Sanae Dekomori (凸守 早苗, Dekomori Sanae), is one of the main characters in the anime and light novel series Chūnibyō Demo Koi ga Shitai! (Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!). A proud practitioner of “chūnibyō” (eighth-grader syndrome), she is a loyal member of the Far Eastern Magic Napping Society of Summer, and is best known for her over-the-top delusions, dramatic vocabulary, and her trademark drill-shaped twin tails.
She serves as a humorous, energetic foil to the other characters, particularly to Shinka Nibutani, whom she both idolizes and antagonizes. Despite her wild behavior and eccentricities, Sanae is a highly intelligent and emotionally sincere girl, with a strong sense of loyalty and a hidden vulnerability beneath her delusions.
Background

Appearance in Anime
Sanae is a middle schooler who skips a grade to attend the same high school as Rikka Takanashi, whom she reveres as her master. Sharing a strong affinity for delusional fantasy, Sanae joins Rikka’s self-created club, the Far Eastern Magic Napping Society of Summer, where she expresses her “magical powers” as the wielder of Mjolnir Hammer, her imaginary weapon embodied by her long twintails.
Despite her eccentric outward behavior, Sanae comes from a privileged and intellectual background. She is academically gifted, scoring highly in tests and often surprising others with her intelligence. Her delusions act as a protective barrier from the responsibilities and pressures of the real world.
Appearance
Sanae is a petite girl with long blonde hair tied into high, thick twin drills that she uses as mock weapons during her fantasy battles. She has bright blue eyes and wears the standard high school uniform, though she often modifies it slightly to suit her chūnibyō flair.
Her overall appearance gives off the impression of an energetic, slightly spoiled girl with an affinity for the dramatic and whimsical. She is often seen making exaggerated poses or movements when acting out her delusions.
Personality
Sanae is enthusiastic, hyperactive, and deeply committed to her delusions. She uses grandiose language, often referring to herself as a wielder of supernatural powers, and engages in pretend battles with fellow chūnibyōs or her “rival,” Shinka Nibutani (whom she stubbornly calls “Mori Summer”).
Beneath her eccentric personality, Sanae is loyal, compassionate, and emotionally sensitive. Her chūnibyō behavior is not just for fun it is a form of emotional expression and escapism. She struggles with feelings of loneliness and attachment, particularly toward Rikka and Shinka, and has difficulty expressing those emotions in a grounded way.
Role in the Story
Joining the Club: Sanae joins the Far Eastern Magic Napping Society of Summer as a devout supporter of Rikka’s “Wicked Eye” persona. Her presence injects energy and chaos into the club, frequently sparking humorous confrontations especially with Shinka.
Rivalry with Shinka Nibutani: Sanae firmly believes that Shinka is the real “Mori Summer,” a former chūnibyō queen, and seeks to “expose” her despite Shinka’s attempts to bury her embarrassing past. Their rivalry leads to over-the-top battles, comedic clashes, and eventually, a strange but endearing friendship.
Emotional Growth: While Sanae continues her chūnibyō ways, she experiences emotional growth, learning to form stronger interpersonal bonds and reflect on her own behavior. Her vulnerability becomes more evident as she navigates her growing attachment to her friends and the idea of change.
Relationships
Rikka Takanashi: Sanae’s self-proclaimed “master” and closest friend. She admires Rikka’s commitment to the chūnibyō lifestyle and seeks to support her at all costs. Their friendship is pure and sincere, rooted in shared fantasy and mutual respect.
Shinka Nibutani: Sanae’s “rival” and source of endless conflict. Though she constantly antagonizes Shinka, the two develop a comedic love-hate relationship. Sanae often forces Shinka to confront her past, even as she seeks her approval deep down.
Yuuta Togashi: Sanae respects Yuuta as Rikka’s partner but often treats him with the same dramatic flair she applies to everyone else. Their interactions are generally light-hearted and humorous.
