Sakurako Ōmuro

Sakurako Ōmuro (大室 櫻子, Ōmuro Sakurako), also spelled Sakurako Ohmuro, is a prominent supporting character in the YuruYuri series, as well as one of the main protagonists in its spin-off, Ōmuro-ke. She also appears in MiniYuri, makes a cameo in Reset!, and is featured in the parody title Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken. Known for her high energy, comedic antics, and frequent rivalry with her classmate Himawari Furutani, Sakurako is one of the most recognizable and lively characters in the YuruYuri universe.

Background

Appearance in anime

Sakurako is a student at Nanamori Middle School, where she is a member of the Student Council alongside Himawari Furutani, Sakurako’s self-proclaimed rival. Although she’s not academically gifted or particularly responsible, she managed to secure a council position, largely due to her enthusiastic personality (and despite her lack of diligence).

In the spin-off Ōmuro-ke, she takes on a central role, where her home life and relationships with her older sisters Nadeshiko and Hanako are explored in more detail, giving viewers and readers a deeper look into her everyday world.

Appearance

Sakurako has short, light brown hair often styled in a somewhat messy fashion with small pigtails or side buns, and light amber-colored eyes. Her expressions are highly animated, reflecting her often exaggerated emotions. She typically wears the Nanamori Middle School uniform, but in Ōmuro-ke, she’s frequently seen in casual homewear, adding to the cozy slice-of-life tone of the spin-off.

Personality

Sakurako is energetic, impulsive, and a little airheaded, often acting before she thinks. She’s known for picking fights with Himawari, yet she clearly shares a close bond with her, even if neither will admit it outright. Despite her immature and competitive nature, Sakurako is loyal, loving, and emotionally intuitive in her own chaotic way.

She often tries to appear tough and rebellious, but it’s clear she values her friendships and family deeply. Sakurako also tends to exaggerate her achievements and claim credit for things she hasn’t done—especially when Himawari is nearby.

Role in the Story

  • YuruYuri
In the main series, Sakurako often appears in scenes involving the Student Council, contributing to the comedic dynamic with Himawari, Sugiura Ayano, and others. Her frequent bickering with Himawari acts as a counterpart to the more romantic or subdued interactions in the series, offering energetic comic relief.

  • Ōmuro-ke
As a lead character in Ōmuro-ke, Sakurako is portrayed in a more grounded slice-of-life context. The spin-off focuses on her daily life at home, interactions with her sisters, and her unique way of dealing with mundane situations. The spotlight on her family relationships provides depth to her otherwise wild persona.

  • MiniYuri and Reset!
In these shorts and cameos, Sakurako maintains her role as a comedic presence, typically appearing in gag scenes or slice-of-life vignettes with other main and side characters.

  • Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime datta ken
Sakurako appears in this parody spin-off as part of the ensemble cast. Though the setting is fantastical, she retains her original personality traits, adding to the comedy of the absurd premise.

Relationships

Himawari Furutani
Her classmate and main rival, Himawari is the person Sakurako argues with the most but also spends the most time with. Their love-hate relationship is one of the most iconic in the series, full of witty exchanges, petty competition, and unspoken affection.

Nadeshiko and Hanako Ōmuro
Sakurako’s older and younger sisters, respectively. In Ōmuro-ke, these relationships are explored more thoroughly, with Sakurako acting like a mischievous middle child who alternates between teasing and genuinely bonding with her family.

Ayano Sugiura and the Student Council
While not as close to Ayano as to Himawari, Sakurako often shares scenes with the council president and participates in its various eccentric activities.

Trivia

    • Sakurako’s name, “Ōmuro” (大室), literally means “big room”, while “Sakurako” (櫻子) means “cherry blossom child.”
      • Despite being in the Student Council, she has poor grades and rarely contributes to her duties, often relying on Himawari to clean up after her.
      • She is often portrayed as comically incompetent, yet somehow always manages to land on her feet.
      • Her birthday is September 7, and she is a Virgo, often used ironically given her chaotic behavior.
      • In fan polls and rankings, Sakurako is consistently popular for her comedy and relatable energy.

    Legacy

      • Sakurako Ōmuro is one of the most beloved characters in the YuruYuri universe, bringing unfiltered humor, energy, and heartfelt moments to every scene she’s in. Whether through her competitive antics with Himawari or her slice-of-life adventures in Ōmuro-ke, Sakurako remains a symbol of youthful chaos and endearing imperfection.
        • Her character highlights the joy in ordinary, everyday relationships, especially those full of contradictions, making her a lasting favorite in both the main series and its spin-offs.
