“Red-Haired” Shanks, commonly known as just “Red Hair,” is the chief of the Red Hair Pirates and one of the Four Emperors ruling over the New World. A former apprentice of the legendary Roger Pirates, Shanks started his pirate journey aboard their ship alongside Buggy. After Gol D. Roger’s death, Shanks formed his own crew, eventually rising to prominence as one of the most powerful and influential pirates in the world.
Background
Appearance in Anime
Shanks grew up on the legendary ship of the Roger Pirates, learning the ways of the sea as an apprentice under Gol D. Roger. His time aboard the ship, alongside his fellow apprentice Buggy, shaped his values and laid the foundation for his future endeavors as a pirate. Following Roger’s execution, Shanks formed the Red Hair Pirates, building a loyal and formidable crew that would become one of the most respected in the New World.
Twelve years before the start of the series, Shanks operated in the East Blue, where he inspired a young Monkey D. Luffy to pursue his dream of becoming a pirate. In a fateful moment, Shanks accidentally allowed Luffy to eat the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that granted the boy rubber-like powers. He later sacrificed his left arm to save Luffy from the Lord of the Coast, solidifying his role as the boy’s protector and mentor. Shanks also entrusted Luffy with the straw hat once worn by Gol D. Roger, making a promise to meet again when Luffy became a great pirate.
Appearance
Shanks is a tall, lean man with a charismatic presence and a carefree demeanor. He has distinct red hair, earning him his nickname, and a scar across his left eye from an encounter with Blackbeard. Shanks typically wears a loose, open shirt, dark pants, and a long black cape, exuding a simple but commanding pirate aesthetic. His trademark straw hat, passed down from Gol D. Roger to Luffy, serves as a symbol of their shared dream and bond.
Personality
Shanks is known for his laid-back and approachable personality, often appearing cheerful and easygoing. Despite this, he is a man of immense resolve and conviction, willing to put his life on the line to protect those he cares about. Shanks values freedom and camaraderie above all else, a philosophy he likely inherited from Roger. He is also incredibly perceptive and strategic, choosing to intervene only in moments of critical importance, such as the Marineford War.
