Ryohei Sasagawa is a third-year student at Namimori Middle School and the older brother of Kyoko Sasagawa in the Katekyo Hitman Reborn! series. He serves as the captain of the boxing club and is known for his relentless enthusiasm and boundless energy, embodying his personal philosophy of “living life to the extreme.”
Obsessed with boxing, Ryohei is constantly on the lookout for new club members and frequently attempts to recruit Tsunayoshi Sawada, particularly after witnessing Tsuna’s strength in his Dying Will Mode. His straightforward personality and unwavering dedication make him both a formidable fighter and an endearing, if sometimes overzealous, friend. His commitment to improving his boxing skills eventually leads him to train under Master PaoPao, further honing his abilities as he embraces his role within the Vongola Famiglia.
Appearance

Appearance in Anime
Ryohei Sasagawa has tanned skin, striking gray eyes, and ashen-colored hair, which is relatively short, unkempt, and uniform in length across his head. His hair is a slightly lighter shade than his gray eyebrows, which are almost straight but slightly angled downward, contributing to his perpetually determined expression. Whether he is grinning in excitement or serious in battle, his furrowed brow enhances his extreme and passionate attitude.
Possessing an athletic build, Ryohei’s physique is a direct result of his rigorous boxing training. Despite being a year older than Tsuna and his peers, he is around the same height as Gokudera, but shorter than Yamamoto. While tall by normal standards, he is still overshadowed by some members of his friend group. A distinguishing feature is the long, thin scar above his left eyebrow, which he received during a childhood accident in primary school. Interestingly, he bears no physical resemblance to his younger sister, Kyoko, making their sibling connection less apparent at first glance.
Ryohei’s most frequently worn outfit is his Namimori Middle School uniform, consisting of a black sweater over a white formal shirt and gray pants. His shirt is typically untucked, with the sleeves and hem visible beneath the sweater, reinforcing his casual and carefree style. His casual attire outside of school includes hoodies, collared shirts worn open, track pants, and trainer-based footwear, emphasizing his athletic and active lifestyle. When running or training, he often switches to track bottoms for ease of movement.
Two of Ryohei’s most defining features are the adhesive bandage on his nose and the sports tape wrapped around his fists, symbols of his constant engagement in boxing and physical confrontations. These hallmarks remain unchanged even in the future, where his build becomes noticeably taller and more muscular. His hair grows slightly longer, styled in a messier, more upright fashion, with his partial bangs lifted to keep his face unobstructed.
In the future timeline, Ryohei’s wardrobe retains elements of his youthful style but takes on a more refined and professional appearance. He wears a black mafia-style suit over an orange collared shirt, sometimes accompanied by a black tie. Unlike his younger self, his top button is neatly fastened, and his attire is more structured, reflecting his maturity and growth as a Vongola Guardian. His casual attire consists of a raised-collar beige jacket over a green undershirt, maintaining his preference for simple yet practical clothing.
When participating in boxing competitions or activating his combat abilities, Ryohei fights shirtless, opting for pants or shorts depending on the situation. His boxing gloves vary in color, ranging from black-and-white to navy blue and metallic silver, further emphasizing his versatility in combat and his deep commitment to boxing.
Personality
Ryohei Sasagawa lives by his personal motto of doing everything “to the extreme!” (極限, Kyokugen), a philosophy he applies to every aspect of his life, including eating, sleeping, training, and fighting. His boundless enthusiasm and relentless energy make him a natural-born competitor who prefers head-on battles and thrives in fair fights. His passion for combat is so unrestrained that he once attempted to fight a bear at the zoo. When that plan failed, he simply turned his attention to battling a lion instead, demonstrating his fearless and reckless nature.
This impulsiveness extends to everyday situations, often leading him into comedic yet dangerous scenarios. A prime example is when Ryohei volunteered to teach Tsuna how to swim, despite being a horrible swimmer himself. Unaware of his own inability, he confidently belly-flopped into the water—only to sink and begin twitching at the bottom. Ironically, he works part-time as a lifeguard, highlighting his overconfidence and extreme enthusiasm even in areas where he lacks skill.
Despite his hot-blooded personality, Ryohei approaches challenges with an unwavering sense of determination. Rather than seeing his weaknesses as disadvantages, he views them as opportunities for growth and never backs down from a one-on-one fight, as per his boxing code of honor. His competitive drive is fueled by his admiration for strength, and every time he sees Tsuna and his friends involved in unusual activities, he eagerly wants to join in, even if he does not fully understand the situation. However, his recklessness often leads to injuries, though he remains unfazed, always praising his opponents and treating defeats as learning experiences rather than failures.
Ryohei’s resolve and pain tolerance are so great that even the Dying Will Bullet has no effect on him, as he is already living life at his limit. His ability to shrug off major injuries suggests that his unyielding spirit and extreme training contribute just as much to his endurance as his physical conditioning. More importantly, Ryohei never allows his sister, Kyoko, to see his injuries, as he does not want her to worry. Instead of lamenting his defeats, he focuses on ensuring others do not become distressed on his behalf, showcasing his selfless nature.
A natural storyteller, Ryohei often fabricates bizarre explanations to downplay dangerous situations, especially in front of Kyoko. For example, when Tsuna almost exposed the truth about a serious battle, Ryohei quickly covered his mouth, claiming they had simply been engaged in a harmless sumo wrestling match. No matter how outlandish his explanations become, Ryohei is fully committed to maintaining the illusion, determined to protect Kyoko and others from unnecessary worry.
Ryohei’s loyalty to his friends is one of his most defining traits. He never hesitates to protect those in need, fearlessly throwing himself into dangerous situations without a second thought. His soft spot for children and women leads him to believe that they should not participate in battles, as he sees it as his duty to protect them himself. This belief is evident when he adamantly refuses to allow Kyoko, Haru, and I-Pin to be present during the Choice Game, and when he plays a key role in keeping non-combatants unaware of the dangers in the future timeline. While his intentions are well-meaning, his decision to withhold information from those he wishes to protect sometimes creates more problems than it solves.
In the future timeline, Ryohei matures significantly after ten years of serving as a mafioso. Unlike his reckless younger self, he becomes more level-headed and is able to discuss serious matters calmly rather than demanding immediate answers. Previously known for his short memory, he overcomes this issue by writing memos to keep track of important details. His maturity and thoughtfulness are further displayed when he gives I-Pin a doll resembling her master, Fon, and a lollipop to Lambo, showing that he has become more considerate of the feelings of others.
Despite his growth and refinement, Future Ryohei retains his protective instincts, particularly toward those he perceives as vulnerable. During the Future Final Battle Arc, he volunteers to watch over Lambo, ensuring his safety in case the situation becomes too dangerous. Though he has grown more responsible, he remains true to his core values, always fighting to protect those he cares about with his unwavering “extreme” spirit.
Abilities
Ryohei Sasagawa’s primary weapons are his fists, and his mastery of boxing techniques grants him an extensive range of abilities. His incredible punching power, paired with his high-level stamina and endurance, makes him an extremely durable fighter. Years of intense training, including jogging and hand-to-hand combat drills, have refined his physical abilities, allowing him to take and deliver significant amounts of damage. His tenacity in battle, along with his unshakable resolve, enhances his combat performance, making him a fearsome close-range fighter.
Despite his high endurance and combat experience, Ryohei is often considered one of Tsuna’s weaker Guardians, though only because the other Guardians possess extraordinary abilities beyond human limits. This is evident when he is easily defeated by Dying Will Mode Tsuna during the Daily Life Arc, despite both of them being in the same enhanced state. During the Kokuyo Arc, he is severely injured after being ambushed by Ken Joshima, further showcasing his initial disadvantage against supernaturally gifted opponents. At the beginning of the Varia Arc, both Reborn and Colonnello label him as the weakest member of Tsuna’s family. However, this assessment does not imply that Ryohei is weak only that his raw power required proper refinement to reach its full potential.
Colonnello, recognizing Ryohei’s natural talent, takes him under his wing, believing that with the right training, Ryohei could even defeat the other Guardians. Since Ryohei already possesses high energy levels and immense physical strength, Colonnello first forces him to rest for two days, a necessary step to allow his body to recover from overexertion. It is revealed that Ryohei frequently overuses his muscles to the point of cellular damage, yet he possesses the awareness and discipline to recognize his own limits and respond accordingly.
One of Ryohei’s most unique traits is the extraordinary elasticity and tenderness of his cells, a rare biological condition that only one in a million people possess. To unlock his latent potential, Colonnello subjects Ryohei to a spiritually condensed bullet, an intense training method that carries the risk of death. By enduring this, Ryohei gains access to an even greater level of power, allowing him to develop his signature technique, Maximum Cannon.
Equipment
Ryohei wields a combination of powerful Sun Flame-based weaponry and specialized gear, enhancing both his offensive capabilities and healing potential. As the Sun Guardian of the Vongola Famiglia, his equipment reflects his high-energy, close-combat fighting style, focusing on enhanced physical power, rapid healing, and mobility.
Vongola Sun Ring
One of the seven Vongola Rings, Ryohei won this S-rank ring after his victory in the Sun Ring Battle. As part of the Tri-Ni-Set, the ring allows him to emit Sun Dying Will Flames, utilizing its Activation ability to accelerate the natural healing process. While the Sun Flame is traditionally associated with healing, Ryohei has demonstrated the ability to release them in massive quantities, creating powerful offensive bursts that overwhelm his enemies. The true form of the ring, granted by Vongola Primo, further enhanced its properties, though it was later broken by the Simon Famiglia.
Canguro del Sereno ver. Vongola
Ryohei’s Box Weapon, Garyu (漢我流, “My Way of Honor”) is a battle-scarred kangaroo that serves as both a combat partner and equipment supplier. When summoned, Garyu releases Sereno Gloves and Dying Will Flame Boots, increasing Ryohei’s power and mobility.
In its Vongola Box Form, Garyu undergoes an upgrade, gaining turrets on her back, her own boxing gloves, and even the ability to fly. When released from Ryohei’s Sun Bangle, Canguro del Sereno ver. X transforms further, covering her entire body in armor while no longer needing turrets to initiate Cambio Forma.
Dying Will Flame Boots
A unique mobility-enhancing device, these boots allow Ryohei to fly by blasting Sun Flames from the soles, effectively propelling him at high speeds. Ryohei is the only member of the Vongola Famiglia to use this type of flight-based technology, giving him an edge in maneuverability and aerial combat.
Motorcycle
A specialized vehicle used by Ryohei to travel long distances undetected. Unlike most Vongola-powered machinery, this motorcycle does not rely on Dying Will Flames, allowing him to bypass Flame sensors and enemy detection systems.
Saldatore del Sereno
A scalpel-like healing tool capable of gradually regenerating wounds over time, making it an essential asset in sustaining his allies during extended battles.
Knuckle’s Maximum Break
In Cambio Forma, Garyu merges with Ryohei, transforming into the weapon of Knuckle, the First Generation Sun Guardian. This form consists of a pair of boxing gloves and headgear, granting Ryohei increased attack power and defensive durability.
In Version X, this transformation expands to include:
This fully-armored state increases his endurance, strength, and control over Sun Flames, making him a devastating force in hand-to-hand combat.
Bangle of the Sun Version X
An upgraded version of the Vongola Sun Ring, this bangle combines with Garyu’s Box Ring, further amplifying Ryohei’s Sun Flames and activation abilities.
Motorcycle
A high-speed vehicle used for long-distance travel during Choice. It is powered by Dying Will Flames and coated in Mammon Chains, preventing it from being detected by Flame sensors.
Legacy
Ryohei Sasagawa’s energy, dedication, and sheer force of will make him one of the most valuable and enduring members of the Vongola Famiglia. His growth from an enthusiastic boxer to an elite Mafia warrior highlights his incredible determination and loyalty to Tsuna and his friends. Whether as a fearsome combatant, a protective older brother, or a source of comic relief, Ryohei’s extreme passion and unbreakable spirit leave a lasting impact on both his allies and fans of the series.
