Saiki Kusuo

Kusuo Saiki (斉木 楠雄, Saiki Kusuo), is the main protagonist of Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.). He is a high school student with an overwhelming array of psychic powers, including telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, and teleportation. Despite possessing god-like abilities, Kusuo prefers to live a quiet, unremarkable life, avoiding attention and unnecessary trouble. However, his efforts to stay unnoticed are constantly foiled by his eccentric classmates, persistent family, and the countless bizarre situations he unwillingly gets caught up in.

Visually, Kusuo is known for his perpetual frown, green-tinted glasses, and distinctive pink antennas, which serve to limit his immense power. Although he initially distances himself from others, he gradually forms lasting friendships with his classmates and neighbors, particularly Riki Nendou, Shun Kaidou, and Yuuta Iridatsu, despite their odd personalities. In the Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan live-action adaptation, Kusuo was portrayed by Kento Yamazaki.

Appearance in anime

Kusuo was born with supernatural abilities, capable of telekinesis and telepathy as an infant, and as he grew older, his powers expanded to over 100 different abilities, making him one of the most powerful beings on Earth. While many would consider this a gift, Kusuo sees it as a burden, as he constantly struggles to maintain a normal life without his abilities interfering.

From an early age, Kusuo learned to control his immense power using his pink antennas, which act as limiters to prevent catastrophic consequences. He also adopted a strict, emotionless demeanor, choosing to avoid deep connections with others in order to prevent unnecessary complications. However, despite his efforts to remain a loner, Kusuo finds himself surrounded by eccentric individuals who, despite their flaws, become a part of his daily life.

Appearance

Kusuo has a lean build, with vibrant pink hair, which is a natural color due to his psychic abilities. He wears green-tinted glasses that serve to prevent his petrification ability from activating unintentionally, and two small pink antennas on his head that suppress his immense power.

Personality

Kusuo is highly intelligent, pragmatic, and introverted, preferring to keep to himself and avoid interacting with others unless necessary. He dislikes standing out, often using his psychic abilities subtly to manipulate situations so that he can stay in the background. However, despite his desire for solitude, he often finds himself unwillingly drawn into chaotic situations, largely due to his overbearing family, eccentric classmates, and unusual circumstances.

While Kusuo appears emotionless and indifferent, he is not heartless he secretly cares about those around him, though he rarely shows it openly. He often helps others in subtle ways, using his abilities to fix problems without taking credit. He also has a strong sense of responsibility, ensuring that his powers do not harm others or disrupt the balance of the world.

Although he is extremely intelligent and rational, Kusuo has a dry sense of humor and a sharp wit, often making sarcastic remarks about the absurdity of the people and situations around him. Despite his desire to live a peaceful life, he finds himself continuously entangled in bizarre and comedic events, making his efforts to remain unnoticed a constant struggle.

Role in the Story

  • A Psychic Who Wants a Normal Life
Kusuo’s main goal is to live an ordinary, uneventful life, free from attention and complications. However, because of his unmatched psychic abilities, he constantly gets pulled into unpredictable scenarios, forcing him to intervene using his powers, whether to prevent disasters, assist others, or simply escape annoying situations.

  • Unwanted Friendships and Social Interactions
Despite wanting to be left alone, Kusuo accumulates an unlikely group of friends, including Riki Nendou, Shun Kaidou, Kokomi Teruhashi, Aren Kuboyasu, and Kineshi Hairo, all of whom constantly drag him into various comedic misadventures. While he outwardly resents their presence, he ultimately accepts them as part of his daily life.

  • Avoiding Disaster
Kusuo’s powers are so vast that even the smallest lapse in control could lead to disaster. Throughout the series, he works hard to ensure that his abilities remain unnoticed, often fixing potentially catastrophic situations in secret. However, due to the unpredictable nature of his world, his attempts at damage control often backfire in hilarious ways.

  • The Global Scale of His Powers
Although Kusuo mostly deals with daily life inconveniences, he is also capable of influencing world-altering events, such as preventing natural disasters, stopping global threats, and even resetting time itself. Despite his power, he chooses not to abuse it, preferring to remain neutral rather than interfere unnecessarily.

Relationships

Riki Nendou
Riki Nendou is one of Kusuo’s biggest annoyances, as he is one of the few people immune to Kusuo’s telepathy. Shun Kaidou
Shun Kaidou is a delusional student who believes he is part of an imaginary secret war, often speaking in dramatic, over-the-top monologues. Kusuo finds him ridiculous, but ultimately lets him be, as Kaidou’s fantasies are harmless.

Kokomi Teruhashi
Kokomi Teruhashi is a beautiful and narcissistic girl who is used to receiving admiration from everyone. However, Kusuo is completely indifferent to her, much to her shock and frustration. Despite her obsession with getting his attention, Kusuo actively avoids interacting with her, seeing her as another source of unnecessary trouble.

Kusuo’s Parents (Kurumi & Kuniharu Saiki)
Kusuo’s parents are a highly mismatched couple, with his kind yet airheaded mother (Kurumi) and his useless but loving father (Kuniharu). While Kusuo often complains about their antics, he genuinely cares for them and uses his powers to help them when needed.

Yuuta Iridatsu
Yuuta is Kusuo’s young neighbor who idolizes him as a superhero, believing him to be a real-life masked hero, “The Red Hot Saima!” Kusuo finds Yuuta exhausting, but he secretly helps him out whenever possible.
