Sakura Minamoto

Sakura Minamoto (源 さくら, Minamoto Sakura), is the main protagonist of Zombie Land Saga and the first of the seven girls to awaken as a zombie after being resurrected by Kotaro Tatsumi. She is a former high school student with unfulfilled dreams of becoming an idol, but after her untimely death, she is given a second chance to shine as part of the legendary zombie idol group, Franchouchou. Unlike the other members, Sakura does not have a legendary title and is simply referred to as “Number 1” (1号, Ichi-gō).

Appearance in anime

Before her death, Sakura was a hardworking and optimistic girl who dreamed of becoming an idol. However, she suffered from incredibly bad luck, often failing at crucial moments despite her efforts. On the day she decided to submit her idol application, she was hit by a truck and died instantly.

Years later, she was resurrected as a zombie by Kotaro Tatsumi, alongside six other legendary women from different eras. Unlike her fellow members, Sakura has no historical fame or significant past, making her an unusual addition to Franchouchou.

Appearance

Sakura has bright pink hair styled in a side ponytail with a small cowlick on top. She has purple eyes and fair skin. As a zombie, her skin tone is paler, and her eyes are more dull and lifeless when in their undead state. She retains visible scars and stitches from her resurrection but is typically made up to appear as a normal idol during performances.

Her default outfit consists of a white blouse, a plaid skirt, and a blue ribbon, reflecting her schoolgirl past. As part of Franchouchou, she wears various idol costumes during performances, often featuring vibrant colors and frilly designs.

Personality

Sakura is an enthusiastic and hardworking girl, but she struggles with self-confidence issues due to her constant misfortune in life. She is often easily discouraged and worries that she is not as talented or legendary as the other members of Franchouchou.

Despite this, Sakura is kind, supportive, and determined, always striving to improve herself as an idol. She serves as the heart of the group, encouraging her teammates even when she doubts herself. While she initially fears her zombie nature, she eventually embraces her second chance at life and works hard to make Franchouchou successful.

Role in the Story

  • Zombie Awakening & Formation of Franchouchou
Sakura is the first girl to regain consciousness after being revived, though she initially has no memories of her past life. She is thrown into the world of zombie idols without any understanding of how she died or why she was revived. Under Kotaro Tatsumi’s guidance, she reluctantly joins Franchouchou, though she remains uncertain about her place in the group.

  • Struggles & Growth as an Idol
As Franchouchou begins performing, Sakura struggles with self-doubt, feeling inadequate compared to the other legendary members. She constantly questions why she was revived, as she lacks a historical legacy like her teammates. However, through friendship and perseverance, she finds her own place in the group and gradually builds confidence.

  • Memory Recovery & Emotional Conflict
Eventually, Sakura regains her lost memories, recalling her past bad luck and failures. This revelation overwhelms her, making her fear that history will repeat itself. She temporarily distances herself from the group, believing that her presence might bring them misfortune. However, her teammates rally around her, proving that her determination and hard work matter more than any luck or past failures.

  • Acceptance & Franchouchou’s Success
After overcoming her doubts, Sakura fully embraces her role in Franchouchou, contributing to the group’s rise in popularity. She recognizes that being “ordinary” is not a weakness—her resilience and unwavering passion make her just as legendary as the others.

Relationships

Kotaro Tatsumi
Kotaro is the mysterious producer who revived Sakura and the rest of Franchouchou. Though he often teases and scolds her, he also pushes her to improve and believe in herself. There are hints that Kotaro knew Sakura before her death, which is later revealed in Zombie Land Saga Revenge.

Ai Mizuno
Ai is one of Sakura’s closest friends in Franchouchou and serves as a mentor figure due to her experience as a former idol from Iron Frill. While Ai is more serious and professional, she admires Sakura’s passion and determination.

Junko Konno
Sakura and Junko have a contrasting dynamic, as Junko is reserved and cautious while Sakura is more outgoing. Over time, Sakura helps Junko overcome her fears about modern idol culture, strengthening their friendship.

Saki Nikaido
Saki, the delinquent-like leader of Franchouchou, treats Sakura like a younger sister and often motivates her when she feels down. Their bond is one of trust and encouragement, with Saki pushing Sakura to believe in herself.

Lily Hoshikawa
Lily is cheerful and playful, often bringing lighthearted energy to the group. She and Sakura share a fun sibling-like bond, frequently engaging in comedic antics.

Yugiri
Yugiri, being the oldest and most composed member, acts as a guiding figure for Sakura, offering advice in a gentle yet wise manner.
