Setsuna’s Appearance in Anime

Setsuna’s personality is shaped heavily by the trauma of slavery and the near-extermination of her Ice Wolf tribe. Having endured abuse at the hands of humans, she developed a deep hatred toward them, particularly the knights of the Jioral Kingdom, and derives satisfaction from exacting vengeance against those responsible. Despite this animosity, Setsuna demonstrates a strong moral boundary, refusing to harm innocents or extend her anger to those not involved in her tribe’s suffering.

Outside of battle, Setsuna is quiet, reserved, and often blunt in her speech, showing little interest in unnecessary conversation. Her demeanor reflects both her wariness of others and her animal-like instincts as a demi-human. Once freed from slavery, however, she begins to display a more trusting side, especially toward Keyaru, to whom she develops strong loyalty and gratitude. She shows determination in combat, discipline in training, and a willingness to place herself in danger to protect her allies. These traits highlight the duality of her character: a fierce and merciless warrior toward her enemies, yet capable of compassion and restraint when it comes to those she considers family.

Appearance

Setsuna is a short demi-human girl of the Ice Wolf tribe, distinguished by her blend of human and lupine features. She has bluish hair that complements her pale complexion and wolf-like traits. Her legs are covered in thick fur and end in clawed wolf paws rather than human feet, while her forearms are also partially covered in fur. A pair of upright wolf ears with grey tips sit atop her head, and she possesses a long, bushy tail, both of which serve as defining features of her beastkin heritage. Despite these animal traits, much of her body retains a human-like appearance, emphasizing her hybrid nature.

In terms of attire, Setsuna’s clothing changes after her introduction. Initially, she appears in plain and restrictive garments associated with her life as a slave. After joining Keyaru’s party, she is provided with more practical outfits suited for combat, reflecting her role as both warrior and companion. Her appearance is frequently highlighted in the series, with Freia describing her human-like feminine features as beautiful, reinforcing the perception of her as both an exotic and striking figure among the party.

Background

Setsuna was born into the Ice Wolf tribe, a demi-human clan known for its strength and affinity with ice. Over time, the tribe was targeted by human forces from the Jioral Kingdom, who captured many of its members and sold them into slavery. Setsuna was among those enslaved, enduring harsh treatment and forced labor that left her with a deep resentment toward humans.

She was eventually purchased in the city of Lanarrita by Keyaru, who sought to recruit her into his party. Although initially mistrustful of him due to her past experiences, Setsuna accepted his offer after being freed from the constraints of slavery and given a chance to fight. Under his guidance, she learned to channel her Ice Wolf heritage more effectively in battle and pledged her loyalty to him. Her decision to join Keyaru’s group marked a turning point in her life, transforming her from an oppressed captive into an empowered ally.

Relationships

Keyaru
After being purchased from slavery by Keyaru in Lanarrita, Setsuna agreed to serve him in exchange for his help in raising her level cap and supporting her goal of saving her village from the Jioral Kingdom. The two develop a strong bond rooted in shared desires for vengeance. Setsuna respects Keyaru not only for his combat abilities but also for his resourcefulness, leadership, and care for his companions. Their relationship is characterized by loyalty and intimacy, with Setsuna expressing complete devotion to him, stating that she belongs to him in mind, body, and soul. While Keyaru does not classify her as a lover in the same sense as Kureha or Eve, he treats Setsuna as a valued partner and comrade.

Freia
Setsuna shares a friendly yet occasionally competitive relationship with Freia. Both women vie for Keyaru’s attention, leading to moments of rivalry and jealousy on Setsuna’s part. Despite this, their bond as companions remains strong, forged through shared experiences as members of Keyaru’s party. Setsuna respects Freia’s magical skill and has assisted her in training for close combat to prepare her for dangerous situations.

Eve Reese
Eve becomes an important ally and later a close friend to Setsuna as they travel together. Initially viewing her simply as another companion, Setsuna grows attached to Eve after witnessing her determination to protect her own tribe and ascend as the next Demon King. Setsuna supports Eve’s training in close combat and fights alongside her during key battles. Their closeness is further reinforced by their similar age, which fosters a sense of camaraderie within the group.

Etymology

The name Setsuna is written in katakana (セツナ), which by itself does not carry an inherent meaning. However, when expressed in kanji, it can take on several possible interpretations. Written as 刹那, it means “moment,” “instant,” or “juncture,” a term often used in Japanese literature and philosophy to signify the fleeting nature of time. Alternatively, written as 雪菜, it combines yuki (雪, “snow”) and na (菜, “vegetables” or “greens”), a rendering that resonates with her Ice Wolf heritage through its reference to snow.

Her true name, Nayuta (ナユタ), is likewise presented in katakana without inherent meaning but can also be written in kanji. In one form, 那由他, it is a Buddhist numerical term representing “decillion and others,” symbolizing an unimaginably large number. Another possible writing, 那由多, breaks down into na (那, “what?”), yu (由, “reason” or “cause”), and ta (多, “many”). Both versions highlight concepts of vastness and multiplicity, adding layers of symbolic depth to the name beyond its phonetic use.
