Saki Rukino

Saki Rukino (流木野 サキ, Rukino Saki), is one of the main characters in Valvrave the Liberator. She is a former idol, once adored by fans for her talents, but her career takes a significant downturn, leaving her aloof and disconnected. Despite her fame, Saki faces a period of personal growth and introspection, largely driven by her feelings of frustration and uncertainty regarding her career. Her involvement in the story takes a sharp turn when she discovers the hidden Valvrave mechs in Module 77 alongside Haruto Tokishima.

Saki becomes the pilot of Valvrave Four (coded VVVIV), which she names “Carmilla,” after being injected with a mysterious substance that grants her the same abilities as Haruto, including the ability to transfer to another body. This transformation into a Valvrave pilot propels Saki into the heart of the conflict, as she must navigate her newfound powers, responsibilities, and the complicated relationships that come with being a key player in the battle.

Appearance in Anime

Saki Rukino’s background is defined by her rise to fame as an idol. She was once a beloved figure, with a promising career that seemed destined for success. However, her career eventually plateaued, leaving her feeling isolated and disillusioned with her public life. This period of stagnation leads to Saki’s emotional distance from others, particularly as she struggles to find her purpose beyond the idol industry.

Her life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes involved with Haruto Tokishima and discovers the secret of the Valvrave mechs hidden in Module 77. Saki’s role in the narrative shifts dramatically as she becomes one of the few people to know about Haruto’s powers and, in turn, gains the same abilities. Her new role as the pilot of Valvrave Four marks the beginning of her transformation from a disillusioned former idol to a key figure in the ongoing war, facing the challenges of power, responsibility, and survival.

Appearance

Saki has a striking appearance, characterized by her idol background and her naturally glamorous demeanor. She is depicted as having long, dark hair and captivating eyes, which once helped her charm fans and the media. Her beauty is understated but undeniable, with her expressive features often reflecting her internal struggle and emotional depth. As a former idol, Saki’s style is often chic, with attention to detail in her clothing choices, which contrast with her more grounded and serious persona once she takes on the role of a Valvrave pilot.

When she takes on the mantle of Valvrave Four’s pilot, her appearance becomes more practical, often seen in her pilot suit. This change signifies her shift from a glamorous, public figure to a more battle-ready and emotionally invested character, ready to fight for a cause greater than herself.

Personality

Saki Rukino is initially aloof, distant, and jaded by her past as an idol. The public’s perception of her career is one of success, but the reality is far from it, as she grapples with the stagnation and decline of her fame. Her sense of self-worth is deeply tied to her career, and when that crumbles, she retreats into herself, pushing others away. This aloofness serves as a defense mechanism against the pain of her unfulfilled potential and disconnection from her past.

However, Saki’s personality evolves significantly throughout the series. As she becomes a pilot of the Valvrave and is thrust into the heart of the war, Saki begins to open up emotionally. Her experiences with Haruto and her new responsibilities as a pilot force her to confront her feelings of isolation and uncertainty. While still bearing traces of her initial aloofness, Saki learns to embrace her role as a Valvrave pilot and grows emotionally stronger, developing a more complex and empathetic outlook on life.

Her relationship with Haruto is particularly central to her emotional growth. Although she starts off as a seemingly distant and emotionally withdrawn person, her bond with him and her role in the battle force her to become more self-aware and emotionally connected to those around her.

Role in the Story

Becoming a Valvrave Pilot: After discovering the other Valvrave units hidden in Module 77, Saki chooses to pilot Valvrave Four (VVVIV) and names it Carmilla. She willingly accepts the nanomachine injection, gaining the same powers as Haruto, including immortality and the ability to possess other bodies. This moment marks a turning point, showing her resolve to protect her friends and fight for her place in the world.

Battles and Betrayals: Saki plays a vital role in defending Module 77 during multiple confrontations with the Dorssian military. She shows herself to be a competent and fierce fighter, proving that she is more than just a former idol. At one point, she is captured by enemy forces, leading to harrowing experiences that further harden her emotionally.

Immortality and the Future: In a series of flash-forwards, Saki is shown to be one of the few surviving Valvrave pilots, appearing centuries later to speak with a young prince who bears a striking resemblance to L-elf and Haruto. Her role in the future timeline hints at her continued efforts to preserve the legacy of the pilots and the sacrifices they made.

Relationships

Haruto Tokishima: Initially intrigued by Haruto, Saki gradually forms a deep, if complicated, bond with him. While Haruto struggles with his own feelings and the consequences of being a Valvrave pilot, Saki provides emotional support, even as she hides her own pain. Their connection is marked by shared understanding, isolation, and a sense of mutual sacrifice.

Akira Renbokoji: Another Valvrave pilot and one of the few individuals Saki can relate to. Though they don’t share many scenes, Akira and Saki are part of the select group that survives into the distant future.

Shoko Sashinami: Saki’s relationship with Shoko is marked by distance and tension, especially due to the complexity of their involvement with Haruto and the pressures of leadership in crisis.
