Ryomen Sukuna

Ryomen Sukuna (両りょう面めん宿すく儺な, Ryōmen Sukuna), often referred to simply as Sukuna (宿すく儺な, Sukuna), is the most powerful jujutsu sorcerer from over a thousand years ago and one of the main antagonists of the Jujutsu Kaisen series. Known as the King of Curses (呪のろいの王おう, Noroi no Ō), Sukuna’s malevolent legacy continues to haunt the jujutsu world even centuries after his death.

Legend and Origins

Sukuna was a feared figure during the Heian Era, regarded as an Imaginary Demon (仮か想そうの鬼き神じん, Kasō no Kijin). Contrary to myths that dehumanized him, Sukuna was originally a human sorcerer infamous for his unmatched power and atrocities. Known as the Disgraced One (堕だ天てん, Daten), Sukuna reveled in battle and destruction, leaving countless sorcerers and curses defeated in his wake.

His legend was born during the Golden Age of Jujutsu, a time when sorcerers banded together in an attempt to defeat him. Despite their best efforts, none were successful. Sukuna’s immense power and overwhelming mastery of cursed energy made him nearly invincible, and his reign of terror earned him unparalleled infamy.

Even after his death, Sukuna transcended mortality by transforming his body into a special grade cursed object, dividing his immense power across twenty indestructible fingers. These cursed objects persisted for over a millennium, becoming feared artifacts sought after by curses and sorcerers alike.

Personality

Sukuna is sadistic, arrogant, and manipulative. He revels in destruction and chaos, treating both humans and curses as beneath him. Sukuna is deeply prideful, considering himself invincible and mocking anyone who dares to challenge him. Despite his malevolence, Sukuna is cunning and strategic, often outwitting his opponents with calculated moves.

Although he shows no loyalty or compassion, Sukuna is intrigued by individuals with potential, such as Megumi Fushiguro, whom he manipulates for his own gain. His disdain for humanity is matched only by his amusement in their struggles, making him a complex and terrifying antagonist.

Incarnation

In June 2018, Sukuna was incarnated into the modern era when Yuji Itadori, a Tokyo Jujutsu High first-year student, consumed one of his fingers to save his friends from a cursed spirit. This act bound Sukuna to Yuji, making him a host vessel for the King of Curses.

Initially, Sukuna’s influence over Yuji was limited. He could only take control when Yuji was in dire straits or through binding vows. However, Sukuna’s scheming nature and cunning intelligence allowed him to bide his time, waiting for the perfect opportunity to further his own goals.

Eventually, Sukuna successfully manipulated events to transfer his soul into the body of Megumi Fushiguro, a sorcerer whose innate abilities fascinated him. By doing so, Sukuna gained even greater control and began to unleash his power upon the modern world.

Abilities and Powers

Sukuna’s reputation as the strongest sorcerer is well-earned, and his abilities far surpass those of even the most powerful modern-day jujutsu sorcerers.

  • Immense Cursed Energy: Sukuna possesses vast reserves of cursed energy, allowing him to perform devastating techniques effortlessly. His mastery over cursed energy manipulation is unparalleled, enabling precise and deadly attacks.
  • Domain Expansion – Malevolent Shrine: Sukuna’s domain, Malevolent Shrine, is one of the most advanced in existence. It creates an open domain with an extended range where anything inside is targeted with precision slashes. Unlike traditional domains, it does not require a barrier, making it even more formidable.
  • Cursed Techniques: Sukuna wields an array of powerful cursed techniques, including devastating slashing and dismantling attacks. His abilities are versatile and lethal, capable of overwhelming any opponent.
  • Physical Prowess: Even without his cursed techniques, Sukuna’s physical abilities are exceptional. His speed, strength, and combat skills make him a terrifying opponent in close combat.
  • Strategic Genius: Sukuna’s intellect and battle tactics are as formidable as his raw power. He can quickly analyze opponents’ techniques and exploit their weaknesses, often turning the tide of battle in his favor.
  • Trivia

    • Sukuna’s name, Ryomen Sukuna, is inspired by a two-faced demon from Japanese folklore.
    • Sukuna’s twenty fingers, each containing a fragment of his power, are indestructible cursed objects that serve as plot catalysts throughout the series.
    • Sukuna’s relationship with Yuji Itadori, his vessel, is both antagonistic and symbiotic, as Yuji struggles to suppress Sukuna’s influence while Sukuna manipulates him.
