability to unite delinquents from all walks of life under a common banner.
Fighting Prowess
Despite his legendary status, Shinichiro was known to be a poor fighter. Many of the delinquents who followed him were far stronger in physical combat. However, in rare instances, Shinichiro exhibited moments of immense strength, such as when he cracked a wall with his fists during a fit of extreme rage. In an alternate timeline, he was shown to have beaten a group of thugs on his own, displaying a capacity for violence when pushed to his limits. Nevertheless, his true strength lay in his leadership and charisma, not in his fighting ability.
Charisma
Shinichiro possessed extraordinary charisma, which made him stand out as a leader even though he lacked physical strength. His humility, kindness, and willingness to stand up for others drew people to him, making him universally respected by both his allies and rivals. His ability to inspire loyalty in others was unmatched, allowing him to not only lead Black Dragon but also earn the respect of delinquent gangs across Japan. His reputation as a leader of integrity and compassion continued to influence many characters even after his death, cementing his place as a figure of admiration in the delinquent world.
Time Travel
Shinichiro once wielded a supernatural time-leaping ability, which allowed him to travel back in time. He only used this power once to alter the timeline and save his younger brother, Manjiro (Mikey), from an accident that would have left him in a vegetative state. After successfully altering the past, Shinichiro transferred his time-leaping power to Takemichi Hanagaki, after rescuing him and Hinata Tachibana from middle school bullies. This transfer ultimately enabled Takemichi to use the ability to alter future events and prevent tragedies.
